Text 1

M: What do you recommend for lunch?

W: The steak special is great. Chicken and salad are popular, too.

M: I'll have your first recommendation.

Text 2

W: The newly-released comedy is well received. Want to catch the 9 p.m. show this Saturday?

M: That might be too late for the last subway. How about an hour earlier?

W: Sure, that will work.

Text 3

M: What are people playing on that court?

W: Pickleball. The community center started classes last week.

M: Does it cost a lot?

W: Not really. It's designed for people of all ages to stay active. You can try it.

Text 4

W: Have you finished the dishes? Mom said we should clean up before doing our school project.

M: I did the plates. You're doing the pots, right? Remember last time you left the sink a mess?

Text 5

M: There's a new exhibition at the Natural History Museum all about Chinese farming methods. Would you like to go and see it with me?

W: If you come with me to the architecture talk this afternoon, I'll go. Deal?

Text 6

W: Have you seen the news? A surgeon shared a video showing how DeepSeek was used to help identify the cause of a complex brain condition.

M: Really? Tell me more.

W: The AI completed a detailed, expert-level analysis in just 18 seconds. It's amazing how advanced medical technology has become.

M: That is impressive. However, many professionals remind us that AI is still only a tool. At present, it just helps with doctors' judgment. But it cannot offer care nor face-to-face interaction with patients.

W: Exactly. The key is to use AI as support, not as the final decision-maker.

M: Welcome to our show, Amazing Animals. Dr. Smith, You've been studying dogs for many years. Could you tell us about your latest research on how noises affect them?

W: Sure. We've been studying how loud, sudden sounds — like thunder, fireworks, or car horns — can cause strong reactions in dogs and impact their mood.

M: What kind of reactions do they usually have?

W: It varies. Some dogs may bark to show their anxiety, while others might hide, tremble, or seek comfort.

M: What can we do to help them in these situations?

W: There are a few key things. First, a quiet, warm corner with their bed and toys gives them a sense of security. Second, avoid punishing them for being scared, as that increases anxiety. For severe cases, consulting a vet is recommended.

M: Thank you for the advice. Do you have any video recordings of these behaviors to show us?

W: Yes, I do. I'm going to play some for you right now.

Text 8

W: Mr. Patel, I've been reading about Australia's new policy that restricts internet use for children under 18, and I'm really concerned about its impact on my son.

M: Well, the policy aims to protect young people from online risks, such as harmful content, bullying, and privacy issues.

W: But doesn't that also limit their access to educational resources?

M: That's a fair concern. However, the policy allows access to educational websites, and teens can also communicate online for essential purposes.

W: I see. Still, how can we balance keeping them safe while supporting their learning and personal development?

M: It comes down to parents' involvement. Parents need to guide their children's internet use and help them become responsible online users.

W: I agree. I'll make sure to talk with him about using the internet wisely.

Text 9

M: Have you heard about the folk music concert on campus? It's scheduled for the first Friday after we return from the winter break.

W: Really? What's special about it?

M: It'll be a feast for your ears! It's called “Spring Melodies.” There will be a guqin solo first, followed by students playing the erhu and the pipa together. The concert will even include some well-known scenes from Beijing Opera.

W: That sounds amazing! Can students take part, or is it just for watching?

M: Both! If you play an instrument, you can join the campus music club and perform with them. The club is actively looking for new members for this event.

W: How can we get tickets?

M: They're free. The student center will open online reservations this coming Monday. Just visit the student center website to book yours.

W: Perfect! What a lively way to welcome the new season!

M: Good morning! We are excited to launch our heartwarming Vlog Campaign — “This Dish, Just for Family!”. This project invites you to express gratitude and affection through personally-prepared cuisines. We encourage you to create a 5-minute video blog, recording the process of preparing a meaningful dish for your loved ones. Your video should convey your reasons for choosing the recipe, show the ingredients, display the cooking steps, and — most importantly — capture the genuine reactions and feedback from your family members as they enjoy your dish. All submissions must be uploaded to the Student Union website no later than February 15th. The guest teachers will evaluate the submitted works in March, and the selected vlogs will be shared across our official campus platforms in April. Outstanding participants will receive the “Heartwarming Chef” certificate along with a gift set. Let's create lasting memories over a simple meal and celebrate the bonds. We eagerly anticipate your creative and touching submissions.
