M: I have been working in this school for a score of years.

W: Well, my mom has been working here twice as long as you.

M: Here is a prescription for some pills. Come back and see me if you still don’t feel well.

W: Thank you very much for seeing me.

M: Did you mind coming back by coach instead of by train?

W: No, we didn’t mind at all. It took a lot longer, but it was very comfortable and it was much cheaper.

M: I’ll be back in a minute. Can you keep an eye on my luggage please?

W: Sure, I’ll be glad to.

W: Were you always interested in starting the food business?

M: Actually, I was interested in sale at first because that’s what both my parents do. But I used to work part time in a cafe when I was a kid, and that’s what got me interested.

W: What was the first place you opened?

M: I bought a cheap place near a university, and I started selling lunches to the students. The place was always crowded at lunch time. So, one day I sold it. With that money, I opened a much bigger place downtown.

M: My mother and father will be here on Friday.

W: Yeah...

M: What’s the matter? Don’t you like them?

W: Sure I do, but I don’t like them smoking in the house.

M: They’re just here for the weekend. It’s not a problem, is it?

W: Second hand smoke is a big problem around here. It’s dangerous — especially for the baby.

M: I know what you mean. But what can we do?

W: We can ask them to smoke outside.

M: I guess you’re right.

W: Jack, I hear you bought a new car.

M: I did just buy a car, but it’s not exactly a new one. It was made in the 1950s. Here, take a look at this photo.

W: You are right. This car hasn’t been new for a long time! Couldn’t you afford a newer car?

M: Believe it or not, this car cost almost as much as a new one.

W: Really? How could that be?

M: Well, a lot of cars from the 40s, 50s and 60s have become collector’s items and worth a lot of money.

W: But this one doesn’t seem to be in very good shape.

M: The engine is still in good condition. I plan to fix up the inside and paint the car myself. Then it will be worth even more money.

W: So then you’ll resell it?

M: No, I don’t plan to resell it, but I might enter it in some classical auto shows. Maybe I’ll win a prize.

M: Have you read today’s newspaper?

W: Not yet. Is there anything special in it?

M: Yes. A ship from Tokyo to New York was wrecked in an hour and a half after it set out.

W: How many people were there on board?

M: They say there were 158, including twelve women and two children. They were lucky. All the people on board had jumped into the sea before the ship sank.

W: Why did you say they were lucky?

M: A big ship with more than 200 trained sailors on board happened to be passing by. You know sailors are all good at swimming and helping a drowning person is no hard work for them at all.

W: So all the people were saved?

M: Not all of them. There was an old man who had died of heart attack before a sailor could bring him onto the ship.

W: It’s really special news.

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s not a very big country, about the same size as Great Britain, and it has a much smaller population. There are two official languages, English and Maori.

New Zealand is divided into two main islands, North Island and South Island. Then to the south of South Island there’s a much smaller island called Stewart Island, but anyway, the most important islands are North Island and South Island. Most people live in North Island, where the two biggest cities are, Wellington, the capital city, and Auckland, which is actually the biggest city in terms of population: over one million people live there. Wellington is on the south coast of North Island. It’s a very nice place with a beautiful harbor. Auckland is in the northeast of North Island, on the coast too. People call it "The City of Sails" because of all the sailing boats there, and all the area to the north of Auckland is known as Northland. It’s the hottest part of the country with lots of beaches, which are very popular for holidays.

Both North Island and South Island are very mountainous. There are several volcanoes on North Island, and South Island is really divided into two halves by a big range of mountains that runs from north to south, called Southern Alps. They’re very beautiful, with lots of lakes in the south. That’s the area where most people go skiing, and some do other adventure sports such as climbing or sky diving.
