M: Hello. I have an appointment with Dr. Jones at nine o'clock this morning, but I'm afraid I'll have to arrive about fifteen minutes late.

W: That's all right, Mr. Davis. Dr. Jones doesn't have another appointment until ten o'clock.

M: I'm so tired and thirsty. When are we going to get to the mall? If only you had driven a bit faster...

W: Can you please shut up? I can't concentrate with your constant talking.

W: Morning, Jack. Oh, what's wrong with you? You look so pale.

M: I stayed all night to finish the new project our boss ordered.

W: My goodness. It needs at least two days!

W: That chocolate cake looks delicious. Aren't you going to have some with me?

M: Well, the meal we just had was a huge one and I was sort of watching my calorie intake, but what the heck, birthday only comes once a year.

M: What's wrong, Rachel? You aren't looking like yourself!

W: My mum's got a job in Liverpool! I've finally made friends after years of loneliness here. Now we go off again. Why can't my mum have a steady job?

W: Have you found a roommate?

M: Yes, I have. The guy is a teacher who has just graduated.

W: How do you like living with a roommate?

M: It's all right. At least, there is someone who shares the rent with me.

W: How about your roommate?

M: He is nice but a little bit shy. I think he hasn't adapted to living with a stranger.

W: He may need a period of time to adapt to his new environment.

M: I think so.

W: What are you going to do?

M: I'm going to the property company. The sink is clogged these days.

W: I think you should talk to the landlord.

M: I did, but he is on a business trip.

W: Well, good luck.

W: You haven't forgotten Sylvia's party tonight, have you?

M: Of course not. There is plenty of time.

W: No, there isn't. The invitation says drinks are at 7: 00, and it's 6: 30 now.

M: Relax. I have told Sylvia we won't be there for drinks. Dinner won't start before 8: 30 and we only need to arrive half an hour before that, so there is no hurry.

W:  I know, but we have to pick up our children from your parents' house on the way.

M: Yeah, even so, there is no need to start right away.

W: Excuse me.  I'm from the 21st Century. Could I please ask you a few questions?

M: Sure. What would you like to know?

W: Well, to begin with, would you mind telling me how much pocket money you receive every month?

M: On average, I get something about three hundred from my parents.

W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?

M: Well, I spend it on many different things. I go to see films every week, and that costs much of my pocket money. Sometimes I buy CDs and collect cards and I also buy books.

W: Do you get extra money from any other sources?

M: Yes, but only a little.  That comes from doing a little housework for my uncle twice every week for 15 yuan each time. By the way, I live at my uncle's house, but I don't need to pay for the housing or meals, so I'm saving.

M: Lily, where do you like to eat?

W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It's very near the city center. At lunch it's full of office workers, so I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don't have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What's your favorite restaurant?

M: Well, it's just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. A couple of waitresses wear ugly pink uniforms. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. There are some truck drivers sitting at the counter drinking coffee and eating sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don't think that's true.

W: You don't need millions to be happy. In fact, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough at the Happiness Research Institute in Australia. The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying for lessons on how to feel great. Experts say that only 15 percent of happiness comes from income and other financial factors. As much as 85 percent comes from things such as attitudes, life control and relationships. Most of us are significantly wealthier financially than our parents, but happiness levels haven't changed to reflect that. Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness. Part of the reason why we are richer but not happier is that we compare ourselves to people better off materially. So if you want to be happy, there's a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less wealthy than you — poorer, with a smaller house and car. The Happiness Research Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappy factors by focusing on "more than just your bank account".
