Unit 6B

Text 1

W: The Internet speed in the office has been really bad. I spent a lot of time and eventually downloaded the file.

M: Maybe we should look for a person to see where the problem lies.

Text 2

W: What do you think of the movie we saw last night?

M: I have read the novel about it. Well, to be honest, I don't think I will see the movie twice.

Text 3

M: Can you please tell me how to get on the freeway from here? I think I took a wrong turn back there, and now I'm lost.

W: Sure, just take a left and you will see signs telling you which way to go.

Text 4

W: Have you heard of FlyZoo Hotel in Hangzhou?

M: Yes. It is Alibaba's first “future hotel”. No people work there but robots. I expect to stay there one day.

Text 5

W: Shall we go for lunch now?

M: Yes, but I don't want to eat another sandwich.

W: Me neither. I feel like eating noodles.

M: OK, I was thinking of pizza though.

Text 6

M: Hello?

W: Hi, Ken. It's Erica. I got your message, and I thought I should give you a call and tell you some information about the Cates Park.

M: Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. So what's the fastest way to get there?

W: Well, Route 12 is really pretty. It goes through the forest. But the fastest way is to take Route 5.

M: I will choose the fastest way. So would you like to go with us on the 17th?

W: Sorry, I'd really like to, but I have plans for that day.

M: OK.

Text 7

W: Have you got any other questions?

M: Yes. The speech should be for 20 minutes — is that right?

W: Yes, but 20 minutes in total, including 5 minutes for Questions & Answers. So you'll talk for only 15 minutes.

M: I won't be able to say much at all in that short time.

W: So, you must make sure your speech only includes the most important information. For instance, you won't have time to give examples, but you could give some images that show examples, without spending time talking about them.

M: That's a good idea.

Text 8

M: Janice, did you see the sports magazine I had put beside the TV set?

W: Nope.

M: That's strange. Where is it then? What are you doing on the Internet anyway?

W: Oh, I'm reading these articles about the island of Bali. It's so beautiful. I suppose I should lie down on the beach, drinking the refreshing coconut water right now. I just can't stop imagining that happy moment!

M: Well, if only you hadn't spent so much on those bags.

W: Yeah, I've regretted it already.

M: Seriously, we should really make every penny count. Billy is going to school next year, and it'll cost us an arm and a leg. Actually I'm thinking of investing some money in stocks. And I'll try my best to get a promotion this year.

W: You're right. I'm also looking for some part-time jobs that will make our financial situation better.

Text 9

M: Good evening, Ms Thompson. Welcome to the show!

W: Thanks.

M: So when did you open Hugs Café?

W: It was years ago, in the year 2012.

M: So why did you want to open such a restaurant?

W: Well, when getting ready to retire from my work, I had a dream to open a restaurant that hired adults with special needs to do every job there. I had been teaching cooking classes to adults with special needs for nearly ten years. I knew they needed work and they could do the work well. I want to improve the lives of them through training and employment at Hugs Café.

M: That's very kind of you. So how many people work at the restaurant now?

W: 23 employees. They are called teammates and they are very dedicated.

M: Ms Thompson, I think what you've done is great. So at the end of the show, what do you want to say to people with special needs?

W: Trust yourself. You can also live a very good life.

M: Thanks, Ms Thompson. And thanks for coming to the show.

W: The honor is all mine!

Text 10

W: Good morning, everyone! Here is the entertainment guide for this week. There is another exhibition of posters at the Town Hall. Last year it was early holiday posters, but this time the exhibition will be about railway posters. The exhibition opens on Monday. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm every day. If you can spend some time there, I'm sure you will enjoy yourself.

At the Arts Center on Saturday, it's the very first performance of a new play, The Rose Garden, by Alan Brown. This is Alan's first stage play, but many of you have enjoyed his films on TV. Be sure to book your seats as soon as possible, if you have not done so yet.

There is also a film, The Shadow, being shown this Sunday at the Arts Center cinema. Book the tickets in advance just in case you can't get a ticket the very day you come to see the film. The place to go to make reservations is the Tourist Center. It is open from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm every day except Monday. Also, you can book tickets online.
