W: I'm sorry to hear that, Alex. Do take care of yourself.
M: Thank you. And should I preview the new materials at home?
W: No. For the next week, I will check the projects you've completed and ask the whole class to give a talk on them. You can use this time to organize your thoughts and materials for that.
M: Got it.
W: And when you return, come to my office to hand in your sick note.

M: How was your trip to Spain, Lucy?
W: It was wonderful, Mark!Their music was energetic and the local cuisine really impressed me. But there was one thing I had to adjust to: People often have lunch around 3 pm and dinner very late, at 9 or 10 pm!
M: That's quite a change! What else stood out?
W: The Spanish people! Neighbors greet each other, passengers say hello to the bus driver, and even strangers in an elevator will exchange greetings.
M: Sounds very welcoming. How about their daily rhythm?
W: They truly enjoy life. I noticed people in cafes just sitting for hours, talking, not in a rush — it reminded me of the relaxed teahouse culture in Sichuan, China.
M: It really sounds like a culture of connection. I'd love to visit too!

M: What was your first job, Sarah?
W: I worked as an assistant at my father's radio station.
M: That's amazing. What did you enjoy most about it?
W: I didn't have to talk much, which felt comfortable. I just operated the panel and made sure every part started and ended exactly on time. It was mostly technical. What's been the most special job you've ever had, Adam?
M: I worked at an amusement park wearing giant animal costumes to welcome visitors and entertain kids when I was in college.
W: That's quite an experience! Did you face any challenges then?
M: The suit was incredibly hot in the summer sun, and seeing the world through a tiny opening felt different. Though the pay wasn't high at that time, making a shy kid laugh or seeing their face light up made the experience satisfying.

W: Hello, everyone. The topic of this talk is the Panama Canal. Its construction began in 1881 under the leadership of a French company. During the construction, the company was faced with heavy rains and tropical diseases. They didn't complete the canal because the company went broke in the end. The project was carried on by another French company and then by the United States and the canal finally opened in 1914.
The canal dramatically shortens global shipping routes. For example, ships sailing between the east and west coasts of the United States shorten their voyage by about 15,000 kilometers. Of course, even a global gateway like the Panama Canal has its difficulties. The canal depends on freshwater from nearby lakes to operate its locks. In times when there is little or no rain, water levels drop. That is becoming more frequent now, which can limit how deep ships can sit in the water.
Today, over 10,000 ships pass through the Panama Canal each year, which facilitates trade worldwide. Therefore, the government of Panama added a new set of larger locks and widened it to increase the Panama Canal's capacity in 2016.
Let's now discuss what makes the Panama Canal special...
