M: No. She just texted me and said that she was in the parking lot near the cafe. We'll get to the cafe in a few minutes.

W: OK. Can you tell me more about your friend?

M: Of course. She was born in the countryside and grew up in a suburb of Bristol. She began her schooling at a local school there and then moved to a large and modern school in the city center.

W: Did she go to university in Bristol?

M: Yes. She went to the University of Bristol at 18. She joined a university folk group and started singing.

W: So, she majored in music?

M: No. Her father wanted her to study economics. But she was drawn to history. So, she chose her major according to her passion.

W: So cool.

M: Hello, Joan. I'm not in the Technology Department. Right now, I'm on a business trip. What's the matter?

W: Oh, I need to print some reports for a meeting. But the printer in my office doesn't work. My computer keeps searching for printers all the time.

M: Is the Wi-Fi working in your office?

W: Let me check. Well, I can see the Wi-Fi on my computer, and the signal is quite strong.

M: Well, you should try to restart the printer and reconnect it to the Wi-Fi. It must have been running for too long.

W: OK, but how?

M: I'll send you a file of instructions provided by the printer producer. You just need to follow it. If you still can't make it, turn to Luke. He is in the office today.

W: What do you think is the one big thing that helps to make a child a reader?

M: Well, there're a lot of talks about how children learn to read and what strategy might be best. But actually, what makes a reader is a book. It's finding the book that you really want to read, and that's the moment when children discover the joy of reading.

W: Teenagers can also be quite negative about reading.

M: Yeah, but I think there're lots of ways to get into reading and one of the things that's very evident is that, um, films — far from putting children off reading the book — often guide children toward the original works.

W: Then has all the new media made young people read less?

M: When television first hit, everyone said children would stop reading, and the curious thing is that children's books are stronger now, much stronger than they were when children's television first took hold. Children's television has slightly declined, while books have increased. I always think the thing that really threatens reading is listening to music. I know you can do both, but most people can't.

W: Hi, I'm Charlotte Liebling. I once volunteered at a store that sold second-hand goods. I witnessed how beloved stuffed toys were given away with love, only to be sold for pennies or thrown away. It broke my heart, so I started Loved Before, the first eco-friendly sustainable soft toy adoption agency. Here is how it works: When someone donates a toy by mail, they also share its story, including its name, likes and dislikes, or an adventure it's had. My team and I clean each one, photograph it, and package it with its unique history. We believe that sharing what makes the toy unique helps potential new owners understand its value. Every Monday, we post new toys for “adoption” on our website. And we make a charitable donation of at least half of the profit from the sale of each toy. Since 2019, we've rehomed over 50,000 toys. But this isn't just about saving stuffed toys from landfills. It's about something bigger: teaching kids and adults that “second-hand” doesn't mean “less-than”. If we can change how people see a well-loved stuffed toy, maybe we can change how they see everything pre-owned — and that's a future worth working for.
