I think the best time to visit China is October. I usually travel with my family in October. I went to Xi'an in October last year and Hangzhou in October the year before last. The weather in October in China is usually very nice. Most of China in this month has mild temperatures as the summer heat has gone. However, do avoid the first week of October.

If you have no time in October, you can also come in late spring. I went to Beijing in May this year. The weather was very comfortable there. In late spring the temperature is about 20 degrees centigrade, except the extreme northwest and northeast. Mountains in Guilin and Mount Huangshan are really beautiful at this time of the year. Also, it's not too crowded to travel.
