M: I chose it because I like the natural sciences. Are you studying history?

W: No, though I wish I could. My mother wants me to become a doctor one day, so I’m learning medicine.

M: Would you mind me inviting some friends to dinner at home this Saturday evening?

W: Not at all. But shall we go to the supermarket and get everything ready this afternoon?

M: OK. I’ll drive the car.

W: Sir, here is your roast beef.

M: Hmm, I am afraid you have made a mistake. It’s not the dish I ordered.

W: Let me see. I am sorry. It’s for Table 11.

M: It doesn’t matter.

M: Excuse me, do you have any direct flight to Tokyo?

W: Sorry, we don’t.  Would you like to change your flight at Chicago or Los Angeles?

M: Well. I’d like to choose the one stopping at Chicago.

W: Yes. It was so crowded. I’m worn-out. Let’s find our seats.

M: Is your seat near the window?

W: Let me see…Yes, one window seat.

M: Can I exchange my seat with you? I am a nature and scenery lover. And the window gives a view of the outside.

W: That’s fine. I’d like the seat near the passage anyway. It’s easier to get in and out.

W: Hello, this is International Youth Hotel. How can I help you?

M: I want to know whether you still have any vacancies.

W: Well, let me check first. Er, there are just a few single rooms, two double rooms and one business suite available. Would you like to make a reservation now?

M: Yes, please. I need three single rooms for next Monday. Do you take credit cards?

W: Yes, we accept cash, traveler’s checks and all major credit cards.

M: And how about Internet access? Is it available?

W: Unfortunately not.

M: That’s OK. Is breakfast included?

W: Yes, and parking is available.

M: Fantastic. Thank you very much.

M: Hi, Sue, how is your study in China?

W: Hi, Frank. It’s fine. What about yours?

W: Why? Don’t you enjoy it?

M: I like it. But I think it’s time to step into the real world, find a job, and experience the social life.

W: Do you have some plans?

M: Well, first I want to work as an engineer. And then, I want to set up a charity to help children left behind by their parents who go to big cities to seek their fortune.

W: It sounds good. I just began the course on art this term and have another two terms to go before I graduate.

M: Good for you. You will make it as you always do. Time to go. Bye.

W: Bye!

W: Hey, Lucas. How was your trip to Paris?

M: It was wonderful, but I was so tired.

W: Did you go to the Eiffel Tower?

M: Yes, that was the first thing we did. We went all the way to the top. There were visitors from all over the world taking photos there.

W: What else did you visit?

M: Art galleries, museums, statues, fountains, palaces…All these places are worth visiting.

W: You must have had a great time.

M: Yes. In the beginning, we were all excited and had lots of fun. However, on the third day of traveling in the city, I had a stomachache. I think I might have eaten something bad.

W: You need to be careful with what you eat when you are abroad. Sometimes new food might disagree with you.

M: On the fourth day, we went to taste French food. That was really fantastic! And no stomach problems.

W: That is great. I always hear people say French food is wonderful.

M: You should try it some day.

People should listen to music for no more than one hour a day to protect their hearing, the World Health Organization suggests. It says 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of permanently damaging their hearing by listening to music "too much, too loudly". WHO figures show 43 million people aged 12—35 have hearing loss and the number is increasing. In that age group, the WHO says, half of people in high-and middle-income countries are exposed to unsafe sound from personal audio devices. Meanwhile, 40% are exposed to damaging levels of sound in clubs and bars.

Compared with more noticeable eyesight loss, hearing loss is largely ignored. That’s not because sometimes hearing loss is temporary and can be cured, but because those who suffer from it can still carry out daily communication.

To protect people from unsafe sound levels, the WHO recommends keeping the sound level to 60 percent of the maximum. For people trying to avoid the noise during plane or train journeys, it says noise-cancelling headphones are good choices. They allow music to be heard clearly at a lower and safer level. And the WHO adds that earplugs should be worn in noisy places and advises taking "listening breaks".
