W: It's 5:45 p.m. now. I'm glad that I can get off work in 15 minutes.
M: Don't you forget that we have to work two extra hours?
W: Oh, I have asked for leave.
M: Excuse me, I'd like to exchange the book.
W: I'm sorry. The book once sold will not be returned or exchanged unless it has quality problems.
M: Well, I found that some pages were missing.
W: This social news is so ridiculous.
M: I like reading education news. I have no interest in social news.
W: I just took a look. I pay more attention to technology news.
W: Is it raining outside?
M: No, it's cloudy.
W: It rained heavily yesterday. The weather forecast said there would be heavy snow in the next three days.
M: No wonder it's getting colder.
M: I've resigned.
W: Why? Are you going back to work for your father?
M: No, that's his business, not mine. Actually, I was admitted to the University of Milan.

W: Edward, who is the cutest person in your heart?
M: Oh, let me see. My grandfather is the most adorable person. Though he is a man of advanced years, he likes watering the flowers and playing chess. He was an accountant when he was young, so he often taught me math.
W: Sounds like you love him very much.
M: Definitely. What about you?
W: In my view, Yuan Longping is the cutest one, because he really made great contributions to improving people's living standard in the world.
M: Yes. And Tu Youyou is also a very great woman who is China's first winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Influenced by her, I chose the same major as hers in college.
W: Good.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: Why is it raining all the time? We haven't traveled for a long time.
M: The weather forecast said there would be dull days next week. Maybe the sun will come out after that.
W: Oh, no. I can't wait to spend the coming summer.
M: Come on. It's still two months away.
W: Just close your eyes and imagine that you eat half a watermelon and play with the smartphone in an air-conditioned room. Don't you think it is the best thing in summer?
M: Hmm...What if there's no Wi-Fi? It's absolutely the greatest invention in my heart. I can't live without it.
W: Oh, yes!
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第14四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
M: China's three-child policy has come out. Do you want to have another child, Nora?
W: I have no idea. I only have one child. My husband Anthony would like to have another one, because he wants to make our son Zen less lonely. As for me, I'm hesitating whether to ask Zen's advice.
M: Why?
W: Well, my son who will reach the age of 18 in five years is in his adolescence now. I think his opinion should be respected or he may feel neglected. But Anthony thinks there is no need to do so for it'll make us spoil the child.
M: I agree with you. For a child at a critical stage, you should treat him like an adult. You know our boss had her second child several years ago, but she still regrets neglecting the elder child's opinion because her two children can't get on well together.
W: I understand.
M: Or you can have a vote on the issue with your family if you really can't decide.
W: I guess I should respect my son's opinion and talk to him. Thanks, Leo.
听下面一段对话,回答第15至第17三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: Bella, you've been sneezing all morning. What's the matter?
W: I was taking a bath last night. Suddenly there was no hot water. Then I had to use cold water. I felt my body was as cold as ice after that.
M: It's troublesome to catch a cold in winter. I haven't had that for years because I keep swimming in winter.
W: Really? Does that help?
M: I think so. I joined the Bronte Splashers Winter Swimming Club in Australia ten years ago. Since then I've had a habit of swimming in winter.
W: Sounds good. In my hometown Moscow, there are many winter swimming clubs. But I can't swim.
M: Why? Are you afraid of that?
W: No, I have high blood pressure. It's risky to swim in winter.
M: Oh, what a pity! I was going to invite you to go swimming with me. By the way, remember to take some medicine as you have a bad cold.
W: OK, thank you.
听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: This is the story of two frogs. One frog was fat and the other was very thin. One day, while searching for food, they accidentally jumped into a tank of milk. They couldn't get out, as the sides were too slippery, so they were just swimming around. The fat frog said to the thin frog, "Brother frog, there's no use paddling any longer. So we might as well give up." The thin frog replied, "Hold on, Brother. Keep paddling." And they continued paddling for hours. After a while, the fat frog said, "Brother frog, I'm becoming very tired now. I'm going to stop paddling and drown. There's no possible way out of here." But the thin frog said, "Keep trying. Something will happen." Another couple of hours passed. The fat frog said, "There's no sense in doing it because we're going to drown anyway. What's the use?" And the fat frog stopped. He gave up. Then he drowned in the milk. But the thin frog kept on paddling. Ten minutes later, the thin frog felt something solid beneath his feet. He had stirred the milk into butter and he hopped out of the tank.

M: Who is your favorite athlete of all time? I like Maradona, since I play football.
W: The only sport I've ever played is basketball, but I like baseball player Babe Ruth the most.
W: Are you here to be interviewed for the teaching job?
M: Yes, I was due to be interviewed at 3:15 pm, but they're running fifteen minutes late.
W: Ah, my appointment is fifteen minutes after yours.
M: Let's get all of our ideas on the board first. So we can read them all and then decide the solution. Let's start with you, Susan.
W: Alright, where is the marker?
W: Quickly, get the camera out. I need to take a photo of this landscape before we pass by. The mountains are so beautiful.
M: Be careful not to drop it, though. It'll sink in a second and I can't swim.
M: Hello, do you have any idea why I am stopping you today? For your information, it's not because you're speeding.
W: Oh no, my taillight must have finally died. It has been losing power for a while.

听下面一段对话,回答第6至第7两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
M: Can you tell me what's not in your bag, Mary? What did we say about remembering to take all of your stuff at the end of the day?
W: But I didn't forget anything. I swear.
M: Well, let's take a look through the bag together. A pencil case. A book. Shouldn't there be anything else?
W: Oh no...My lunch box.
M: Where do you think you left it?
W: I must have left it in the classroom. Let's go back there.
M: We can't, honey. The school is already closed. You'll have to remember to take it back tomorrow after Mom drops you off.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: It is surprising that someone with your level of intelligence works in construction. Didn't you go to university?
M: Actually, I study management in school. But my dad owns this building company, and I like to help him when I can. Every year during the summer break, I join the crew and lay bricks. That's my specialty.
W: But it is such dangerous work. With your background, wouldn't it make more sense to make advertisements for your dad, or manage the crew?
M: Actually, I like the work. I get to be outdoors. It's a change of pace from what I usually do all day — sit in front of a computer and think. It feels like a more honest way of making money. But it's definitely not easy.
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: There's hardly anybody out here. Is the concert really supposed to start in one hour?
W: Yes, but that's when the opening band gets on stage. The main band starts playing half an hour later, at 10:30 am.
M: No wonder there was so much space to park outside. I even thought we should take the bus, since I know how packed these kinds of events get.
W: That's why I made us leave early. Now, we can also walk around and explore the area before the show starts.
M: Good call. What do you want to see?
W:There's a famous lake not far from Central Park. Let's see it. If we come back here when it's warm, we can even go swimming and have a barbecue.
M: OK. Let's be quick, though. I already see some groups coming. Imagine having to squeeze into the massive crowds once the music starts.
W: Yes, that would really be something. Don't worry, it's not far.
听下面一段对话,回答第14至第17四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
W: A group of people are wearing the colorful clothing. What are they doing?
M: Those are costumes. They're wearing them because they are professional folk dancers. I think they are doing a street performance. We should go and see.
W: Great! I'm a dancer too, although their style is very different from mine. I'm a contemporary dancer, so usually I just wear my regular clothes.
M: Traditional styles of art have always interested me. Their ancestors also did what they're doing now. Instead of reading history books and seeing history lectures, we are seeing living history.
W: It also looks quite difficult — like a mix of gymnastics and ballet.
M: Oh, I know why they are performing here in the street today. Where they practise is right in front of their dance studio. I guess it's like a stage to make the school get more attention and more students. You should sign up and try some classes!
W: Ha-ha, I was never that good. I always got frightened on stage in front of the audience. Maybe you should!
M: I don't think I could dance either. I can barely touch my toes.
W: That's not so important. I've never heard someone play the piano like you do.
M:Well, it is my job, after all.
W: I think you would do great in a dance class!
听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
Hello, new colleagues! I don't really know what to say today, so I will try to keep this short. I am honored to be at such an excellent company, especially right after completing my degree and research. I was a volunteer here, 8 years ago, I wished I could one day join the South Boston Electronics Corporation officially. So, I'd like to thank the human resources team, where I worked back then, for making that first experience successful. Hopefully, my time with the Business Strategy Department will be equally rewarding. My research background is in engineering and development. However, I applied to the Business Strategy Department because I was impressed by the strong talent in the department. I hope to learn a lot. In my final year in graduate school, I read many books, especially about engineering, my area of knowledge. However, my favorite book was from a class I took on Portuguese literature. It had this quote:People never learn anything by being told. They have to find out by themselves. The book talks a lot about psychology — its main focus. However, I'm not sure that the quote is completely correct. While at this company, I plan on learning everything I can both by being told and through discovery. I look forward to meeting all of you personally. Feel free to come to my office downstairs on the 10th floor and chat anytime.

W: Did you have anything exciting during the weekend, Johnson?
M: No, not really. I was thinking of playing football with my friends. But the speech competition is approaching, so I had to stay at home to prepare for it.
M: If I work out twice per week, when will I have a six-pack abs?
W: At least one month. But you'll also need to eat healthier foods and do running exercises.
M: Later on, I'll go to the gym three times per week rather than once.
M: I've been scared to travel by plane ever since I was a kid. I love driving, though.
W: I agree about flying. It's so inconvenient to drive long distances, though.
M: I bet a really fast train would be the best alternative.
W: Yes, that would be perfect!
M: Spain and France are some of the best football teams in the world. This will be a great game.
W: Are they playing here in Paris?
M: They chose a stadium in England to avoid giving either team home-field advantage.
W: Thank you, young man. This bag is so heavy. I never could have carried it onto the train.
M: My pleasure, ma'am. I saw you struggling and felt I needed to help.
W: You're a kind boy — you remind me of my grandson. Thanks again!

听下面一段对话,回答第6至第7两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
M: Should I dress as a soldier or a cowboy for the holiday?
W: You wear the same costume every year. Why don't you mix your costumes up and be a movie character like Iron Man?
M: Mom said she would buy me a superhero costume. That's a great idea. What are you being?
W: Probably nothing. I'm going to take a break from costumes and candy this year.
M: You'll be missing out on all the fun!
W: Not really. I'll stay home and watch some scary movies with Mom.
M: She'll love your company. After I go out with my friends, I'll join you.
W: It'll be so fun. I hope you can join us.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: Where is the director? This is the third time he's been late this week.
M:If he is not here, tell the crew to break for lunch.
W: But it's barely 10:00 a.m. We only had breakfast two hours ago.
M: I know, but that will buy an hour for us. I'll contact the studio to see if they know where he is.
W: Tell them they should fire him and you should take over.
M: I'm just the assistant director. I don't want to direct this movie.
W: But if you step forward and show your leadership, the studio will notice that and give you a film you do want.
M: I hadn't thought of it like that, but you're right.
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: I want to find a perfect apartment, but I don't have time to wait.
M: I have many apartments. I promise to find you a good place to live.
W: I hope so. One of our requirements is a large kitchen, as my husband loves to cook.
M: I have a beautiful apartment downtown with new kitchen equipment.
W: My husband will take a look. I actually don't know much about kitchens. I'd also love to have big windows with a city view.
M: You'll love living downtown. The views are fantastic.
W: Living downtown would be nice. Now we live outside the city. This weekend I'll be out of town, and my work schedule keeps me busy most nights as well.
M: I have the same work hours.
W: Let's go as soon as possible. We need to move into a new apartment this month.
M: We can go on Monday. Then hopefully you'll be relaxed in your new downtown apartment by next week.
W: Thank you, but we need to keep our expectations low as we've had many problems recently.
听下面一段对话,回答第14至第16三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: Excuse me, Miss. You must show your ticket to board this train to Tokyo.
W: I'm sorry. I bought a ticket online, but I can't find a place to print out the information.
M: There's no need to print it out. If you show me the information on your phone, that will be OK.
W: The other problem is that I bought a ticket for the wrong departure time. I'm trying to change it, but the woman at the ticket office doesn't speak English. I'm so confused.
M: I'm sorry to hear about your trouble. If you'd like, I can help you talk to the ticket office staff.
W: That would be great. I've been so confused about organizing my ticket.
M: What time would you like to leave and how many people are you traveling with?
W: I'm still waiting for one of my friends to join me here, but I think she's running late. The train we need to take is leaving in about 30 minutes.
M: Miss, that is barely enough time. Do you urgently have to get to Tokyo?
W: Not really. We just agreed to take that train. She'll be here soon. I'll tell her I'll wait for her at the ticket office.
M: I understand. Now let's talk to the lady at the ticket office.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
W: Hello everyone, and welcome to today's job fair. We are here today to talk about choosing a career and exploring new job opportunities. Many young people look for careers in the most popular job markets such as computer programming or website design. These industries are important, because in the future we will continue to need more people working on computer technology. Additionally, many young people choose jobs in health care. Doctors and hospital workers will always be in high demand, but the fastest-growing job market in the country today is health workers caring for people in their homes. Finding career opportunities also depends on where you live. If you live in Boston, the largest field of work is in universities. If you live in New York City, the largest workforce is in finance. Or, if you live here in Los Angeles like me, the largest industry is entertainment. Whichever opportunity you'd like to pursue, remember these important rules for having a career. The biggest rule is to do something that you have a passion for. Once you choose something inspiring, you must try to meet people in that industry. Meeting these people is not only to find progressive advice for your career, but also the best way to develop professional contacts and find a job for yourself. There are many people here from different industries to advise you and explain their businesses. To all young people here today, have fun and feel free to ask a lot of questions!

W: Excuse me, sir. Could you show me the way to the Business Center?
M: Sure. Go straight and turn right at the traffic lights onto Rainbow Street, and then turn left. Go straight for about five minutes. The Business Center is on your right, next to the bus station.
M: I spoke to James today. He said house prices in London have gone through the roof.
W: Yeah, I heard. Is James going to buy a house there?
M: Well, only if the bank will lend him some money.
W: Is it really necessary to speak so loudly when I am only a couple of feet away?
M: I'm sorry. I thought you wouldn't be able to hear me over the TV.
W: Did you find the book for your reading assignment in the library?
M: It closed before I got there. I had no idea it closed so early on weekends.
W: When was the last time you took out cash from an ATM?
M: Uh, three or four days ago, I guess.
W: That's what I thought. Hmm, that's strange. I thought we had more money in our checking account. I'll call the bank and find out what's going on.

听下面一段对话,回答第6至第7两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
W: Lance, do you spend a lot of time online?
M: To be honest, no. I usually use my computer to write papers for my classes. I'm not one of those guys who were always playing online games or surfing the Net. I think many people spend too much time in front of their computers and don't spend enough time in front of each other!
W: I totally agree with you.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第9两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
W: I'm exhausted, Harry.
M: I know, but no one has stopped. Cheer up! Someone will give us a ride as long as we keep trying.
W: Can we sit here and wait? I can't go on.
M: All right. Let's rest for a minute.
W: Oh, I shouldn't have come with you on this silly trip.
M: Don't say that, Laura. We've had a lot of fun over the past few days, haven't we?
W: We did, but now I'm... Hey, here comes another truck... Stop, please!... Oh, he won't stop.
M: Look! He stopped.
W: Thank goodness.
M: Let's get all our stuff together! Hurry!
听下面一段对话,回答第10至第13四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
M: Hey, I heard you would be flying to China in two weeks.
W: Yeah, I'm really excited — I've never been to Asia before.
M: Did you get a cheap flight? The airlines have raised their prices a lot recently, with the price of oil going up.
W: Yeah, I managed to get a cheap flight with Finnair — I booked it a week ago. They started flying direct to Shanghai recently, but not from London.I'll have to fly to Helsinki first and have a 6-hour stopover. Then I'll have a 9-hour flight to Shanghai.
M: Wow, 6 hours in the airport? No wonder you got a discount. What'll you do for all that time?
W: Well, I guess I can watch a movie on my laptop, as long as my battery doesn't run out. I looked online, and I can have a Finnish meal at a nice café there, and buy some Finnish liquor at the duty-free store.
M: I had a 5-hour stopover in Moscow once, when I flew back to London from Tokyo. It was pretty boring. I just wandered around the airport. I couldn't afford to buy anything because I was a poor student at the time.
听下面一段对话,回答第14至第16三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: Hey, Chloe! How are you?
W: Uh, hey, Jordan. I'm a little surprised you're even talking to me. You seemed pretty mad at me last week.
M: I know, I'm sorry about that. I was just in a bad mood. I got fired from my job that day for something that I didn't even do.
W: Oh, no, I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?
M: I missed work, but I wasn't even supposed to be there that day. Tammy, the woman who did the schedules, forgot to tell me that she had changed the schedule last week. I tried to tell my manager about it, but after Mr. Ainsworth talked to Tammy, he took her side and fired me on the spot.
W: That's ridiculous! You should complain to Mr. Ainsworth's boss!
M: Well, there isn't much I can do about it. It's basically my words against Tammy's, and she has been there a lot longer than me. Plus, I think Mr. Ainsworth would do pretty much anything she asked him to do.
W: How do the other people in the office think of Tammy?
M: I'm not sure, but it's pretty obvious that she is Mr. Ainsworth's favorite person in the office.
W: Well, it sounds like you are better off without that job. With your experience and skills, you can get a good job soon.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
W: Today is World Elephant Day,a day focusing on the protection of elephants across the world. The two main species are African elephants and Asian elephants. Both are endangered due to illegal hunting and habitat loss. Although many countries have banned elephant hunting, the illegal ivory trade has increased in recent years. Therefore,we should never ever buy products made of ivory. Two years ago,my family traveled to an Asian country. My father showed interest in an ivory product, but I talked him out of buying it.We should also not watch any elephant performances. Elephants have to suffer a lot during the training. They are beaten frequently. If we don't go to watch such performances, they won't be trained and beaten. Third,we should encourage zoos to create environments similar to their native habitats. They should be located in a warm climate so that the elephants can spend all year outside and live a healthy life.

W: Be careful. If you race ahead too quickly, you will fall off your skateboard and end up in hospital.
M: I know how to skateboard, Mom. I've been to this park many times before.
W: Did you hear about what happened on the news? Apparently the apartment I used to live in went up in flames.
M: I know, it's on almost every television channel right now. Luckily, no one was hurt. I'm just glad you moved out.
M: Are you going to the museum in London next week, Sarah?
W: I had hoped to, but I can't find anywhere to stay.
M: Have you tried the Sunset Guest House? They might still have a room and it's right next to the museum.
M: So, how do they look, doctor? I have been brushing my teeth twice a day, just like you told me.
W: Good, that's what I like to hear. Just make sure you stay away from sweets, and use that mouthwash I recommended.
W: How were those basketball tickets I gave you? Did we win?
M: Yeah, it's just too bad that my favorite player was injured. I would have liked to see him in action.
W: Stop complaining. I didn't even get to see the game on TV.

W: Tony! It must be a year since we last met. We don't seem to get together any more.
M:My job takes me out of town a lot more these days. I hardly see anyone I know.
W: Oh, I see.I'd like to talk more but I have to catch this train. We must meet up again soon.
M: That would be great. Give me a call.
W: I will. Are you still living in the same house?
M: Yes, on Market Street.
W: OK, I'll see you later then.
M: Yes, take care.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第9两个小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
W: What kind of apartment should I get when I am in college? I could live on campus, off campus, with roommates, or just one.
M: In my first year, I lived on campus with three others. It helped me make friends and get familiar with the school.
W: If I choose a dormitory, I have to decide by next week. I wish it was next month. What did you do after your first year?
M: I lived off campus after that. Depending on how you like living on campus, you can change accommodations in your second year. You might actually find it cheaper to live off campus, but then you have to think about transportation. Anyway, get familiar with the school first. And have at least one roommate but no more than four. More than that will make school life too complex.
听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: I must hurry home. My favorite TV show starts in an hour.
M: But why do you need to hurry? Watch it later.
W: You mean record it or watch a repeat?
M: These days you can watch anything at any time on the Internet. You don't need a fixed time.
W: I am behind the times with these things. Can you tell me how to do it? My mom and dad don't know.
M: I bet your brother knows.
W: All right. I'll watch it the old way today and ask him to help me watch it the new way in future.
M: Which show is so important, anyway? Is it a romance series, or a thriller?
W: It's strange. I have never liked fantasy show but the one I am watching now has really got me hooked.
M: Oh, I know the one you mean. It's very popular. I watched the first two series in one night.
W: How did you do that?
M: The way I was telling you. Get your brother to show you how it's done.
听下面一段对话,回答第13至第16四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
M: Are you packed for our trip, Sharon?
W: Almost, Dad.
M: You'd better get it done now. Grandma and grandpa are dropping us off early tomorrow morning at the airport. Plus, you have to go to bed in a couple hours.
W: Fine. I can't decide what to take with me, though.
M: What do you have so far?
W: I have four pairs of shorts, socks, and two pairs of shoes. I also packed my shirts, a bathing suit, a towel and my toothbrush.
M: You don't have that much room in your suitcase. We're only gone for four days.
W: OK. I'll take three pairs of everything instead.
M: Are you sure you need two pairs of shoes?
W: Yes. One is my normal pair, and one is for the beach.
M: Good thinking. You don't need a towel, though. They'll have plenty of those at the hotel.
W:Are Auntie Carol and Uncle Terry going to be on the plane with us?
M: Of course. And we booked you a seat right beside their daughter Lucy.
W: Wow! I can't wait to tell her about my new friends at school. How long is the flight?
M: Six hours. So bring a book with you. I don't want you watching movies the whole time.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
It's still painful to think of an experience I had when I was about eight years old. In those days, before the appearance of CDs, MP3 players and other media, all recorded music was played on plastic records. At the end of the school term, our teacher invited us to bring our favorite records to be played on the school record player. My favorite was a children's song performed by two little pigs from a TV show, so that was the one I took to school. However, everyone else in my class was a bit more grown up and they took with them all the latest pop music hits. I was so embarrassed when it came to my childish record to be played. All the other children laughed while it was playing. It was the longest three minutes I had ever spent. However, this early experience taught me an important lesson. I was so angry with myself. Never again would I be old-fashioned and behind the times. I came to be an expert on music and went on to gain a great deal of pleasure from it. These days, if anyone is selecting a team for a music quiz, they will often ask me to take part because of my wide knowledge of music. So, rather than being a sad experience that scarred me for life, the initial shame of this incident has taught me a lot and pushed me to become what I am today.

W: Why not try Chinatown? There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants there, and it's near here.
M: Let's do something different for vacation this year. Oh, let's go to Colorado. I want to learn snowboarding.
W: Oh, Paul, you know I don't like cold weather. Can't we go someplace warm, like the beach?
W: This job is for three days a week: Monday, Friday, and Saturday. Are you okay with that?
M: I was hoping to have Saturday free. But I need the job, so...can you tell me what exactly I will do?
M: Do you know if John's coming home for dinner?
W: He'll be late. He told me not to wait for him.
W: I'm really tired of packing all these boxes. It's about time to call it a day.
M: I know. Maybe we could do it tomorrow morning.
W: Why not? These orders are not urgent.

W: Hi, Ned.
M: Don't you usually drive to work?
W: Usually, but not in bad weather.
M: Why is that?
W: The traffic gets a lot worse when it rains or snows.
M: I always take the subway. It's a lot faster for me than driving.
W: It's faster for me, too, but the time isn't always convenient.
M: Yeah, but think of all the things you can do on the subway — read a book or the newspaper...
W: Or answer my email...No thanks! My workday is long enough already.
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
W: I think the car we saw yesterday would be a good deal. What do you think?
M: Yes, but I think you should ask someone to take a look at it just to be sure.
W: My friend Jack knows cars, and he helped me do the check this morning.
M: It was smart of you to think ahead. Have you and the salesman agreed on a price?
W: Yes, he finally agreed to accept the discounted price I asked.
M: Then have you thought about how to pay?
W: Well, I've saved up enough money to pay cash for this car.
M: Good. Let me go with you to make the payment and drive the car home for you.
W: Thank you. That would make it much easier for me.
M: You're welcome. Let's go take care of that right now.
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: Being away from home for college can be stressful. Besides all the pressures of study, there's the pressure on your pocket. Today, let's go to a university to find out. Excuse me. Can I ask you a few questions?
W: Well, okay.
M: How do you find the cost of living in the city?
W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and traveling.
M: So, what do you spend most on?
W: Transport, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it's not expensive at all. For clothing, I bring my clothes here from my home country, where they're nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains.
M: Then what's the social life like?
W: I'm a very sociable person. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people. Thankfully, I don't drink or smoke, so the only expenses are maybe tickets to cinemas, clubs, and so on.
听下面一段对话,回答第14至第16三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
W: Can you fix a time for the next meeting, Alex? How about June 12th? That's after the trade exhibition.
M: I think something is happening on that day, Rebecca.
W: Oh, yes. You're right. The people from the head office are coming.
M: What time does their plane arrive? Can we have the meeting in the morning?
W: No, it's all arranged. I'm meeting them at half past ten, so I won't be available at all that day.
M: Well, let's have the meeting earlier in June, then. The trade exhibition finishes on June 3rd, doesn't it?
W: Yes, but we need John's sales report for the meeting. How's it going?
M: I'm afraid John hasn't started yet. The figures won't be in place till next week.
W: Will it be ready early in June?
M: Well, not really. He told me that he would finish them by June 10th.
W: So, we're looking at June 17th. How about two o'clock on that day?
M: I think that's okay. Let's meet here again then.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
W: Hello, everyone. In today's program, I'd like to share a true story of mine. One day, my friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to rain heavily. When it became lighter, I decided to brave the rain to get my car and go home. It was parked three blocks away. My friends argued I shouldn't go because at that time, I was due to give birth in three months. I promised I'd be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me, but I insisted she stay with another friend who needed help with her baby. When I walked to the first crossroads, a taxi stopped and a passenger came out with an umbrella . Before I knew what was happening, he walked right beside me and told me he would walk with me to where I would go. I refused, but he insisted. During our walk, he kept telling me to walk slowly. When we got to the car park, I thanked him, and we parted ways. I did not get his name and may not even recognize him now. Did he purposely stop for me? I'll never know.

W: Sure. When the class is over, I need to go to the lab first and then I'll be in the cafeteria at about 12:30. Let's meet then.
M: Okay, thanks, Professor Jackson.
M: What are you cooking? It smells delicious.
W: I'm making a carrot cake.
M: Nice. I see a roast chicken and an apple pie over there too.
W: The chicken is for dinner and the pie is for Jeff. He has to take something to school tomorrow.
W: This neighborhood really needs a library. How can we get one?
M: I think we should have a meeting to talk about it.
W: Hi, Jim. How's your new job going?
M: It's very exciting. And I'm really learning a lot, but it's also quite tiring. I feel like a good break this weekend.
M: Amanda, what skill would you like to develop?
W: Well, I want to learn to play the guitar. I love writing songs, you know. And I think it would be lovely if I could play my own music and entertain people.

W: No, I don't think so.
M: Then you have to go in person to one of our branches and talk to a clerk there.
W: I see. Is there a bank near Brown College?
M: We have one branch at 135 Dudley Road and one at 512 Kingfield Street.
W: I think I will go to the one on Dudley. Thank you.

W: Well, it started at one o'clock and it usually lasts about two hours.
M: All right. In that case, could you please tell him to check his email? I've sent him an important document. I'm waiting for his reply.
W: Certainly. Anything else, sir?
M: Yes, I'd like to know what would be the best time for us to meet before Friday. I must meet him this week. Please tell him to include the time in his reply.
W: Do you want to meet him in our office or in your office, sir?
M: Oh, either is fine.

W:It's for my sister. It's her graduation day today.
M: It must cost you a fortune.
W: I paid $60 for it, but it's worth it. Jane worked very hard for her degree over the last four years. Today is a very important day for her. And I want it to be special.
M: That's very nice of you. I wish it were our graduation day too.
W:Another three years and we'll be done too.
M: Where are they going to hold the graduation ceremony?
W: In the conference hall at 2:00 pm. It'll be a feast ceremony.
M: I guess you should be there early, otherwise you won't get a seat.
W: Yes. I'll try to find a seat close to the stage. I want to take some good pictures of my sister.
M: Have fun, Annie. Give Jane my best wishes.
W: Thanks. Bye, Steve.

M: I was leaving, but I can join you for a few minutes.
W: Great. So tell me how is your family?
M: Well, it keeps getting bigger. We have four kids now, all boys.
W: Four boys? I suppose they keep you busy.
M: They sure do. The baby is only one month old, so Sally is not working right now. And what's new with you and Jim?
W: Believe it or not. He's home with the kids.
M: You're kidding.
W: No, I'm not. Jim chose to work from home, so we could spend less on childcare. I love it, because he does all the shopping and cleaning.
M: Good point. Yikes, it's already 12:30. I have to go now. I have an important meeting this afternoon. Tell Jim I said hi. And I'll call you, so we can have dinner sometime.
W: Great. And say hi to Sally and the kids. See you.

Good evening, everyone. I'm Jennifer Green. Thanks for joining us. In today's edition, Our Perfect Life, our guest is Brock Bastian, a social psychologist from The University of Melbourne. Professor Bastian's research focuses on pain, happiness and morality. Recently, he published a book on the role of pain in promoting pleasure. The title of the book is The Other Side of Happiness. In this book, he argues that as we seek to escape pain or sorrow, we're weakening ourselves and may lose our adaptability to deal with pain in the future. Painful experiences are in fact vital for our development and how we face the unavoidable challenges ahead and they play a key role in helping us develop our ability to feel truly happy. Now, let's welcome Professor Bastian to talk about his ideas in the book.
