M: Can you come to my birthday party tomorrow evening, Aunt Amy?

W: I'd like to, but I'm afraid I can't. I will still be at work at 8:00 p.m. I will be operating on a patient then.

M: Do you want to run one more lap?

W: Yes, I do. But shall we stop and drink some water first?

W: How long may I keep these?

M: Two weeks. If you cannot return them on time, you will be fined.

W: I think I'd better read them fast.

M: This motorcycle cost me $1,000! I think it's too expensive.

W: I don't think so. In fact, you got it at a rather fair price. Motorcycles of the same type are more expensive in the other shops. Jimmy got the same one at $1,200 last month, you know.

M: Jenny! I wasn't expecting you at this time. I thought you weren't getting to the party until after 7:00.

W: Yeah, I don't have to work overtime tonight. My boss actually let me off earlier. Who could have guessed?

M: I need to improve my Spanish quickly. Any suggestions?

W: There are conversation classes at the community center. Anyone can join.

M: Perfect! What day?

W: Saturday mornings at 9:00.

M: That's terrible. I can't get up that early.

W: Well, if you need to practice before your trip to Spain, you should try hard to make it.

M: I usually stay up late with my friends on Fridays.

W: You can sacrifice some fun if this trip is important to you.

M: You're right. If I don't remember much Spanish, I will have a hard time meeting new people and going to places.

M: So, Shirley, I told you about my favorite restaurant. What is yours?

W: Well, my favorite restaurant is a kind of salad and soup restaurant, which is near my office.

M: That is very convenient for you.

W: Yes. The food is very good there. And I also like it because the room is nice, and the restaurant has a beautiful garden.

M: Wow, with a great view of a garden! It seems like it might be expensive.

W: Yeah, it does seem like that, but it's not. The garden has lots of colorful flowers and they even grow herbs in it. So the herbs that they use in the salad are all fresh from the garden. It's quite delicious.

M: That sounds good!

W: Yeah, it's great. And they make a fantastic soup. I highly recommend that you go there with me some time.

M: I'll try it.

W: What's the best time to read the newspaper every day?

M: In the morning, right when you start a new day.

W: What types of magazines do you usually read?

M: I usually read about politics, fashion, culture, and tourism.

W: What's your favorite magazine?

M: My favorite is The New York Times Magazine, which has articles about all sorts of things: business, sports, movies, travel, books, jobs, education...I never miss the sports articles.

W: Which do you read more often, the newspaper or online news?

M: I prefer reading online news to save money.

W: How much do you spend on newspapers every month?

M: I only buy a monthly newspaper, which doesn't cost much money — around $5 per month.

W: What is the most popular magazine in your country?

M: I think it would have to be the Forbes magazine, a leading source for reliable business news and financial information. But my wife likes to read Reader's Digest.

W: With the popularity of the Internet, do you think newspapers and magazines will disappear?

M: Yes, unfortunately, it's just a matter of time.

W: Hi, George? My name is Dianne. I'm here to show you around.

M: Thank you. I appreciate it. The first few days can be a little stressful.

W: I completely understand. We all have been in your position. Where have you been told to go today?

M: I think it was the science lab, on the first floor. Apparently I won't be staying there, though.

W: That's correct. Just for homeroom, from 8:50 to 9:00.

M: What is homeroom?

W: It's where students gather in the morning to check in before class.  It also gives them a short rest period before their first class.

M: That's a good idea. That way, we don't have to waste class time calling out names. Please continue.

W: Students won't have to put away their backpacks until 9:10 and then enter their first class of the day. The same goes for us.

M: What do you teach?

W: Social studies, on the second floor. In fact, my classroom is right under your math classroom. If you have any questions, feel free to come down and see me. Welcome to the school, and good luck on your first day!
