W: OK, I'll just follow you since we live close to each other.

W: My place is even smaller. What about on a friend's rooftop?
M: Jenny's rooftop apartment would be perfect!

W: You must have faced a lot of competition in the family.
M: You're absolutely right. As we grew into teenagers, our mutual competitiveness drove us to get good grades. And all of us ended up going to very good universities.
W: What do you think of having so many siblings now?
M: Now I really appreciate this. My kids have many cousins and I've many nieces and nephews. They bring us great joy. So do you have any siblings?

W: No. She could see clearly, but she couldn't hear well. The woman was talking over the cellphone loudly. But it seemed that she didn't know what the other person was saying. So I went over and offered to help.
M: Was it her husband who was on the cellphone with her?
W: Yes. He was waiting for her just outside the airport but she couldn't hear him clearly and couldn't find him. So I talked to her husband for a minute and took her to where her husband was waiting for her.
M: Wow, I'm proud of you, my girl. I guess you must be hungry after such a long business trip?
W: Yeah.
M: How about going to eat first? Your mom says there is a restaurant near here serving nice steaks.

M: So did you study art at college?
W: Right. But I gave up my job as a painter when my daughter was born. I thought about teaching art part-time, but instead, I started making dolls for my daughter. I love acting, so I often create plays for the dolls. I once used the dolls to give a show at my daughter's party. The children loved it. As a result, other parents asked me to do the show at their children's parties.
M: It must be a lot of work for you.
W: Yes, but I loved it. Luckily my neighbour Lena was willing to perform with me. Her husband recorded the music to go with the shows.
M: Have you ever had any problems?
W: Only once. I wrote a story about a lion. The children were afraid of the lion and cried. I was worried the parents might complain. But they just laughed about it. After that, whenever I've invented a new story, I will show it to my daughter. She always tells me exactly what she thinks of it.

M: Home security is becoming one of the fastest growing technology markets. Previously, home owners had to get expensive alarms. These systems could not be relied upon, and would even be set off if there was a power cut. Nowadays, with advancements in technology, it is easy to add extra protection to your home at affordable prices. Some companies have released doorbells that also have cameras. The main selling point of these devices is that when someone rings your doorbell, you can choose to answer via your cellphone, even if you're not in the house. This can drive away thieves as they believe the house is occupied. They also takes photos of people in your house. Some cameras come with face recognition software so that if it doesn't recognize someone, it will inform you or the authorities. So-called "smart homes" allow you to control and monitor your home from your smart phone or tablet. You are able to turn the lights on and off while in another country, making it appear occupied. You can also monitor smart security cameras that can sit in your home, or outside on your walls. These also allow you to monitor your pets and children, keeping your loved ones under your watchful eyes.

W: Well, I like to take notes. But if the topic is difficult, I often record the whole thing. In that way, I can listen to the lecture all over again and take really good notes.
W: Hi, Thomas. This is Katie. I found your notebook in the library. Please come to get it back in the classroom. Or I just leave it in the teachers' office in Room 201, if you don't have time now.
M: Oh. That's great, Katie! I have been looking for it all day long. I'll get it tomorrow morning.

The best place to find a good variety of local artworks such as paintings and handmade jewellery is Richmond. The only trouble is that there aren't any places to eat. Luckily, there are some great restaurants and cafés in Rosemount 15 minutes by bike away from it. And Sun Valley, which is a ten-minute walk from Richmond is also famous for its local foods.

M: In the age of mobile payment, what we really need to survive is a smartphone. But one company in the US is going to make your traditional wallets cool again, by bringing them into the digital age.
Armenian firm Volterman's Smart Wallet takes security to a new level. It's fitted with different technology. In a smart wallet, there is an alarm, a GPS tracker, and even a camera. If your phone and wallet become separated, the alarm will warn you so that you don't leave it behind. And if your wallet is lost or stolen, the GPS tracker can help you reach it.
But perhaps the most unusual feature of the Volterman Smart Wallet is the built-in front\|facing camera. "If someone dares to open your wallet without your permission, the little camera will take a picture and send it to your mobile phone," the founder said. Once your wallet is stolen, you will find it easily by receiving the picture of the thief.
The Volterman is really the world's most powerful smart wallet. It's also lightweight and thin, making it perfect for travel. No more international roaming charges(收费). Also, it works wirelessly. The high-tech wallet comes in three models, with the cheapest cost expected to be $169.

Since it was a Saturday, I didn't need to go to school. I had just finished my homework and was watching TV with my dad while my mother was cooking lunch. Suddenly, the table and chairs started shaking. We didn't know it was an earthquake and continued watching TV. But about two minutes later, it started to shake harder and we realized it was an earthquake. Dad and I hid under the table while Mom went to hide under a bed. The photos were falling down from the walls. When the earthquake finally stopped, my parents asked me to run with them to the playground at our school. When we got there, most of our neighbors had been there. We feared the building would fall, so we just stayed on the playground far away from buildings and cars and spent the night there. We experienced several aftershocks during that night. Luckily, no one died in that earthquake and only a few people got injured.

W: He creates a personalized playlist for the patients. His biggest success story is a man called Henry. When Henry is given headphones, he turns into a completely different person. He starts moving to the music. It's quite emotional watching his reaction.
M: How is Cohen's project now?
W: Well, one of the greatest obstacles to the plan is the cost. MP3 players aren't cheap, and providing one for every patient would be too expensive. So Cohen is trying to get around this problem by asking people to donate their old MP3 players or iPads.

The Natural History Museum in London holds an annual contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. This year, the contest had 49,000 entries from 86 countries. This year's grand prize winner was Sergey Gorshkov's picture of a Siberian tiger. Siberian tigers are endangered, but there are still about 500 in Russia's Far East. It took Mr. Gorshkov more than 11 months to get a shot of one of the tigers. It looks like the tiger is hugging the tree, but it's actually trying to leave its smell as a way of communicating with other tigers. Another endangered animal, a kind of frog, won in the Behavior: Amphibian and Reptile category. Jaime Culebras said he walked for four hours in the Andes Mountains, hoping for some good pictures. In the middle of a rainstorm, he captured this picture of the frog eating a spider. Mogens Trolle won in the Animal Portraits category with his picture of a kind of monkey. That kind of monkey is known for their big noses. They are found on the islands in Borneo. Though this animal looks completely at peace, monkeys of this kind are often hunted, which has left them endangered, too.

M: Oh, that's too bad. Where can you park around here?
W: There is a square in front of us. We can park the car there.
M: Is there a shop?
W: I'm not sure. You know, I'm not familiar with the city either.
M: Just stop here for a moment. The police will not notice.
W: No, that's too risky.
M: All right. Let's go to the square to have a look.

M: It's really a long story. I went to Britain for my further study and two years later I went back to China. I worked as an English teacher at a language training school for a short while and then settled in Shanghai.
W: That's great. What are you doing at the moment?
M: I intend to find a job in advertising. Do you have a good place to recommend?
W: Oh, yes. But perhaps we can chat about that while dining.
M: That's a good idea. Let's find a table and get seated.

A new 2,400-square-meter museum is set to open on New York State's Liberty Island next year. The museum celebrates the world-famous Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It officially opened to the public in October 1886. From 1892 to 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed by the Statue of Liberty as their ships sailed to nearby Ellis Island. Many immigrants later traveled to Liberty Island and saw the statue up close. Now, a new museum to honor "Lady Liberty" is on the way.
About 4.5 million tourists visit Liberty Island every year. But only about 20 percent are able to go inside the Statue of Liberty because of limited space. The new museum will permit every visitor to know what the inside is like. Entering the building, visitors will experience a virtual look inside the head of Lady Liberty. They also have a chance to see the workplace of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who created the statue. Museum visitors also will see the 1,600-kilogram torch that lit up New York Harbor for nearly 100 years. On the top of the Statue of Liberty Museum, visitors can have a good look at New York's Lower Manhattan area.

M: Do you want to go with me to the gym tomorrow morning? My trainer said she would give you a free class.
W: I would love to. Just remind me to go to my dentist appointment in the afternoon.
M: How long did it take you to finish your science project? I have been thinking about it all weekend, and I can't come up with anything worth making! I don't know what to do.
W: Don't worry,Billy. It took me a couple of months to get my science project worked out when I was your age. It'll come to you. Why don't you try going to the museum?
W: It's so quiet here. And look at all those stars!
M: I know. This is why I like coming up here. It's nice to get out of the city once in a while, and I must admit that I love sleeping outdoors like this.
M: You have one more month here before you get transferred to the Chicago office.
W: Don't worry. I fully intend to use this time to clean up the office and organize all the files before I leave.

M: Did you check the bathroom? Maybe it's in your make-up bag. You could fit a house in that thing.
W: Why would I put it there,Tim? That's just silly. It probably fell under the desk.
M: If I check the bathroom and it's there, you will owe me a drink! That'll be the first thing we do when we get to the airport.

M: Good idea. I can use my new video camera — it's waterproof.
W: Wow,where did you get that?
M: I got it in New York a week ago. It's made by a company called GoPro. They specialize in making HD video cameras for outdoor sports. The bodies of their cameras are designed to be extra strong. The camera can handle being dropped, and I can use it underwater up to 60 meters deep.
W: And it's so small and lightweight. How much did it cost?
M: Well,I could have gotten the older model for $200. But I bought the latest version for $300, because it's lighter and has better picture quality. I also spent an extra$50 for all extra battery pack.
W: Well, let's go so you can use it!

M: Yes! That needs to be a huge success if we expect anything from our summer line to be ready anytime soon.
W: I'll call the models this weekend and remind them of the fitting next week. Hopefully, they can be helpful for the donations for the event.
M: I would like to think so. Isn't that what this business is all about — making people look good and being surrounded by the people that look the best?
W: I guess so,sir. I'd like to think that our market is more than just good-looking people though.

听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
Nothing in this world can be achieved without effort. Mozart wasn't born to be a composer. He practiced the piano from the age of three and began composing by the age of five. His father, who was also his teacher, was very strict with the boy. Jimi Hendrix used to walk around his house with a guitar and play it up to eight hours a day. As a child,Jimi used to listen to his father's blues records alone with a broom, pretending to play it like a guitar.
Neither of them had their gift just been given to them at birth. They had to work hard and discoverd that they had a gift. And they didn't just make do with what they had after that. They kept at it. Hendrix didn't even know how to read music, so he learned everything through listening.
Another example is Albert Einstein, the father of modern physics. He was told that he would never be a success at anything.
No one wanted to hire him after he graduated from college. But he believed in himself, and he persevered with his studies on his own.
Now,I'm not trying to say that everyone can be a Mozart or an Einstein if they just put in a lot of time doing something. But with effort and passion, one can achieve a great deal. Without those things, you're not going to achieve much. Luck comes to those who prepare for it. If you do something you love, don't let little bumps along the road stop you.

Text 10
Hello, everyone. Today I'll talk about how to improve your pronunciation. Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers followed by grammar in effective spoken English. However, most people don't regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They are more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So it's important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts. By experts, I mean those who are less likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sound strange — strange because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check a dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for difficult-to-pronounce words and names and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read aloud. Now you've got the correct pronunciations of the words, it's time to practice reading them every day.
