W: What do you think of the movie, Ted?
M: I have never seen a movie like that before. I should have just read a book instead.
Text 2
W: Mike, since you just bought a new computer, could you sell me your old one?
M: Sorry, I promised my brother I'd give it to him.
Text 3
M: Uncle Wang gave me the sweets.
W: Give them to me, please. They're bad for your teeth. I don't want to hear you crying when your teeth start hurting again.
Text 4
W: Could you pass me an apple?
M: Sorry, but there are only two pears and one banana left.
Text 5
W: Where is your father?
M: He was in his study just now. But he has gone to the garage.
Text 6
W: Hello. Can I talk to David?
M: I'm sorry. David is out to have lunch right now, and I'm his colleague.
W: Okay, I'm his wife. Could you tell him to call me back when he returns?
M: Sure. Does he know how to contact you?
W: Oh, thanks. Please tell him to call my cellphone number.
M: OK, I will.
W: Thank you very much.
M: My pleasure.
Text 7
M: I heard there was an earthquake in the city yesterday. Really?
W: Yes. I watched the news on TV.
M: Were there any deaths?
W: Yes, it was reported that about 20 people were killed, including 4 children. And a lot of people lost their homes.
M: We must do something to help them.
W: Our class is going to put on some performances to collect money for them.
M: What a great idea! I'll join you.
Text 8
M: Hi, nice to see you again, Amy!
W: Hi, Phil! I haven't seen you for quite a long time. What are you doing these days?
M: I'm taking a country music course.
W: Oh, really? How interesting! What are you learning from the course?
M: A lot of things, you know, such as the history of country music, singing and how to play the guitar.
W: That's great. Well, talking about country music reminds me of a famous singer, John Denver. Have you ever heard of him?
M: Sure. His song Take Me Home, Country Roads is popular both in the USA and in China.
W: Yes, that's true. Did you hear the bad news about him?
M: What was it?
W: He had an accident while flying his plane alone, and he was killed.
M: That's a big loss for country music.
Text 9
M: Can I help you?
W: Yes. I'm looking for a pair of jeans. By the way, are these jeans on sale? I like this style.
M: No, they are new arrivals. They are very popular this year. I think this green pair is a good fit for you. Why not try them on? The dressing room is right there in the corner.
W: The price is a bit high. The black ones are the same style as the green ones. Why are the prices different?
M: They are made of different materials, and the dark-colored jeans are on sale now. Actually, both of them are of high quality. But the green ones are more popular. It's up to you.
W: Well, I'll take the black pair.
M: Do you want to try them on?
W: No, it's fine. Thanks.
M: Is that everything?
W: Yes, that's all.
M: Cash or credit card?
W: I'll pay in cash.
Text 10
Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have totally different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly and peaceful environment.
Each summer, 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build little wooden houses. The adults teach them these skills.
There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours, some of the teenagers learn photography or drawing. Others just sit around and talk with the adults. Each teenager can choose his own way to spend his free time.
When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together.
