Text 1

W: That film was exciting. The actor who played the bad guy was so convincing.

M: All the actors were. I thought the scenery could have been better though.

W: I agree, and I don't think the clothes were right for the time it was set in.

Text 2

W: My sister's birthday is coming. I haven't got any idea what to get her. Her cupboards are full of clothes and shoes. I don't think she needs any more.

M: She reads a lot, doesn't she? What about an e-book reader?

Text 3

M: Don't you think it's sweet that babies smile back at you?

W: Absolutely! My baby smiles every time I make a funny face.

M: It feels rewarding to see them respond with such happiness.

Text 4

W: It's raining again. I was hoping to go for a walk today.

M: I know, Lucy. Whenever the weather is like this, I just read a good book inside.

W: I feel like doing something active, right? My house is a mess. I know what I should do.

Text 5

M: I keep meaning to visit Mom and Dad more, but work's so busy.

W: Same here. They always say they are fine, but I guess they get lonely.

M: I know. Their neighbors have been helping, but we should do more.

Text 6

M: I read about a lost city that was discovered deep in the jungle.

W: Amazing! How was it found?

M: Scientists scanned the ground from above.

W: So it was completely hidden before?

M: Yes, its ruins had been hidden by the plant life for years.

W: I can hardly believe that. I wonder what they found there.

M: Ancient buildings, tools and even stone works. It's unbelievable that people once lived in a place no one knew about.

W: Yes, while these finds tell us a lot about the people who lived there, no one is sure why the city was abandoned.

M: Exactly.

Text 7

M: Hi, I need some information about traveling to Spain. Do I need a visa?

W: It depends. If you are staying for less than 90 days, you should be fine.

M: Oh, yes, it's just a holiday, so that's good. What about travel insurance?

W: Hmm, medical care can be expensive in Spain for visitors. It isn't free like in England.

M: I see. I'll follow your advice. And do I need to get currency before I go? Sorry for so many questions.

W: Most places accept card payments, but you'll get a better exchange rate in Spain.

M: That's useful to know. One last thing, how early should I arrive at the airport?

W: For international flights, at least two hours before takeoff. Oh, have you booked a hotel?

M: Yes, it's expensive but lovely. Thanks for your help.

W: You're welcome. Have a great trip!

Text 8

M: Apples at the market were half the price of those in the supermarket.

W: Really? I always thought supermarkets were the cheapest.

M: Not always. The market had apples for $1.50 per kilo, plus the shop owner allowed me to try one first.

W: That sounds nice. I don't think supermarkets ever do that.

M: Exactly, it feels more personal and friendly when I visit the market.

W: Maybe I should go there next time. What else did you see?

M: There were lots of different fruits and vegetables. Some shops even sold fresh bread and cheese.

W: That sounds lovely. Is it always open?

M: Only on Saturdays, but it's definitely worth visiting.

W: I think I will. I wonder how much I'd save if I bought my fruit there instead of the supermarket.

Text 9

M: I've been thinking about getting a pet. Can you give me some advice?

W: Sure, do you have any ideas?

M: I like dogs. They are man's best friend.

W: But you have to walk them every day. Have you thought about a cat?

M: They're cute, but I don't want to clean a cat litter pan.

W: What about a rabbit? They won't cost much.

M: Maybe, but don't they need a big space?

W: Not really, you just need a cage or a small area for them.

M: I see. What else? I simply want a pet that suits my routine.

W: Are you busy at work?

M: Yes, so I wouldn't want a pet that moves around a lot and needs too much care.

W: In that case, a fish might be a good choice.

M: A fish could be nice, but I need to think more before deciding.

W: OK. I wish I could have a pet too, but my mom doesn't like them, so she sets a rule.

W: Dear students and teachers, attention please. This is from the headteacher's office. I would like to inform you that the school playground will be closed from Monday, 4th March, until Friday, 15th March. During this time, workers will be resurfacing the playground to make it smoother and safer for everyone. The new surface will have many benefits. It will be softer, reducing the risk of injuries if you fall. Also, after it rains, water will not collect in one place, but flow away quickly. In addition, the fresh surface will make it easier to run and play. While the work is being done, students will not be able to use the playground. Instead, you can use the sports field during breaks. Please follow the rules to keep the area safe and enjoyable for all. Teachers on duty will be there to make sure everything runs smoothly. We understand that some of you may miss using the playground, but we believe the improvements will be worth the wait. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions, please ask your teacher. Full details and a description of the work will be posted on each classroom noticeboard.
