M: Perhaps I'll find a job as an instructor in a gym. You know, I have a part-time job in a local gym, training people to work out. I kind of like it. Now what about you?

W: Well, I'm thinking of going on with my studies. My dream is to become a teacher, and I need a related degree for it.

M: Then which university would you like to go to?

W: I haven't made up my mind yet.

M: Do you have any idea what you are going to teach?

W: I can't tell for sure now. Perhaps art or singing and dancing. You know, I always like being with young students. That way, I'll always feel young myself.

M: That sounds quite similar to what I'd like to do. If being with young people makes you feel young, then helping people build up their physical strength will keep me strong and healthy.

W: Yes, I agree with you. Hope our dreams will come true.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这个小题。

W: It's easy for parents to get worried about their kids being left behind. And as is known to all, two-year-olds don't need a computer. But early childhood experts agree that two-year-olds need the experience of using a computer. At the age of 3.5, most children can learn to handle the mouse. At this age, kids may not need a  computer, but they'll enjoy it. And they'll learn from it, often in unforeseen ways. Judy Salpeter, San Francisco, California, the editor of Tech & Learning, remembers that when her son was three years old, he loved a PaintBox program that allowed him to position stamps of little figures on the screen. One day, she overheard him saying, "I'll put all these here because they're food, and all these here because they're animals."  Although the software hadn't been designed to teach classification, it allowed him to experiment with that idea himself. If you don't have a computer by the time your child goes to school, he'll form his first impression of computers in the classroom. It's OK for children to learn the computer at school. But if they have used it at home, they'll feel smarter and it's easier for them to succeed in their studies. By third or fourth grade, however, students may be at a definite disadvantage in both writing and research if they don't have at-home access to word processing programs.

M: Not really. When I'm shopping I just pick things off the shelf, and I try to get to the bank as soon as it opens to avoid the waiting lines.

W: Sounds like you're dealing well with them without speaking Chinese.

M: The main problem is that when I get my hair cut, they just don't understand I want the same kind of haircut all year round — not shorter in the summer.

W: Hmm,you can't really take a Chinese person with you to explain, can you? How about getting someone to write a note for you?

Bill Gourlay,a filmmaker from Dunfermline,Fife, was given the film by a friend who asked him to transform it to the digital one. Mr. Gourlay was eager to find the mystery couple recorded in the film of the wedding in Kirkcaldy. After seeing the story in a newspaper, the Potters were amazed to finally look back at their big day.Mrs.Potter said,"We looked so young. It brought back a lot of happy memories. It was amazing to see all our friends and family on the film after all these years. It was very moving. My daughter saw it and had a bit of a cry. "Mr.and Mrs.Potter met at a dance in 1966. Mr. Potter, who was 21 at the time, was working as a mechanic while Annette was training to be a teacher. They were together for two years before getting married on July 27,1968 in front of around 80 guests. The couple looked very happy when they reflected on the occasion.

The hotel is around 12 feet wide and 35 feet long.   It plans to welcome its first guests in 2022. It will fly 320 kilometers above Earth.   It can hold six people at a time. Two of them will be workers. They may be former NASA astronauts. Each trip aboard the station will last for 12 days. Guests there will be able to do many interesting things. For example, they will see around 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. They can take part in research experiments such as growing food in space. Later, they can bring the food back to Earth as a souvenir. These are the same things as astronauts usually do. Guests can also share what they see and hear with others on Earth. They can have a video chat using a high-speed Internet connection. But each guest will have to pay at least $9.5 million. That's really a large amount of money.

M: Hello, everyone. My name's Ben. I'm from a group called "Nature". We run courses for young people like you to do during weekends. Now I'd like to tell you about the courses you can do on Saturday mornings. You can learn a lot about things like science and maths at school. These courses are really about giving you students the chance to come and find out wildlife. It's an area that tends to get forgotten. We usually take students to a wild place that's near their homes. Sometimes we go to a beach or a lake, but we've planned for you to go to a forest this time. That's the closest place for you, and the easiest to get to. Taking part in our activities means you get to do all sorts of things including building a fire, which you wouldn't normally be allowed to do at home. While you're with us, we'll also show you how to make things out of different materials. On the last course, everyone designed backpacks which they were very pleased with. This time we'd get you to design and make a birdhouse. When it is finished, you can take it home and show it to your family. We think you'll really enjoy this. Now, we'd like you to come and do some activities with us. You will spend three hours each week with us and the courses last for 12 weeks. That might sound a long time, but we think you'll not be sorry when it's over. Now, any questions?

M: Yes. The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program for kids is very good. This program begins at the beginning of May and runs for four and a half months.

W: How does it encourage children to read?

M: Well, children can earn a free book after they read eight books and log them on the downloadable reading journal. But the choice must be made from the selected books available at the store.

W: Can any child join in the reading program?

M: No. It is only available to students in grades 1 to 6.

W: That’s bad.  Jim is already in the seventh grade.

M: Then try the Books-A-Million Summer Reading Program. Children in middle school can also join in this reading program.

M: We're glad to have Dr. Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?

W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams or that they don't think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or that it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer. But suddenly, he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack. And he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there were some frightening events and to dream about them was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about them. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you're dreaming about it and even if the dream is frightening, your mind is working on it.  My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don't allow themselves to even think about it.

M: Do you use English when you write songs?

W: You won't believe it, but actually we use English almost everywhere in our work and life. The songs we listen to and the movies we watch are mostly English ones. The instruments and software we use are all in English. We communicate with singers abroad in English. English is just too important.

M: Have you ever thought of doing some English songs?

W: Yes, but maybe not in China. For one thing, I love Chinese, and also I am afraid my English is not that good.

M: What subjects did you hate or love when you were in school?

W: I loved Chinese and physics. And I wasn't very good at biology. I barely passed the exam.

M: What do you want to say to students who dream of being musicians or singers?

W: Studying should be the first thing to consider. The music industry is full of risk. Think twice before you enter this industry.

M: On average, I get something about three hundred from my parents.

W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?

M: Well, I spend it on many different things. I go to see films every week, and that costs much of my pocket money. Sometimes I buy CDs and collect cards and I also buy books.

W: Do you get extra money from any other sources?

M: Yes, but only a little.  That comes from doing a little housework for my uncle twice every week for 15 yuan each time. By the way, I live at my uncle's house, but I don't need to pay for the housing or meals, so I'm saving.

I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don't have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What's your favorite restaurant?

M: Well, it's just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. A couple of waitresses wear ugly pink uniforms. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. There are some truck drivers sitting at the counter drinking coffee and eating sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don't think that's true.

听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这个小题。

W: You don't need millions to be happy. In fact, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough at the Happiness Research Institute in Australia. The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying for lessons on how to feel great. Experts say that only 15 percent of happiness comes from income and other financial factors. As much as 85 percent comes from things such as attitudes, life control and relationships. Most of us are significantly wealthier financially than our parents, but happiness levels haven't changed to reflect that. Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness. Part of the reason why we are richer but not happier is that we compare ourselves to people better off materially. So if you want to be happy, there's a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less wealthy than you — poorer, with a smaller house and car. The Happiness Research Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappy factors by focusing on "more than just your bank account".
