W: You should ask Michael. He's been everywhere, so he always has a travel story.

  

W: Did you see? The blue car was on the wrong side of the road.

M: That car is red. Are you confusing your red, blue and pink?

W: I don't mean the one you're pointing at, but the one next to it. It's the same color as ours.  

 

W: You look great. Do you think I should have bought a new suit for the wedding?

M: No, I love that suit. You looked wonderful for your interview.

W: I must have picked the right clothes. I got the job. But I'm not sure if it's right for a party.  

 

M: If ten of my friends come to our party, will the group be too big?

W: That works for me. Plus, five of my friends can come. Will your three brothers also come?

M: Oh, they can't make it.

  

M: Where is the best place to buy food in the city? The supermarket in my neighborhood often does not have fresh food.

W: If you want fish, there is a fisherman's market down by the river every day. There's also a farmer's market on the last Friday of the month.

W: I know what you mean, but how else can we travel quickly from one country to another?

M: Yes, it's a pity that buses and trains are so slow compared with flying.

W: Air travel creates so much pollution. And when we travel this way, we are part of the problem.

M: This is why we need people to study science to find ways to help the environment. I'm glad you have chosen it as a subject.

W: Why didn't you choose it?

M: I became a doctor to help people, and that's why Mom became a nurse.

M: Working in China is a great opportunity for a Westerner, but sometimes living alone in a foreign country can be lonely. The nights with no company can pass slowly. Before I had time to make friends in the country, I decided to pass my spare time by catching up on my reading. Before moving to China, I didn't have much spare time. And when I did, I filled it by tending the garden and watching TV, but mainly listening to music. In China, I first started reading books about people I was interested in — pop stars, actors and film stars. I got through my books quite fast — one every week. When I ran out of celebrity books, I moved on to novels and this was when I really began to love reading. I read some classics recommended by others and eventually I found some modern authors I really liked, such as Ian McEwan, Jo Nesbø and, my favorite, Ann Patchett. If you ask me what I like about Ann Patchett's books, I might find it difficult to explain. They aren't crime stories or mysteries. In some of them, nothing much happens at all. But she has a talent for making the reader interested in her characters. You just want to know what they will do next in their quite normal lives. I am so glad that being lonely gave me the opportunity to discover the magic of books.
