第一节

现在你有5秒钟的时间阅读第1小题的有关内容。

M: Hi, Fiona.

W: Dad, have you finished work yet? Thanks for the money for the concert. I will have an art course tomorrow. So could you get me some glue on your way home?

M: What do you think of this yellow sweater? My aunt sent it to me. I'm not sure if I fit into it.

W: It's your color. But I don't think it's the kind of sweater that young people wear nowadays.

M: We need to think about where to have our end-of-year party. The sports club is good, but it isn't that easy to get there unless we ask our parents for lifts. Why don't we go to the park?

W: Good idea. We can walk there. We can chat and have some snacks.

M: Do you have any good books?

W: I know you like photography but I think the book I read last month about a famous chess player is great. It's a biography, and I know you're not a fan of novels, especially about history.

W: Have you always wanted to get into this business?

M: No, not really. It grew naturally from what I used to do as a hobby — which was racing motorbikes. Dad helped me buy the garage first, then we got bikes to rent out. Now we do it quite well.

听下面一段对话,回答第6至第7两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。

W: Could you tell me some interesting places in your town?

M: Of course. In the centre of the town, we have the historic town hall. Opposite the town hall there's the library. Besides, our new art gallery often has interesting exhibitions. It's between the cinema and a big shopping mall.

W: What do you like to do in your free time?

M: Well, to the south of the town, there's a harbour, where I'd like to travel in a boat. Next to the harbour is the public swimming pool. It's an outdoor pool. But I seldom go there.

听下面一段对话,回答第8至第9两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。

W: How did you become interested in diving?

M: Well, I grew up near the beach. When I was old enough, I asked my parents if I could go diving. Their words were a great encouragement to me. So I could take a closer look at all the amazing things living underwater.

W: When did you start to dive using oxygen?

M: I learned to swim at age five. But I had to wait over seven years to start using oxygen and dive much deeper. My first lesson was a present for my tenth birthday. But even then we couldn't go down deeper than twelve meters.

听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

M: Jane, what is the documentary inside about?

W: It was made by a filmmaker from America. It explores the positive effect that music can have on patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It follows the progress of a social worker called Dan Cohen. He introduces music to care homes.

M: How interesting! Tell me more.

W: He creates a personalized playlist for the patients. His biggest success story is a man called Henry. When Henry is given headphones, he turns into a completely different person. He starts moving to the music. It's quite emotional watching his reaction.

M: How is Cohen's project now?

W: Well, one of the greatest obstacles to the plan is the cost. MP3 players aren't cheap, and providing one for every patient would be too expensive. So Cohen is trying to get around this problem by asking people to donate their old MP3 players or iPads.

M: It's a worthwhile project.

W: Now I have your schedule for the next week's observation sessions.

M: Where will I start?

W: On Monday morning you'll be in the male surgical ward, and in the female surgical ward in the afternoon. You'll be following Dr. Shay on her rounds. On Tuesday you will be with Dr. Thomas in the morning and Dr. Robertson in the afternoon. No, that can't be right...You're with Dr. Thomas in the afternoon and Dr. Robertson in the morning.

M: Can I see Dr. Kim?

W: Yes, you'll be with Dr. Kim on Thursday. She'll take you through the children's ward and our new teenage ward for 12 to 15 years old.

M: Will I see the schoolroom?

W: Maybe another time. On Wednesday morning you'll join the other students for a lecture.

M: Do you know how big my class is?

W: I'm pleased to say about one-third of students are men, which is good. Nursing used to be an almost entirely female occupation.

M: I know. My father trained as a nurse. It makes me happy to think that I'll become a nurse in the future.

The Natural History Museum in London holds an annual contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. This year, the contest had 49,000 entries from 86 countries. This year's grand prize winner was Sergey Gorshkov's picture of a Siberian tiger. Siberian tigers are endangered, but there are still about 500 in Russia's Far East. It took Mr. Gorshkov more than 11 months to get a shot of one of the tigers. It looks like the tiger is hugging the tree, but it's actually trying to leave its smell as a way of communicating with other tigers. Another endangered animal, a kind of frog, won in the Behavior: Amphibian and Reptile category. Jaime Culebras said he walked for four hours in the Andes Mountains, hoping for some good pictures. In the middle of a rainstorm, he captured this picture of the frog eating a spider. Mogens Trolle won in the Animal Portraits category with his picture of a kind of monkey. That kind of monkey is known for their big noses. They are found on the islands in Borneo. Though this animal looks completely at peace, monkeys of this kind are often hunted, which has left them endangered, too.
