M: Do you know when my train will arrive? It is already 8:00 pm.

W: I’m sorry, but your train is behind schedule. It’ll arrive in an hour.

Text 2

M: Have you noticed that big black cloud? I forgot my umbrella today.

W: Oh, terrible. I forgot mine too. We’d better hurry up and look for a place to protect ourselves from the coming rain.

Text 3

W: Now remember that we’d like the master bedroom to face the garden and the swimming pool.

M: OK. I’ve had everything written down. I’ll have your plan ready in two weeks, and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the design.

Text 4

W: We have a lot to do before we go camping. I talked to Kent and he said he would bring the tent.

M: OK. Let’s prepare some sandwiches. Should we make some orange juice and some potato salad as well?

W: Good idea. We just have some potatoes at home.

Text 5

W: Michael, do you have any restaurant to recommend?

M: You can try the Huge Hamburger. But it’s not open on Mondays. If you like Chinese food, the Happy Dragon has excellent food, or I’d recommend the Sun Pizzeria if you prefer Italian food. Both are open every day.

W: Thanks a lot.

第一节到此结束。

W: I’d like to make a doctor’s appointment. I’m having skin problems.

M: Would Tuesday or Wednesday be OK for you?

W: I would like to come on Wednesday. I have a tight schedule on other weekdays.

M: Then there are doctors available that day at 4:00.

W: Will Dr. Green work then? I would like to see him. He knows my medical history.

M: Sorry, but he will be in the clinic on Friday. You can choose either Dr. Smith or Dr. Jones.

W: Then Dr. Jones, please.

听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 7

W: I know it’s somewhat late for a reservation, but my two friends and I would like to travel to Greece in July.

M: Where would you like to stay?

W: My parents recommended Mykonos to us. And we cannot spend more than $100 a day. Would that be possible?

M: Quite difficult in July. For that price you won’t have many choices. If you could arrange to make it in June, we might have a bedsitting room for $75. It provides three single beds, and it’s 5 minutes’ walk from the main beach.

W: Well, I need to discuss it with my friends.

M: OK, come to an agreement and we’ll prepare a travel schedule for you. We only have a month left, so you need to make up your mind today or tomorrow.

听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 8

W: Mike, Professor Wang asked us all undergraduates to read a novel set in the American Civil War this term. So which book have you decided to read?

M: I’ve decided to read Little Women. I first learned about it when I entered high school. But I didn’t show an interest back then. Now I decide to finish it. What about you?

W: I haven’t decided between Gone with the Wind and The Red Badge of Courage.

M: The latter is a war novel by Stephen Crane, right?

W: Yes. It’s a story about a young soldier of the Union Army, Henry Fleming. I heard it’s well written but it’s a bit difficult.

M: Well, if I were you, I’d read this one. The other one is just too long. We should finish the book in a week, you know.

W: I guess you’re right.

听下面一段对话,回答第14至第17四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。

Text 9

M: Uh, excuse me, you advertised for casual staff, right?

W: Yes, we advertised for an assistant cook, a kitchen hand and a cleaner. But the assistant’s and the cleaner’s positions have been filled already.

M: Not to worry. The kitchen hand job is fine for me. How many shifts would I have to work every week?

W: Our casual staff are generally asked to work on Sundays, but you’ll also have to work on Friday — that’s our biggest day of the week.

M: What about the pay?

W: The usual rate is $15 an hour. Well, for college students like you, we pay $3 more than that.

M: Thanks. When can I start?

W: You’ll have to formally talk to the manager before starting.

M: What should I pay attention to when meeting with the manager?

W: Bear in mind that he’ll want to know all about your work history, so you’ll need to email your application form first. We’d also like to see a reference, so bring that with you.

M: What else?

W: Oh, one more thing. He’ll want to know if you’re permitted to work in this country, so your passport is necessary.

M: I see. Thank you.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

Text 10

When Oprah Winfrey was a kid, she moved around a lot. When she was in high school, she got a job reading news for a local radio station. Though she made mistakes at first, she believed in herself. And she tried her best to improve herself. She went on to become one of the world’s most famous talk show hosts. Winfrey’s story has been an inspiration for many people. And it’s included in the latest season of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: The Podcast. In the programme, known women read stories from the popular book series. They read the stories of extraordinary women. This season includes parts about a well-known entertainer and a famous gymnast and others. Winfrey’s story is read by her best friend, Gayle King. King is a broadcast journalist who has known Winfrey for many years. King hopes kids are inspired by the true stories. Indeed Winfrey’s story shows girls how much they can accomplish if they believe in themselves.
