W: The sign says these trousers are 50% off. Does that refer to the regular price or the sale price?

M: It’s 50% off the sale price. Originally, the trousers were 150 dollars but the price was brought down to 100 dollars in our last sale.

M: Let’s take a look at the board on the wall. I don’t think there is a menu on every table.

W: Oh, what a huge board! And what a variety of dishes! And there are detailed descriptions beside every picture just like a piece of art.

W: Donald, it’s past your bedtime. Why are you in the kitchen? Didn’t you get enough to eat?

M: I’m trying to check my email. This is the only place where my phone gets a signal.

W: You can do that in the morning. Right now, you should go to bed.

W: I’m sorry I’m late! My cat went out this morning, and I still can’t find her anywhere.

M: It’s okay, but please call next time. We’ll have two meetings this morning, and Mr. Smith will arrive at 9:00. Be prepared.

W: OK.

M: What is on Channel 6 tonight?

W: There is a dance performance. This dance is very energetic.

M: What is it like?

W: A group of people sitting side by side move their arms, shoulders and heads in time to the music.

W: This is such a cool museum, Matt. There are things from all over the world.

M: Yes. The artworks are wonderful. They were created by some very famous artists.

W: Have you been to the Palace Museum in Beijing? It is my favorite.

M: Yes, I’ve been there. I’ve also visited the Louvre in Paris. There is some really impressive art there. I waited in line for about three hours to see the Mona Lisa. And I really want to go to the British Museum.

W: I read that the British Museum preserves culture and art that stretch across 2 million years of human history. It has a collection of over 8 million objects!

M: I could spend a long time in that museum.

W: I could spend a long time in any museum!

M: Last night when I was looking at the sky, I was thinking, "How cool would it be to live on the moon?"

W: People have been talking about it since the last century.

M: I hope one day we can live on the moon. You know I’ve always wanted to be an astronaut, but not just an astronaut.

W: You want to be a space pioneer?

M: Yeah.

W: That seems kind of cool. But I think it is hard to realize considering all the expense and complexity. You’d have to design and build special buildings. Just think how many trips you’d need to make back and forth to get the raw materials!

M: We humans have always wanted to explore new areas. I think it’s part of our nature. Plus, it could be a fresh start.

M: About a week or two ago, I watched a soccer game, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire game. It was so exciting!

W: Where does that come from, "on the edge of my seat"? What is that?

M: It’s a funny idiom. And it means getting extremely excited.

W: Idiom? What are other examples of idioms?

M: "Pull my leg" — that means playing jokes on me. And "cool my heels", which means being forced to wait.

W: I bet a lot of non-native speakers think they’re just silly sentences that someone has said.

M: It’s probably very hard to understand them. They’re so confusing sometimes. I seldom use them, but sometimes it’s the perfect way to describe how I feel.

W: It’s true. And it’s a natural part of what we speak.

M: It is! Wow, I’m going to think about that much more often.

W: I will be on the edge of my seat.

W: Welcome to the department, Jack. Let me show you around and tell you about your new colleagues. I’ll introduce you to them all later.

M: Great. Thanks. So, who are those people over there?

W: That’s the order management team. Lucy deals with the new orders. She’s the one with short, dark hair.

M: In the purple dress?

W: Yeah, that’s right. You’ll probably work closely with her while you are learning about our ordering process.

M: Got it, thanks. And who’s that over there? The man who’s on the phone.

W: Oh, you mean the one by the window? In the green shirt? Ah, that’s Tim. He’s the marketing director. And that’s Maria next to the computer. She’s responsible for the IT systems.

M: OK, I’ll try to remember all of this. I should probably be taking notes!

W: Don’t worry about it. For now it’s just good to put some faces to names.

M: OK. And who do I talk to about setting up my mobile phone with email access? Also Maria?

W: No, you need to talk to Alex who works in communications. He can help you. That’s him over there, next to the printer.

M: Thanks. I’ll introduce myself to him later.

I am here today to announce that I am running for the student body president! Many of my teachers were trying to convince me to run, and my parents thought it would be good for my future, but the real reason is you guys. I have been at this school for three full years, and I want to do something special before I leave for the University of Texas next year. Many people have promised to put new soda machines in the cafeteria or build a new baseball field. These might be popular choices, but I’d rather do something that will help everyone. I want to set up a computer lab that all students and teachers will have access to. Only a few public high schools in Nevada still don’t have modern computers. That’s true in many other states such as California. Studies show that technology skills are what employers are looking for in the 21st century, and everyone here should learn them. We’ll be able to offer a whole new set of classes, and we can use the computer lab to do our homework, research topics for papers, and relax between classes. Vote for me if you want to see this great idea become a reality. Thank you!
