M: Listen! The sound made by your computer is very strange. Maybe you should contact the repair shop and have it checked.

W: You're right. I know its number and I'll do that right away.  

 

M: Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to Sheraton Hotel from here on foot?

W: Sure. It's not far. Just walk along Main Street. Turn right at the bank. It is on your right, near a library.

 

M: The new dance can be seen in many places ranging from parks to public squares. It seems interesting. Do you want to have a try?

W: Believe it or not, it is the last thing I want to do.  

 

W: Will Professor Black be able to see me at 9:30 or 11:00 tomorrow morning?

M: I'm sorry, but he won't be available the whole morning. How about 1 o'clock in the afternoon?  

 

W: My dog always makes trouble for me. He just loves digging up flowers in my neighbor's garden.

M: Mine too！So I keep him in the house all the time except when I walk him in the park.

M: Good morning! City Transport Service Company.

W: Good morning. I'd like to reserve a taxi to the airport on Saturday morning please.

M: OK, Madam. Where should we pick you up?

W: I'm at Holiday Inn near the train station on Union Street.

M: I've noted that down. Then which airport will you go to and when do you want to leave?

W: The Central Airport. I'll catch the flight there to Toronto. And I'm going to leave at seven in the morning.

M: Right. We'll pick you up at your hotel then.

In the summer months, people often get together with family members who live far away. If you listen attentively when people talk with family members, you might hear some interesting expressions. Like many idioms, it is often hard to understand these expressions simply by knowing the meaning of individual words and the grammar of the sentence. For example, while watching television with your family in a crowded room, you might hear "Your father was not a glass blower." Of course, it is impossible for a person to be made of glass. Actually that expression means you are blocking the view of someone else, and they want you to move. A similar expression is "You make a better door than a window." This means "Please move out of the way." When a child starts to act just like his parent, you might hear " He's a chip off the old block." This suggests the image of an artist making a statue of someone from a block of stone. It can mean that the child is made of the same material as his parent. In a similar way, people may think that a child's behavior can show how the child will act when he or she grows up. To express this idea, people may use the phrase "The child is father to the man."
