第5单元 B卷

Text 1

M: Aren't you supposed to have a science test this afternoon?

W: It was put off till next week because the teacher had to attend a meeting.

Text 2

W: Hi, I just started working last week. However, my key card doesn't always work, so I need to ask someone else to open the door for me.

M: Okay, I can issue a new one for you.

Text 3

M: I know it's somewhere. I always put it right there on that high shelf, so the kids can't reach it. But I can't find it now.

W: Well, Kevin has started climbing on a chair to get things now. You may need to find a new hiding place for your valuable objects!

Text 4

M: Do you mind if I leave the meeting early? I feel a bit under the weather.

W: I'm sorry to hear that. Why don't you see a doctor?

M: I'll fix an appointment on my way home.

Text 5

W: I tried to imagine what it would be like to start a new job, and it seemed a bit challenging. But now I find it's a fresh and entirely different experience.

M: Yes, it's exciting to have new opportunities and learn new skills.

Text 6

M: Liz, it's almost bedtime. Go brush your teeth.

W: No, not yet! I still haven't memorized the poem Mrs. Green gave us. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and...” Oh, I keep forgetting what comes next.

M: You know, when I was your age, I used to turn things I had to memorize into pictures in my head.

W: Did that work?

M: Absolutely! Like with this one — now, imagine there are two roads right in front of you...

Text 7

M: Katy, it's been a while since we've seen each other. Are you ready to play tennis against me?

W: Ready as I'll ever be, Paul. But I'm a little out of practice, to be honest. I haven't played tennis in months — if not years.

M: Oh, come on. You've got talent, and talent doesn't go away.

W: Thanks for your confidence in me. I hope I haven't lost my touch.

M: Before we start, I hope you don't mind me asking a slightly personal question, but why on earth are you wearing a cute T-shirt?

W: It's my lucky shirt. I wore it the last time I won a tough match, so I put it on today. I'm going to need all the help I can get.

M: Don't worry. We make our own luck. You'll be just fine.

Text 8

W: Hi Tom, are you available this Sunday afternoon?

M: I think so. What's going on?

W: We're holding a “Technology Help” event at the Sunnyside Community Center to help seniors with their phones. Would you like to join to be a volunteer?

M: Sure. What do I need to do?

W: Teach them how to use apps for video calls, reading news, and making online payments.

M: But I'm not an expert. Do I need any special training?

W: Not at all! We'll provide simple guidebooks. Just bring your patience and smile.

M: OK. When will it start?

W: We planned to start at 2 p.m., but we have moved it to 3 p.m. to allow seniors to take a nap. Volunteers are expected to arrive half an hour early.

M: OK. I'll be there on time!

Text 9

M: Fairfield Rentals. How can I help you?

W: Hello. My name's Jane Ryder. I'm calling from the UK. We're hoping to find somewhere to rent in Fairfield, Canada.

M: May I have your email address? So we can send you the information.

W: I'll give you my husband's. It's Richard@visiontech.co.uk.

M: And the occupation?

W: Richard works for an advertising company. He'll be reassigned to their Fairfield branch, so my son and I are going with him. And I'm a doctor at a hospital.

M: What kind of accommodation are you looking for?

W: An apartment with two bedrooms. And we'll be shipping all our furniture over, so we don't need any. Before we come, we'll sell our fridge, so we'd like the apartment to have one.

M: How about the location?

W: We'd like to be fairly close to a school.

M: Got it. Can I just ask how you heard about us? Obviously not from our TV commercials if you're living in the UK.

W: It was Max. We studied at the same university in America. He spent a few months in Fairfield last year and pointed us in the direction of your website.

Text 10

M: Today I'd like to share something about Helen Beatrix Potter. Born on July 28th, 1866, Potter was educated at home by tutors and had little contact with children of her age. After her younger brother was sent to boarding school, animals became her only friends. She always spent long hours watching her pets and drawing pictures of them. Meanwhile, in most of the first 15 years of her life, Potter often spent summer holidays in the country, painting and exploring the area, which developed her imagination and observation. These experiences built her painting skills and allowed her to develop her talent at an early age. In September 1893, Potter told a story about four little rabbits to a little boy, which was the beginning of the tale of Peter Rabbit. Nine years later, the tale of Peter Rabbit was published and became an immediate success. It was followed the next year by The Tailor of Gloucester. Nowadays, the tale of Peter Rabbit has been translated into 36 languages and has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide.
