 

M: Hi, Kate. Are you sure you sent Mr Brown’s travel plan to the right address?

W: Yes, I got the address directly from his company’s website. I will phone him to check it out right away.

W: What’s wrong? You seem very angry.

M: The TV I bought last week has broken. I want to exchange it for a new one. But the shop didn’t agree and said they would send a repairman. I feel like I was cheated.

M: Linda, I heard you are from Australia. I guess you must miss your hometown sometimes. And I often feel homesick for Scotland.

W: Yes, very often. After all, Singapore is too far from our home countries.

W: I’ll have an important meeting in the morning. After that, I have to continue my research.

M: Both sound not interesting!

W: Yes, especially the research. But it needs to be finished this week.

W: I’ve only stayed here for 3 nights. Why should I pay for 4 nights?

M: I’m sorry, Miss. Checkout is at 14:00 every day. You’re checking out after that, so we have no choice but to charge you for another day.

W: Do you get along with this little one well?

M: Yeah, pretty well. He rarely barks loudly and we have a walk together every night. Anyway, he’s a good companion.

W: Great. I bet he likes his new home. What does he usually eat?

M: Besides the special food I bought him, he drinks milk every day. And he has what we eat sometimes, like fish and bread. Oh, right, he had pancakes this morning. When I had pancakes, he stared at me, so I shared some with him.

W: No wonder he’s grown bigger; you’re a really considerate owner.

M: Good morning, Nora. I didn’t expect to meet you here. What do you come for?

W: Good morning, Mike. My dad is coming to visit me this Friday, but I can’t go to pick him up then. I’ll have an appointment which cannot be missed or delayed. Could you help me out?

M: Absolutely. But you should describe your father to me first.

W: Well, he is a sixty-year-old man of average build, with no beard. His hair is grey, but not thick. I’ll give you his number later.

M: Great. Should I meet him at the airport?

W: No, he will come by rail, which is always his first choice, and arrive at the Central Railway Station. It’s a bit further. You could drive my car that day.

M: OK.

W: I think that car drives really well and is a good deal.

M: Yeah, it seems to be suitable for you. But you’d better have a professional take a look at it just to be sure.

W: My friend Jack is expert at cars and he came and looked at it for me earlier this morning.

M: It’s smart of you to think ahead, honey. Have you and the seller agreed a price?

W: Yes, he is willing to accept the price that I offered him. And I want to pay in cash for this car. Is that OK?

M: Sure. Since you earn the money by yourself, you can decide how to spend it. Both your mother and I would support you.

W: Thanks. Can you go with me to make the payment and drive my car home? I can’t wait to show it to Mom.

M: OK. Let’s go now. I’m sure she will love it too.

W: Nice to meet you, Mr Smith. Do you mind answering a few questions about your life?

M: Of course not. Go ahead!

W: Could you tell us about your daily routine when you’re not performing?

M: Sure. I get up early, and then I have breakfast. After that, I go to the gym for some exercise like running, indoor cycling and push-ups.

W: Which exercise is your favorite?

M: It’s hard to say. I spend most time on cycling, and maybe it’s my favorite. But I also like running very much.

W: I see. They’re both good options. Then how do you spend your afternoon?

M: Usually I have lunch late. Then I may read a book or play a video game to relax. Sometimes, I do voluntary work. There is a volunteer center near my home.

W: That’s meaningful. And what do you like to do before going to bed?

M: Learning dialogue. Recently, I’m learning dialogue for a new film called "Man About Town". Writing is also part of evening activities. I write some lines every day. And I hope to write a novel one day.

W: Wow! That’s really something! I’m really looking forward to it. Well, thank you for taking some time off your busy schedule to come to our program today.

M: It’s my pleasure.

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child who learns to talk doesn’t learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He compares a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, a child learns to walk, run, climb, ride a bike, and play games. He compares his own performance with what more skilled people do. But in school we never give a child a chance to find mistakes. We do it all for him. We act as if he would never notice a mistake unless it is pointed out. Soon he becomes dependent on others. We should let him do things himself — figure out what a word says or work out the answer to a problem, whether this is a good way or not. If right answers are needed, as in math or science, give him the answer book and let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such work? Our job should be to help children when they tell us that they can’t find a way to get the right answer.
