M: Of course not. I'm feeling a bit hungry anyway. I just want to go out for something to eat.
W: How much are the tickets for the match?
M: The cheapest ticket is £21 and the second one is £24.
W: That's not bad. Last time I paid £28. We won't save much if we get two cheaper tickets.
M: That's true. Let's go for the more expensive one then.
W: Hello? David? You finally turned your cellphone on. I locked my keys in the car. Can you wait about an hour? I called the repairman and he's on his way.
M: Don't worry, then. I'll just take a taxi.
W: I’m really sorry.
M: Pardon me, would it be possible to get a table by the window? My co-workers and I are celebrating a colleague's promotion, and we'd like the nicest view.
W: Let me check the reservation book to make sure that the table is free.
M: OK.
M: We're moving very slowly again now. I'm going to miss my meeting if we don't speed up soon.
W: Yes, we seem to be late most days at the moment.

W: Good morning, Philippa. When would you be available for work? Days? Evenings?
M: Well, days would be difficult, as I have classes then. I was thinking maybe a couple of evenings a week, or maybe three. But no more than that.
W: OK. Philippa, why are you interested in working for us?
M: Well, I major in Social Care Studies. I'm hoping to apply for a job in social care when I graduate, and this would give me some work experience in this field.
W: Great. And what makes you suitable for this kind of work, do you think?
M: Well, I have very good communication skills. That's my strong point, I think. And I'm a good listener. Sometimes you can help by just listening, you know.
W: I agree. Hmm, right. What I'd like to do, if it's OK with you, is fix an appointment so we can meet and talk about this more. It wouldn't be anything formal, not an interview or anything like that. Er, how are you fixed for Tuesday, September 9th at 4:30?
M: Ah, I'm sorry. I have a lesson then. Would Wednesday be possible?

W: This summer I took part in a really interesting project. It's called One-Day Clean-up and its aim is to clear the rubbish in the environment.I heard about its work from my neighbors who used to take part some years ago. I thought it would be fun and persuaded a couple of my cousins to come along with me. But it wouldn't matter if you took part on your own. You'd soon make friends with other people there. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were a very international group in my team. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find at the seaside. It has all made me realize how important it is for everyone to be aware of the environment. I'm determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It'll be worth it if we can make our sea safer for all those beautiful sea animals. So, if you'd like to take part in this project with me next year, it'll be on January 11th. The focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. There'll be a day later in the year on cleaning up woodlands.

W: When did girls start going to school, then?
M: After 1870, all children between the ages of five and ten had to go to school. But they used to have separate playgrounds for boys and girls.
W: Really? What about the classrooms? What were they like?
M: Very boring, I think. They didn't use to have any posters or anything on the walls, and the windows used to be really high up so the children couldn't see outside.
W: Sounds awful! What about the teachers?
M: Well, the teachers were mostly single women. After women got married, they would stop teaching. Not many men taught either because the pay was very low.
W: So, you wouldn't have been a teacher in those days, Dad?
M: No. They didn't teach geography in those days, anyway.
W: What subjects did they teach?
M: Mostly reading, writing, and math.
W: What time did they start school?
M: School used to start at 9 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. But they had a two-hour lunch break because everyone used to walk home for lunch.

She was born on a farm in New York, one of five boys and five girls. At 12, she left home and worked as a housekeeper until she married Thomas Salmon Moses at 27. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York. Grandma Moses began to paint using oils in her old age because she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market, and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought every painting she painted. Three of those pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940, she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death, she produced some 1, 600 pictures.

The driver of the bus was trying to avoid hitting a car that passed a red light, and the bus overturned with 37 students inside. The driver suffered minor injuries to the face, and two students broke their arms. Roger Peterson, headmaster of Maxwell High School, said that the driver was not at fault. His reaction helped prevent serious injuries. As soon as the bus overturned, the driver opened the door using the emergency handle and helped the students get off one by one. He informed the police that the students were injured.According to John Pineda who witnessed the accident, the school bus almost hit the car. "The bus wasn't going that fast, but the other car was. If the bus had hit the car, those people inside would surely have been seriously injured, or worse," Pineda said. Pineda also said that the driver of the school bus turned left. If he were to have made a right, rather than a left, he would have surely hit people that were crossing the street.

But I started my business when I saw a chance to make money from sports shoes in the early 1980s. The business kept growing. I had 120 shops in 1990, and just before I sold the business in 1998, the figure had grown to 250. I made £268 million from the sale. I thought I had made all the money I would need. I decided to enjoy myself. I spent lots of money on race cars and beautiful houses but after a while, I was bored and wanted to work again. I visited Africa for the first time in 2002 and saw I could offer business advice to farmers who were in difficulty. About five years ago, I started lending small amounts of money to farmers and other people all over the world who had nothing but wanted to start their own business. Recently, I've been taking part in some projects. We've been able to build new schools and set up training programs that teach children about business. The first of these projects to be completed was a hospital in a small town in Malawi this spring.

W: What? Is he okay?
M: Well, lucky for him, no broken arms or legs. Only a small injury to his head.
W: I've always told him not to drive so fast. He is so impatient. Did he try to run a red light again this time?
M: Not really. He said he was reading a text on his cellphone, and when he saw the truck, it was already too late for him to respond.
W: He'll have enough time to respond to police questions. Anyway, let's just go through the sales report without him.

M: Good. Do I have to register?
W: No, but a student ID card is a must.
M: Okay. Will there be enough room for students to move around freely? I mean, I wouldn't want to work out in a jammed place.
W: Don't worry. The classes take place at the Elizabeth Hall. It can accommodate up to 500 students. But the average turnout is only around 100. Oh, the student union has invited some professional coaches to provide guidance this month. You wouldn't want to miss it.

W: What? They are horrible! Bugs always make my hair stand on end! Helpful? How?
M: Well, do you know what pollen is?
W: You mean the fine powder produced by flowers? Yeah. It fertilizes other flowers of the same species so that they produce seeds. But how does that have anything to do with bugs?
M: Because insects play a crucial part in the transfer of pollen among flowers, and three-quarters of our crops in the UK depend on this.
W: Okay, but...It has jumped on my foot!

M: Hello, I'm Bryan Lynn. Now you're listening to the English learning program, Words and Their Stories. Today we are going to talk about potatoes.Potatoes have been around for a very long time. In the food magazine Bon Appétit, Sam Dean writes about the beginnings of the potato. He explains that the common white potato came from Peru at least 7,000 years ago. These days, most countries use a type of potato in their cooking. For people who like meat, you have not lived until you have eaten a baked potato covered with melted cheese and crispy bacon. And speaking of meat on top of potatoes, we do have an expression related to it: meat-and-potatoes. If someone is a meat-and-potatoes kind of person, they prefer simple life. They are not interested in fancy goods, complex emotions or things alike.Okay, as you know, a cooked potato can stay hot for a long time, and therefore comes the expression "hot potatoes". When you describe something as a "hot potato", you're saying it's difficult to deal with and you want to get rid of it as soon as possible, because it's "too hot to hold". We also have "small potatoes", which means unimportant people or things. But, we do not say "big potatoes" for important ones. English is funny that way! That's today's Words and Their Stories. Have a nice day!

W: Why don't we pay for lessons? I saw an advertisement for a dog-training place in the local paper. That seems like the best answer.

M: Did you know that more than three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day and an estimated 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty making $1.25 or less daily? Extreme poverty is a global issue, but different poverty levels make it difficult to compare them. For example, someone living in America earning $5 an hour may be a lot poorer than someone earning $1 an hour in Africa. The World Bank has been monitoring the poverty line since it was created. It estimates that in 1990, 36% of the world's population was below the poverty line. However, two decades later, this number had been reduced to 18%. By 2030, it wants this number to be at 3%. Although this may seem like an impossible task, it is going to focus on fast income growth for the bottom 40%. It also wants to see a rise in shared prosperity. One idea that is gaining popularity is the idea of a basic income, with organizations such as the Omidyar Network supporting it. This would mean everyone got paid, regardless of whether they have a job or not. Finland ran a trial for two years with great success, and after the COVID-19, many countries including Spain and Scotland will be seriously considering introducing one. Senior officials of the United Nations have also voiced their support, and urged other countries to take it as a solution to many world issues.

When I was a little boy, my grandfather told me that our family came to America from Spain. His favorite thing to talk about was a traditional event called "Human Towers". It's a physical challenge that's done during the annual festivals around Barcelona. The goal of the event is to build up layers of people to try to make a high tower. The people who are on the bottom are often the largest, so that they can hold everyone else. Participants stand on each other's shoulders, so it's important to think about who goes on each level. Men, women and kids all participate in building the tower, so there are many different ways to build. The event involves everyone in the area, too. Anyone who is not involved in building the tower has an important job, though. The audience all crowd around the tower and hold up their hands to try to break the fall of any person who loses their balance. This stops anyone in the tower from getting hurt. Traditionally, the human tower has four people on each level. The world record for the largest human tower had 10 levels, but the record is not why people do it. The point is to bring the community together.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Ernest Hemingway's most lasting works and may become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man and the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snows of Kilimanjaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that leaves the deepest impression on me. This novel mainly writes about one old man alone in the sea who fishes. He caught one big fish. But he met a shark on the way home. The old man used all his skills to fight with the shark. At last, the fish he caught was eaten up by the shark, but he never gave up. This book shows us that the confidence is just like the automobile motor, and is power which makes the person go forward.

W: I like your professional approach. In the kitchen, we have a coffee station. Have you made lattes before?
M: I'm familiar with making these drinks. Where's the food preparation area?
W: Good, that will save us some time. The food preparation area is over there. We have some of the best chefs in the city.
M: Very impressive. How about tableware?
W: All the plates, bowls, and glasses are on these shelves.
M: I hope you can show me more as we start working. I'm excited to get started.
W: It's great to have another motivated waiter around. On a good night, we can make up to $200 per night.
M: Seriously? I thought it'd be half of that. I only made $80 per night in hotels.
W: Welcome to New York. The restaurant staff here make great tips, but only if the servers are good enough!

M:We all like to hear of new inventions that will make our lives easier or healthier. However, many great inventions have come about by accident. Perhaps the greatest example of this is penicillin, a drug which has saved millions of lives. The British scientist Sir Alexander Fleming was searching for a "wonder drug" that could cure diseases. However, it wasn't until he threw away his experiments that he found what he was looking for. He noticed that a dish he had rejected contained something that could kill certain bacteria. He turned the substance into penicillin. On a lighter note, chocolate chip cookies were also a happy accident. The cook Ruth Graves Wakefield was trying to make regular chocolate biscuits but ran out of bakers' chocolate. As an alternative, she broke sweet chocolate into small pieces and added them to the mixture, thinking they would melt. They didn't, but they became delicious biscuits. Potato crisps were also an accident. The chef George Crum made a plate of fried potatoes for a customer, who sent them back many times, asking them to be more fried and thinner. Crum lost his temper, sliced the potatoes very thin, and fried them for a long time. To the chef's surprise, the customer loved them and wanted more.
