M: I saw a sign "Apartment to Let". Is it still available?

W: Yes. How big is your family?

M: My wife and I and our son.

W: Well, it’s big enough for your family. The apartment has two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen.

M: Is it furnished?

W: No, you have to buy your own furniture.

M: How much is the rent?

W: Six hundred dollars a month.

Text 7

W: Wow, this one is so cute!

M: Um, he is really pretty, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call him cute. That word is usually used for dogs, cats... you know, normal pets.

W: But look how friendly he is! He just came right up and put his head out so I could pet him. And these feathers are so soft!

M: Taking care of a bird is not like taking care of fish, you know that?

W:Yes, absolutely.

M: You’d have to clean his cage all the time, and buy him special food... not to mention the fact that keeping a bird in a cage is cruel to some degree, in my opinion.

W: But we could build him a special cage in the backyard where he would have more room to fly around. I really like him, Paul!

听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 8

W: My partners at work say I should get a health insurance. What do you think?

M: I think it’s important. I can give you my insurance agent’s card if you want.

W: But I’m not sure what kind I need. In Germany, we have a national insurance program. But here you have nothing.

M: Yes, I know. Many countries have national health insurance. America doesn’t.

W: Why is that?

M: Well, it’s because of American culture. Americans think private companies can do things better than the government. So we depend on private companies for insurance.

W: But isn’t that expensive?

M: You’re right. It is expensive. And many people think it is not fair to poor people. They think the health insurance system is better in other countries, especially countries in Europe.

W: But what do you think?

M: I have no idea. I just do my best to have good insurance. It’s important.

听下面一段对话,回答第13至第16四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。

Text 9

W: Hi, Mr. White. Can I speak to you for a few minutes?

M: Sure.

W: Well, the entrance exams are coming up. I have some questions about what to study in the future.

M: OK. What are you interested in?

W: I’m interested in literature, especially world literature.

M: World literature is meaningful, being a way of communicating and preserving important details of culture, traditions and attitudes.

W: Yeah. But my parents want me to study physics. They said physics is more useful than literature. What’s more, it would be easier for me to find a job after graduation.

M: It’s too early to think about finding a job now. And physics and literature are both useful, even though they’re quite different.

W: I totally agree with you.

M: Indeed there are many outstanding scientists, and there are also many great writers. All of them have made great contributions.

W: Yes. If only my parents could see things this way!

M: Communicate with your parents about what you think and like. I’m sure they’ll respect your choice finally.

W: OK, I will. Thank you very much, Mr. White.

听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。

Text 10

Have you ever considered what and how we eat as a form of communication? In many cultures, people sit together and share food at mealtimes, which is a common tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also play an important role in a family or culture’s celebrations. The foods we eat — and when and how we eat them — are often unique to a particular culture.

In most cultures, bread represents delicious food. It is also one of the most commonly shared foods in the world. Sharing bread is a common symbol of companionship and togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with decorated cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

There are foods like bread in other cultures. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is baked into the cake, which stands for good luck in the new year for the person who receives it. Most of the foods eaten during the Chinese New Year have significance. Sometimes this is based on their shape; for example, long noodles symbolize long life. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and mooncakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to symbolize family unity.
