W: Look at the clouds. It is going to rain.

M: Hopefully, it will be fine tomorrow for our picnic.

M: Laura, are you going to Sophia's end-of-school party?

W: Oh, no! I forgot all about it, Matt.

M: It will be a lot of fun. You should really come!

M: Isn't this your usual stop?

W: Yes, but today I'm going to the city library.

M: Oh, then you should get off at the next stop and walk to Clifton Street.

M: I can't hear a thing over the music. We can't even talk. Let's go somewhere else for dinner.

W: But Dennis, the food will be here any minute. Why don't we just ask the waiter to turn down the music?

M: Your skirt is quite beautiful in color, isn't it?

W: Yes. I bought it at a sale for half price. It cost me $12.

M: It looks nice on you.

W: Thank you.

W: I wonder why The Sunflower went out of business. It got a great review in Dining Magazine and every time I ate there, there was a big crowd.

M: It's not closed forever. There was a fire in the kitchen last month, but they plan to reopen as soon as the damage is repaired.

W: I'm glad to hear that. It was one of the best spots in town. It was so clean. The workers were so friendly and the food was great!

W: Mark, can I have a word with you? I'm very impatient with Becky.

M: Why is that? I've always found her very easy to get on with.

W: Well, that's not the problem. She's a lovely person but whenever I ask her for something, she never seems to know where it is; it takes ages to find what I need. Now she seems to have lost a really important file that I gave her last week.

M: OK. I'll have a quiet word with her — I know she's been a bit overworked recently.

W: I appreciate it, Mark.

M: No problem.

M: What is this book about? I recognize some of the words, but I've never seen most of them before.

W: That's not mine. It is my sister's. She is taking a French class.

M: I didn't know the two languages are so similar.

W: Oh, yes. English borrows a lot of words from French, Spanish, and even German.

M: Really? Can you give me some examples?

W: Restaurant, menu, chef, salad..., those are all French words. They are pronounced differently in French, though.

M: I never knew that. What else?

W: Let me think...well, mosquito and cockroach are Spanish words, as are many city names in America.

M: So English is really just a mix of a bunch of other languages?

W: I guess you could say that.

M: Language learning is such an interesting thing! Can you teach me some words after school every day?

W: Okay.

W: Well, Bob White, what a surprise! It's nice to see you again!

M: Hello, Lily. My gosh! How long has it been? Wasn't it a year ago that we saw you last?

W: I think you are right. How are your kids and wife?

M: Oh, they are fine. Billy fell off his bike and broke his leg a few weeks ago. But other than that, there's been nothing special.

W: Wasn't Joe learning to play the violin? I remember something like that.

M: Oh, he's given up. He's all excited about volleyball now.

W: And Mrs. White, what's she doing these days?

M: She's going to night school on Mondays and Thursdays. She's studying French now, but last year she studied typing and sewing. I think she just enjoys going to school. Next it will probably be a course about making delicious food.

W: How nice for her. Oh, I'm sorry. I've got to go now. Please say hello to Mrs. White for me, will you?

M: Sure I will, and remember me to your husband. Bye.

Fellow scientists, I finally have some good news to report. As you know, I have been studying sea life for three months in New York Harbor. Today, I can finally present some hard evidence that sharks have returned to these waters. For the past two weeks, I've been helping to film the Shark Week program for the Discovery Channel on TV. My job was to sit in a boat near a dead whale and check it for shark bites. It's been a very hot July, so this wasn't an easy task. After five days, I noticed there were several large shark bites along the stomach of the whale. I was thrilled, because this means our conservation efforts are starting to pay off. Sharks' returning to a former hunting ground indicates that the waters are cleaner and healthier. We have been trying to clean up this area and the rivers that poured into the harbor for many years. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of the Environment Society. You have all made your best effort so that future generations can live in a clean world.
