M: She must be playing somewhere beyond the garden.
W: Sorry, but I don't want this skirt. That's too expensive for me.
M: What about this one? It's 20 dollars cheaper. But it is not made of cotton.
M: Now some doctors are strongly encouraging bicycle exercise.

Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. She bought me some warm suits, dresses, and business type clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend!

M: We need tax money to build a better future for us so that the large groups of people can move into our town.
W: The number of residents here is decreasing! I think we should all reach an agreement to make a priority instead of giving that power to local politicians.
M: I'd also like us to have a vote instead. On the list of issues, I'd like to create better parking near the mall.
W: I know that you live next to the shopping center. This is a good idea. I think increasing our police force should be our most important issue.
M: Safety is important, but improving the schools should be the first plan.
W: I disagree, but we should all vote on this. Secondly, we should continue stopping big companies from moving to the town.
M: We should promote small businesses instead. This creates more job opportunities.
W: Yes, and I also believe that in the future our small businesses will provide local workers with better and higher-paid jobs in Springfield.

W: I learned from a young age that the animal kingdom was an amazing place. I remember my teacher's lessons on different creatures in different environments. Mrs. Keller always spoke with enthusiasm about the different tools that each animal had developed to survive. However, what interested me most was the animals that helped one another. Certain animals form a bond that benefits both of them. For instance, there's a type of fish that attaches itself to sharks. The fish actually ride on the sharks as they go. They even eat the remaining food from the shark's meals. In return, when the shark isn't giving them a free meal, they clean the shark. The small fish eat away anything that would cause an infection in the shark. Isn't that amazing? What's even more amazing is that some animals have adapted to creating a bond with humans too. The "honey guide" is a bird that will lead humans to the insects that produce honey. The birds have learned to change their call when they find the insects. They do this specifically to warn humans in the area. Why, you ask? It's because the humans use smoke to make the insects calm down. The smoke sends the insects away from protecting the honey. This allows the birds to get the first taste of the honey as a reward. Facts like this are what make me love nature so much.

W: Our topic today is on language loss in the world.First we'll talk about what the situation is, and then we'll give some examples. Allan, do you want to begin?
M: OK. First, there is some background on the situation. There are actually different views on how many languages exist in the world today. Most experts say that there are somewhere between 6,000 and 6,800 languages still in use. Unfortunately many of these languages are in danger of disappearing. Now, it's hard to find an exact number, but some people believe that as many as half of the languages still in use could be lost before long. Here is a more specific example of how languages are being lost. An article in the magazine Nature in 2003 states that there are 46 different people around the world who are the last remaining speakers of their languages.
W: Wow. Imagine if you were the only speaker of your language left.
M: Yes. Now, one of the problems is that it's very difficult to get complete agreement on actual language numbers and that it's also hard to find agreement on the number of languages that are at the risk of disappearing.

M: The World Health Organization is worried that 1.1 billion teenagers and people in their twenties and early thirties are damaging their hearing by listening to loud music. It says nearly half the young people risk hearing loss because of the "unsafe use" of personal music players, including smart phones. Loud music in nightclubs, bars and at sporting events also increase the risk. The WHO recommends a safe limit of listening to music for just one hour a day. The WHO director for injury prevention, Dr. Etienne Krug, told the media that hearing loss is easily preventable. Dr. Krug said keeping the volume down and limiting the use of personal audio devices to less than one hour a day would save people's hearing a lot.
However, he also said, "Even an hour can be too much if the volume is too loud." Ralph Holme, a researcher, explained how loud noise can damage ears. He said, "Loud sounds damage your hearing by killing off thousands of little hair cells in the inner ear. The cells are very fragile and they get damaged and die due to loud sounds for too long." He warned, "The problem is that they don't grow back and the ear can no longer hear sounds."

M: I suppose you're right, but I don't want to make you climb on my roof. Would you just hold the ladder for me so it doesn't fall over? I think without having to worry about keeping my balance so much, I will be able to work much quicker.
W: No problem. I can do anything to make you feel better and less dangerous.

W: There is some smoke. I wonder where it is coming from. There aren't any factories over there, are there?
M: No. Maybe someone is having a barbecue.
W: It must be the world's biggest barbecue. That smoke is a hundred feet high.
M: Listen, sirens. There is your answer. There is always trouble for someone.
W: It looks like it is coming from those new houses across the park. Just imagine moving into a new house and then it burns down.
M: It may not be that. Maybe it's just a garden fire that has got out of control.
W: Oh look, here is someone who will know all about it. If there is any news to be told, Liz will have it.
M: Now don't be unkind. She's a valuable source of neighbourhood information.
W: Yes, who needs radio or newspapers when Liz is around?
M: She does tend to overstate. I think the newspapers are definitely more accurate than her.
W: But she's the kindest person I know.
M: I know. She loves looking after our children. Anyone who can tolerate them deserves a medal.
W: Hey, look. The smoke has gone. That was quick. What would you say — 20 minutes or half an hour?
M: Those firefighters don't mess about. It was 3:00 p.m. when the smoke appeared and it's only 3:40 p.m. now.

Good evening. This is Mark Vapor with the Nightly News at nine. Our top story tonight is the train crash on the Red Line. We've just gotten a report from police on the scene that fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The accident apparently occurred because of an electrical problem with the track signals. Traffic in the area is stopped, so drivers should avoid going to the Hilltop area for the next few hours until the accident is cleared up. This is also, of course, causing major delays for train riders. Check the city's website for up-to-date train times. The rest of the city looks good for a Friday night. Traffic is still backing up on the bridge heading east, but it should clear up in about an hour. Westward traffic has no delays. And now, let's take a look at the weather for this weekend. Tonight, skies will remain clear. There will be some fog early tomorrow morning, especially on the south side of the city. That should go away by 11:00, and then temperatures will quickly rise from a morning high of 76 degrees to 91 degrees by 3:00 p.m.Sunday will follow the same pattern, but the hottest it will get is 87 degrees. Enjoy your Friday night and don't forget to come back tomorrow morning with me, Mark Vapor. I'll bring you the top headlines and traffic updates every hour from seven until noon.

M: It was a bit of a disaster as my computer screen suddenly froze. Luckily, I continued it with the app on my phone.
W: Ryne scheduled his knee surgery for this Wednesday. He is expected to leave hospital next Thursday.
M: In that case, maybe we can go and see him sometime this Saturday.
W: I think we're sitting too close to the screen. My neck is starting to hurt.
M: I know. If we had got here earlier, we probably could have found seats higher up.

M: Hotel management. And I'd like to work for a hotel or a travel agency. How about you?

W: No, but my left hand is hurting a little.
M: Come, let me check your hand. Why did you learn to ride a bike?
W: I thought it would be fun. But now I know it isn't.
M: So you have decided to give up?

W: I know. Every plant comes in alive and ends up dead.
M: Well, it's not that hard to keep house plants. What did you do to care for this one?
W: That one had a big flower on it, so I put it in the sunlight.
M: This is a winter plant from north China. It doesn't do well in direct sunlight. Just move it here. Didn't you look up how to care for it when you got it?
W: No. I just thought it was pretty, and it was doing OK in the shop.
M: And this one here is all yellow. You gave it too much water.
W: I water it every day.
M: I'm afraid its root system is destroyed. Look, here's an app with plant information.

M: Today we are honoured to have Dr. Nancy with us. Doctor, thanks for coming on our show.
W: It's my pleasure.
M: Now, can we start with the question "What is creativity?"
W: Well, creativity can be viewed as a process, which usually starts with a person who's trying to find a better way of doing a task and come up with a solution.
M: Hmm, I see. Do you think the ability to be creative is inborn or not?
W: Well, no one knows yet.
M: Does creativity only appear in great people?
W: Certainly not. Creativity can also be found in daily tasks such as cooking or gardening.
M: Oh, really? Now Dr. Nancy, can you describe to us what the actual creative process is?
W: Actually, many great artists describe it as a dreamlike state during which ideas just come to them in a flash.
M: What is going on in the brain during that flash?
W: No one knows for sure, but researchers suggest that part of the brain becomes very active, linking up with ideas or thoughts in previous unknown ways.
M: I see. Thank you very much, Dr. Nancy.

Currently, there are over 1,000 seed banks located all over the world. How does the seed bank work? First, scientists from all over the world collect endangered and useful wild species, put them in a paper or cotton bag to prevent them from getting bad, and send them to the seed bank. Once the seeds arrive, they're dried and preserved in a special room. After that, X-rays confirm that the seeds are undamaged and that no insects are hidden inside. The seeds are then frozen, stored in special containers and then placed in huge freezers at 20℃ for long-term storage, which allows the seeds to be preserved for decades and reawakened when required. One of the most famous seed banks, Svalbard Global Seed Vault, now holds more than one million seed samples. It is located deep in a frozen Arctic mountain in Norway. As the Earth is facing huge challenges like climate change, these seed banks are surely significant for the future of the world's food supply.
