M: Let’s jog or go for a bicycle ride.
W: Well, I think going swimming in the pool is a great way for us to avoid the strong sunshine on such a day.
W: Honey, I think we should buy a good guidebook and study it before our trip to New Zealand.
M: We could, but usually guidebooks are overpriced. What about the library?
W: I’ve never seen a more boring film than this. I wonder why the hero died 15 minutes just after the film began. By the way, what’s the time by your watch?
M: It’s 9:15. The film will be over in half an hour.
W: What do you plan to do after school?
M: There will be an important test at the end of this month, so I’d like to study for it. Would you like to join me?
W: I’d like to. Group learning is certainly better than learning alone.
M: Mary, have you heard of the sports meeting to be held next Sunday?
W: Of course. But I will have to be looking after my sister at home that day.
M: Many of our classmates can’t wait to participate. I’m just one of them.
W: How I wish I could attend the sports meeting!
W: Good afternoon. This is Peace Hotel. What can I do for you?
M: Good afternoon. I’m sorry to inform you that I have to call off my reservation because I have something urgent to deal with.
W: OK. Please tell me your name, phone number, and date of visit.
M: Ben Smith at 010 - 567 - 5378, May 2 to May 6.
W: Well, Mr. Smith, I see your information on the screen and now your reservation is called off.
M: Thanks a lot.
W: It’s my pleasure.
W: Bob, could you help your aunt at her shop every Saturday?
M: Mom, I can’t, because I need to prepare for a basketball match. I must make full use of my free time to practise with my teammates.
W: OK. Your hard work will surely pay off. Then what do you intend to do during your coming summer vacation?
M: I want to work part-time. Today is Wednesday. I want to apply for some summer jobs that I am interested in tomorrow.
W: Great. Many successful people began to work when they were your age.
M: Yes. Summer jobs are helpful. I will learn about budgeting, saving and other important financial principles as well as get job experience.
W: You are right. They can also prepare you for your future career.
M: What are you doing, Erin?
W: I’m watching a television series about the history of China.
M: Is that in Chinese?
W: Yes. It has English translations at the bottom of the screen, though.
M: What are you writing there?
W: I’m writing down words that I often hear in the show. I’ll look them up on a translation app afterward.
M: Why? Are you trying to learn Chinese?
W: Well…I feel I should learn some words now that I’m spending so much time watching the program. This helps me to better understand the plot.
M: That’s an interesting approach to watching TV. I watched a movie in French after school several weeks ago, but my French just wasn’t good enough to help me follow the plot. I wish I had known more!
W: You can turn to some free French learning tools, always study French with audio and also do just as I do.
M: Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to the tennis court?
W: It’s right in the sports center, just a five-minute walk from here.
M: I’m new here, so I don’t know where the sports center is, either.
W: Head down this main road for two blocks. Turn right at the clock tower, and then you’ll be on Butte Avenue. Walk on Butte Avenue for three blocks, and...
M: That’s already five blocks. Are you sure it’s only a five-minute walk?
W: Hmm...it could be more like ten minutes.
M: I don’t really want to walk that far. Is there a bus stopping there?
W: Yeah, there’s one in front of the pool, but the bus service is super slow during the day.
M: I guess I’d better head there on foot, then. What is the tennis court like?
W: We’re really lucky. It’s the best in the area. About five or six years ago, a famous basketball player left a bunch of money to rebuild the sports center.
M: Nice! Well, I’m meeting a friend at the tennis court in fifteen minutes, so I’d better get going.
Experts note that an unhealthy lifestyle may put you at risk of heart disease, which is the number one cause of death around the world. The main cause of heart attacks is blockages in blood. When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many chemicals that will increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
Researchers claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may not make the best decisions. They may overeat or undereat. They may not get enough exercise or sleep. And all of this can lead to health problems. So doctors urge us to have a balanced diet, take regular exercise, and get enough sleep. But there is something else that you can do all the time. And it is free and easy. Smile!
Anand Chockalingam is a heart disease specialist. He thinks a smile may be one way to help and advises his patients to smile more. When people smile, the brain’s wiring gets changed. The chemicals that are released by the brain are more positive. He says that smiling is a helpful step in fighting physical and emotional stress as well as its harmful effects on human health. This is not just New Age advice. Several studies can help prove that Chockalingam’s urge to smile more is reasonable and useful. Since smiling has such a great health effect, why not smile now?
