M: Hi, Jane. You mentioned that we might need some new equipment for the office.
W: Absolutely. What we've got is too old and much of it is faulty.
M: I'll just get a request form and write down what we need.

W: Who's your advisor?
M: Susan Dey. She's been great.Aside from the fact that she's a good professor, she's been helping me out a lot with my research. She just thinks the research has practical value. That gives me confidence.

W: I've just come from the exhibition on the school playground. You could really tell how much the children enjoyed designing the robots.
M: You bet! It's a great event to develop kids' creativity.
W: The kids built all the robots themselves. It's amazing how smoothly the robots performed specific tasks.

W: Mr. Johnson, I'm afraid you need to check in your bag. It's too big.
M: Are you sure? It's a standard carry-on size.
W: On most planes it would be, but the plane to Memphis is only a 70-seater and has limited space.

M: OK, Rebecca. Now that I have a good idea of your work and academic background, what would you like to tell me about yourself as a person?
W: Well, Mr. Parsons, I'm really focused and hard-working. I think my academic results prove this.
M: Yes, that's true, but how about your other personal qualities?
W: Well, I believe I'm a good team player, but I can also work well independently.
M: What would you say is your best quality?
W: That's a tough question. But I would say that I'm really passionate about journalism and my career.

M: Hi, I'm planning a group visit, and I was wondering if you could help me decide which hotel to book.I have narrowed it down to either the Winchester Hotel, the Royal Hotel, or the Star Hotel.
W: I would be happy to help! If you want to book online, the Star Hotel offers online booking at no extra charge and has sea-view rooms available.
M: I will consider that. And we will be on a tight schedule, so we won't have much time to go out for meals. Which hotels serve food?
W: The Star Hotel and the Winchester Hotel only offer a basic breakfast. For a full restaurant and room service, the Royal Hotel is your best bet.
M: Oh, wonderful!

M: Kelly, there is a social event for all of the new international students this Friday night. Is there any chance you could help out?
W: Sure, James. What do you want me to do?
M: You really just need to be here to talk to the students and give helpful suggestions about the programme. You know, things like the classes we offer, student housing, and social activities.
W: I don't mean to be rude, but I feel uneasy about that. I really don't know very much about the programme yet, since I just started last week.
M: Yes, I understand. But you could talk to Hwan before the event. He has been working here for several years and was once an international student in the programme himself. He can tell you what questions students are likely to ask. Would that make you feel more comfortable?
W: Definitely.Thank you.

W: With us today is master chocolate maker, Edward Yardley. How did you become so fascinated by chocolate, Edward?
M: Well, like every child, I loved chocolate. I started keeping the different papers the chocolate was wrapped in, and soon had several albums.
W: Really? So how did that lead to something more serious?
M:A local museum was planning to have an exhibition of unusual hobbies and my mum told them about my collection. They wanted to display it. I was very proud and realized that chocolate must be something very special.Later, my wrappers even appeared on a local TV program.
W: Wow, that's amazing. Did you study chocolate-making at university?
M: No, I actually studied art and design. I don't think I was a talented artist, but I wanted to create things with my hands.
W: And has that artistic background influenced your chocolate-making in any way?
M: I haven't used the artistic skills directly. However, I can see the style I developed at university in many chocolates I create today.

M: Today I'm going to talk about a tree called the St Helena gumwood, which is one of the ten rarest trees on the planet. It is found only in specific areas of St Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The St Helena gumwood has a very interesting appearance. Its trunk bends and its branches form umbrella-like shapes. It has many leaves which grow in bunches in the shape of hands. It takes each tree around 30 years to reach its full height of about eight metres.
The tree hasn't always been so rare.Problems began when a trading company first settled there. The island's new comers used the trees for fuel, but the goats they brought with them caused even greater damage. They fed on the young trees, stopping them from being able to develop fully. Fortunately, some trees survived. Although other plants were starting to take over the trees' habitat, some trees were growing out of the cracks of rock walls. These were the only trees that were not affected and so the gumwood didn't disappear from the island completely.
