W: Shall we meet outside the cinema this evening?

M: It would be better for me if we meet at the subway station.

Text 2

W: Amazing! You have a really big collection of stamps and postcards.

M: Yeah. I collect photographs, too. The photograph of the lake you sent me last week was great.

Text 3

M: Can I invite you for tea this afternoon?

W: Sorry. But I have to get to the library before it closes at five thirty. And before that I have to go to the doctor.

Text 4

W: Hi, Edward! It's about tonight's dinner. I couldn't get a table at our regular restaurant, but I managed to find one at a Chinese restaurant for seven o'clock. I hope you don't mind.

M: That's OK. See you later.

Text 5

W: I need to cash some traveler's checks. Where can I get them done?

M: Just go down to the hotel reception desk. Of course you can go to the post office downtown or try the bank down the street.

Text 6

M: Oh dear. I told you to watch out for Kitty.

W: But I was working on my report all morning. And you can't tie up a cat!

M: That's my fault, but I don't think Tom will be happy when he knows that two of his favorite toys have broken down.

W: I know. He'll probably get mad. We'd better get them fixed right now.

Text 7

M: Mom! Do you know where the Hill Peak is? How can I get there?

W: The far side of the town. Why will you go there?

M: I will attend a goodbye party on Friday evening in Jack's house and then we will have a trip to the Hill Peak next morning.

W: How about taking the subway?

M: No, Jack said the subway doesn't go there. There is a bus station. But I will have to waste much time on the way.

W: Why don't you drive your new car?

M: Oh, Mom, I am a new driver and I don't know the route.

W: Come on, darling. You've got your driver's license last month. You just need to be careful.

M: OK. I guess I can.

W: Now let's check the map and figure out the route.

Text 8

M: Do you know anything about "showrooming", Linda?

W: Yeah. Customers visit shops to see and test products before buying them online.

M: Right. You see, technology is changing the way we shop and it could be very bad for the high street shops.

W: The high street shops? You mean those everyday shops that we normally see in our town centers? Things like shoe shops, supermarkets...

M: Yes, the high street is competing with the Internet. Nowadays I always buy CDs, electronic equipment and food online.

W: Well, I think the high shops need to adapt to or make changes. They could try to offer something like discounts or a free gift maybe.

M: I agree.

Text 9

M: Good morning, Ms Brown. Take a seat, please.

W: Thank you, Mr Jackson.

M: Well, Ms Brown, could you please tell me about yourself?

W: Yes, of course. I'm 20 years old and just graduated from Peterson Secretary School. I read your advertisement on your website and know that you are looking for a secretary.

M: Could you tell me what you can do?

W: I can do whatever a secretary is expected to do, such as receiving phone calls, sending emails, and writing reports. I'm good at computer and have a good command of office software.

M: Well, it seems that your qualifications for the job are excellent. Could you tell me what kind of salary you are expecting?

W: I saw in the advertisement that this position offers a salary of around $1,000 a month. That would be fine with me.

M: OK. Is there anything you would like to know about the job?

W: No, not so far.

M: Good. Thank you for coming, Ms Brown. I've enjoyed meeting and talking with you. We'll call you to inform the result as soon as possible.

W: Thank you. I appreciate the time you've given me.

Thank you for coming along to the school to hear about the language courses. Like last year, you'll be able to learn English and Japanese. But this year we've also arranged for there to be courses in Spanish and Russian. You can join a class at whatever level is best for you. When you're wondering if a class would be suitable for you, ring the school secretary and ask to have a word with Miss Thompson. That's T-H-O-M-P-S-O-N. We also have a Miss Thomson without "p" on the staff, but she deals with chemistry. Some classes are held on weekday evenings, and some on Sunday afternoons. The former are 2 hours long, and the weekend ones are 2.5 hours. The courses will be held in the physics building. You'll find it behind the arts studio you see if you turn left and left again, as you leave the lecture theatre. If you decide to take one of these courses, you will be allowed to use our school library, which is next to the arts studio.
