W: Yeah, but I always wash my hands and wear a mask when I take public transportation.
M: But you don't wear it when you're in the office. It's better to be safe than sorry.

M: Eastgate! That's twenty kilometres away from here!
W: Yeah, I know. So I've got a long drive to work these days. But we bought a really big house with a nice garden.
M: Great! You're a landscape gardener, aren't you? So you'd be working much more in the summer.
W: Uh huh. But actually I've been working as a city planner for the last year or so.
M: Oh...Why did you change your job?
W: Well...Two years ago I was working so hard that I never had any time to be with my kids. They were growing up really quickly, but I was always driving around from one project to the next. So I was hardly ever spending time at home.
M: Well, it's better now, I expect. You're working for the city, I suppose.
W: You mean in the planning department? No, actually I'm running my own company.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: For most people, learning a foreign language is hard. But why? First, it's different from other subjects. We can't learn a new language like we learn other subjects. To learn a new language, we can't just remember a bunch of information. We need to know how to use this information. It's similar to learning a new instrument. I can read tons of books about playing the piano, but would this actually make me a master piano player? Probably not. New languages aren't something we learn about. Instead, they're like a skill, so it's something we learn to do. And in order to learn a skill, we have to practice it. Second, our mother tongue influences our brain. When we're kids, we build languages on top of our environment. So, when kids learn the word "dog", they associate that word with the image of a dog. This changes when we grow older. Adults' brains become influenced by their native language, not their environment. So when adult learners learn the word "dog", they usually associate this word with the word for "dog" in their native language. What ends up happening is when adults speak a new language, they still think in their native language. This makes it more difficult to use grammar patterns or remember new words.

Sometimes he listens to music late at night with his radio on loudly; sometimes he borrows something from me that I need to use for studying, like my dictionary or computer. I can't concentrate on my work for more than a few minutes. It's terrible.
M: You should ask your parents to deal with your brother. Your exams are more important. Your parents should understand that.
W: That's a good idea, Matthew. I'll ask my dad for help tonight. My brother will listen to him. And I'll also think about going to the library at the weekend. It's nice to have a change sometimes when you're studying. How's your review going, Matthew?
M: My problem is that I just can't remember anything from history. I read a page and ten minutes later I've forgotten it.
W: That's not unusual. You should try writing down what you've just read. It's amazing how much more you will remember that way. Sometimes I even sing my notes. It's a bit embarrassing, but it will help to remember lots of information.

M: OK! So my talk tonight is called Psychology in Advertising, but I'm going to start with a little story. In the 18th century, hardly anyone in Prussia ate potatoes or rice, because the main meal for almost everyone was bread. But there was a problem with bread: in those days, sometimes the wheat didn't grow very well and people, especially poor people, would have nothing to eat.So when the king called Frederick heard about the potato, he immediately ordered everyone in the country to start growing potatoes. But to his surprise, they refused. Frederick was a very clever man, and although there were no psychologists in 1774, he certainly had a talent for understanding the psychology of his people. So he soon came up with a very interesting plan. First, he planted potatoes in his palace garden. Next, he sent soldiers to guard it. As soon as people saw the garden and the soldiers, they started asking each other "What could be in that field that is worth so much?" And of course, as soon as they found out that the field was full of potatoes, they all wanted some. You see, once people believed they were not allowed to eat potatoes, they immediately wanted to have them. And that's good psychology.

Welcome to Brighton. Brighton is one of the most original and creative cities in England, and, unsurprisingly, it is one of the most popular destinations for a weekend break. With its famous nightlife, wide range of restaurants and diverse shops in the lanes, Brighton has everything. Knowing where to go and which hotels are available can be vital to ensure your stay is an enjoyable one.
Brighton Beach is perhaps what Brighton is most famous for and probably the first place to visit. Unsurprisingly, there are a wide range of hotels all along the seafront, but with their sea views and prime locations, the prices there are higher. For slightly cheaper options you simply have to venture a little further along the seafront. There are a number of slightly smaller and cheaper hotels towards Kemptown.
In Brighton you can't miss visiting the North Laine, where there are many clothes shops. There are also many places to sit down and have a drink. It is a unique shopping and dining experience.
The city is small and the most attractions are within walking distance of one another, and for those that aren't, there are a number of bus companies running reliable services in the city. Even the farthest hotels around Kemptown are within 25 minutes' walk of the beach, so wherever you stay, you are going to be able to visit all of the attractions.

M: Working in China is a great opportunity for a Westerner, but sometimes living alone in a foreign country can be lonely. The nights with no company can pass slowly. Before I had time to make friends in the country, I decided to pass my spare time by catching up on my reading. Before moving to China, I didn't have much spare time. And when I did, I filled it by tending the garden and watching TV, but mainly listening to music. In China, I first started reading books about people I was interested in — pop stars, actors and film stars. I got through my books quite fast — one every week. When I ran out of celebrity books, I moved on to novels and this was when I really began to love reading. I read some classics recommended by others and eventually I found some modern authors I really liked, such as Ian McEwan, Jo Nesbø and, my favorite, Ann Patchett. If you ask me what I like about Ann Patchett's books, I might find it difficult to explain. They aren't crime stories or mysteries. In some of them, nothing much happens at all. But she has a talent for making the reader interested in her characters. You just want to know what they will do next in their quite normal lives. I am so glad that being lonely gave me the opportunity to discover the magic of books.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire,England. This means that it had been built before recorded history began.Experts say that the first stones were put there by people between 3000 and 2000 BC.That makes Stonehenge one of the oldest constructions in the world. However,it's not like the pyramids in Egypt or the Great Wall of China.Stonehenge is just a collection of large stones that are balanced on the top of each other. Some of the supporting stones are more than 7.3 meters tall.In comparison, the basketball player Yao Ming is 2.29 meters tall. And like the Great Wall of China,Stonehenge wasn't built in a day.In fact, experts believe that there are many stages in the construction of Stonehenge, the last of which was finished around 1600 BC.Most scientists believe that it is an ancient burial ground.Other people believe it has important religious associations.Scientists have been studying Stonehenge for over 400 years, and they are still finding new things. In 2014,scientists found more burial grounds that they believe come from 4000 BC.

This is feeding the monkeys at four o'clock in the primate centre. Please don't feed the animals with any sweets, biscuits or fruits, because these can upset the animals' normal diet. You can assist the staff in feeding the monkeys with specially prepared food, and in playing with the monkeys, too. The last show will begin at 4:30 in the bird cage. Dr. Taylor will be with you as your guide. He'll point out to you more than 300 species of birds from South America. W: This is the 6 o'clock news for Tuesday 25 November. And first the headlines: The government has promised to help the poor farmers in the northern part of the country who haven't seen rain for nearly two years. And in Sydney a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which landed in the sea shortly after take-off. Transport workers are on strike in Melbourne asking for a pay rise. And the strike may spread to other states. Now let's focus on the school children. They were traveling in a plane from Sydney to Queensland to take part in a musical concert. They found themselves swimming to the shore when their plane had to land in the sea just three minutes after taking off from Sydney Airport. The pilot managed to bring the aircraft and its 50 passengers down safely in the calm waters of Botany Bay where boats were able to come to the rescue of the children. It was a weekend, and there were hundreds of boats in the bay enjoying the good weather. This undoubtedly helped the rescue operation. The children said they owed their lives to the skill of the pilot. But the pilot replied modestly that it was all part of a day's work. However, all their musical instruments were lost and they never got to play at their concert.

M: Oh, I just remembered I hadn't done my science homework yet. I'm searching online for some information about that.
M: I kicked a player out of our team for his misbehavior last week.
W: I heard he apologized and promised not to do that again. Why not give him a second chance?

M: Yes. I'll try those ideas.

M: Oh dear! Let me log on the system and check whether they have been shipped or not.
W: I hope not. I don't know what I'd do with that many.
M: You could give them away as presents for free. Ha-ha! I'm just kidding. We'd take them back.
W: That's a relief.

W: There is good news and bad news. The good news is that no one will be fired within your team.
M: They will be relieved. But what's the bad news?
W: One of the other teams is going to be removed. You know, it has been a difficult decision, but we have to look at what is best for the business. Unfortunately, they are not delivering the figures as you are.
M: What if I took over their team temporarily to try and get them to our level?
W: Would you be willing to do that?
M: Absolutely, if it means they could keep their jobs. Well, I can give it a shot.

W: Oh, that's really great! I got some water on it last week and I was afraid that the water might have ruined it. How much is a new battery?
M: It's six hundred and ninety-nine plus tax and we not only change your battery but also guarantee it for a year. If you have the watch cleaned here we guarantee it for an additional three months.
W: That sounds a good deal! I'll get the battery here. When will it be ready?
M: Usually I can do it right away, but right now I'm busy with a large shipment of watches. They all need to be fixed by this afternoon. Can you leave your watch here until about 5 p.m.?
W: OK. See you then.

W: Mr. Brown, which do you prefer, brandy or Moutai?
M: Brandy and Moutai are too strong for me.

M: Let me try...Well, how is that?
W: Fine, you are learning fast. Well, to your health and success in business, cheers!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the City Zoo. Now I'd like to explain the program we've arranged for you here this afternoon. There'll be three animal shows. The first show will begin at three o'clock in the aquarium. You'll certainly be fascinated by the dolphins' and the whales' funny actions. After that comes the second show. If you have any questions about these shows or other events at the zoo, please ask the people at the information desk at the main entrance.

W: Hi, Mr. Murphy. I called you at breakfast time and again after lunch. My fridge needs an urgent repair.
M: OK. I'm having dinner now, but I'll come straight afterwards.
M: I thought you didn't like cars in that color. You said there were so many blue cars on the street, and you thought they were boring.
W: But this is a special one.
M: I liked the black one we saw yesterday. The grey one was OK as well.
W: Come inside now. You've been playing football for two hours. It's time for bed.
M: Oh, Mom! It's only nine o'clock. None of my friends ever go to bed before ten.
W: Maybe none of them have to be up as early as you.
W: Cut. Start from the top! Leo, please, let's try that line again with more enthusiasm.

M: Come on. Are you saying I'm a couch potato?
W: Yeah. I really think watching TV is a waste of time.
M: Well, I disagree. Some programmes are bad, like those soap operas. But what about the sports or news programmes? You watch those sometimes, don't you?
W: Well, actually, for the news, I prefer the Internet.
M: Why?
W: Because it can give you a lot more information.

W: Oh yes, I know. I bought my boots there.
M: Yes, that's the one. Everyone used to have their kids' feet measured there. They had some nice but a little old-fashioned shoes.
W: So, what do you want to tell me about the shop?

W: The exercise will be good for us on such a cold day.

W: It's a pity there are just empty buildings here now. I'd be glad to have seen the things they had inside.
M: We can look around the museum later. They have some things there.
W: Oh great! I never get bored looking at things like that. I love the history of these places.

M:I saw an article in a magazine about some couples who had been there. Both of us got interested.
W: Weren't you scared?
M: A bit, but before we left we had a training course. It was tough but taught us about surviving in sub-zero conditions. The worst danger we discovered was falling into holes in ice.
W: Could you get in touch with the outside world there?
M: There was satellite communication equipment.
W: So didn't you see anyone else for a whole year?
M: Well, there was that time when we were having the usual canned food and there was a funny noise. Jill thought it was the wind but it was getting closer. Suddenly the room was flooded with light from the window. I opened the door and found a box in the snow. I looked up and saw a plane flying away. They were passing nearby and someone told them that we were out there. They dropped us a box with some fresh fruit and vegetables. It was a lovely surprise.

W: And now it's time to find out what's on at the Arts Center. This week's entertainment starts on Monday with a play based on the novel Birds on the Wing by author Philip Cruise. Set on a Greek island in the last century, it tells a story of true love that succeeds in the face of great difficulties. Tuesday brings a dance workshop, led by Diana Fransen. This exciting new mix of exercise and dance is great fun. The two hours will be over before you realize it. There are only places for 20 people, so book now if you're interested. The Matsuri drummers from Japan come to the Arts Center on Wednesday. If you think drumming is just a lot of loud noise, think again — their clothes and effects are amazing. On Thursday a famous band from England, directed by Leslie Ager, performs a concert of popular pieces. The jazz singer and guitarist, Maddie Felix, comes on Friday evening as part of her concert tour to celebrate her new CD. There are still a few tickets left, but hurry. They're selling out fast. To book tickets for any of these events, phone the box office on 714170, or check out the website.
