Unit 3B

Text 1

M: Your daughter has won first prize in the contest? How old is she, Mary?

W: Just 13.

M: Really? Two years older than my son.

Text 2

W: What horrible weather! I'm almost roasting in the sun.

M: Yes, I'm thirsty. It's a huge mistake for us to go shopping today. I'd rather stay at home.

W: I didn't expect it would be so hot. The graduation party is tomorrow, so I have to buy a beautiful dress today.

Text 3

M: What did you get for your birthday this year, Catherine?

W: My grandpa gave me a watch, and my sister got me a bicycle. But the coolest gift was from my daddy: a new car!

M: Wow, you're so lucky!

Text 4

W: Where's your computer?

M: I moved it. I was sitting opposite the window and the sun shone in my eyes. So I've moved it into the bedroom.

W: Oh, that will be noisy when you work overtime at night.

Text 5

W: Good morning! I need to borrow a copy of Pride and Prejudice for my literature class.

M: Let me check. Oh, we have three copies, but two are already checked out. The last one is on the second shelf, Section F.

W: Great, thanks! How long can I keep it?

M: For two weeks.

Text 6

M: Hello, is that Anna? This is Colin.

W: Hi, Colin, how are you?

M: I'm OK but I'm looking for a summer holiday job. I'm wondering if you can help.

W: Are you? My dad needs another assistant in his shop.

M: Working with you? Tell me something about the job.

W: Well, it's full-time, five days a week, during my whole summer holiday. I get four pounds fifty an hour, but at first you'll get four pounds. Some people get five pounds.

M: Perhaps I'll go to see your dad. Where is the shop exactly?

W: It's on Pine Street.

M: Thanks, Anna. Goodbye. Wish me luck!

Text 7

M: Linda! I was looking for you. I wanted to ask you what you are planning to do this weekend.

W: What's up, Doug? I was supposed to watch a concert with my sister, but she canceled our appointment at the last minute. Now I have no plans.

M: We are planning to go climbing on Saturday. You must join us.

W: That sounds great, but I haven't climbed for a while. I'll get tired easily.

M: All you have to do is walk and enjoy the scenery along the way. The mountain is not that tall. There's no way you can't do it. Plus, we are going to have a delicious picnic at the top of the mountain.

W: OK. I certainly love picnics. I am really into the climbing now! I'd better get a good pair of shoes.

Text 8

M: You've been looking kind of tired lately. What's wrong?

W: I couldn't sleep well in the past week. You know, I've been working on a big project in our department.

M: You are not alone. Many people say they do not get good sleep at night.

W: Are there any ways to get through this?

M: Yes. First, leave your work aside an hour before bed. Second, try to eat in the early evening hours. Try small amounts of food with protein or healthy fats like cheese or peanut butter on wholegrain bread. Third, keep away from phones.

W: Those are easy to do for me except the last point. I always lose myself in watching short videos before bed.

M: I think you should get over it. If you are still having a hard time getting a good night's sleep after more than one month of trying, it is time to go to see a doctor.

W: Okay, I will try my best. By the way, I feel very tired now. Can you help me sort out these reports?

M: With pleasure.

Text 9

M: Hello! I'm looking for a wedding photographer. My friend John referred me to you. He also showed me your website.

W: Oh thanks, that's nice to hear. Could you first tell me the date and location, so I can check if I'm available?

M: Sure! It's July 2nd, and it will be at my parents' house in Halifax.

W: It looks like I am unavailable that day. I'm flying away to shoot another wedding. Now, when you checked my website, you must have seen the work of my colleague Jack. Would you be interested in having him shoot your wedding?

M: Pity. Yes, I've seen his work, and I liked it as well.

W: I'm looking at his schedule and he happens to be available that day.

M: Would prices be comparable?

W: We charge the same rates.

M: Can I choose which photos I want to print?

W: Of course. You'll receive a link to an online photo gallery of the best 200 photos within 3 weeks.

M: That sounds great.

Text 10

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. I'm Jenny Jackson. The weather here in Juárez has become unbearable. With no rain for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of them have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes — if they walk on foot, at least — between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heatwave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited professor Torres to our studio this evening.
