W: Be careful. If you race ahead too quickly, you will fall off your skateboard and end up in hospital.

M: I know how to skateboard, Mom. I've been to this park many times before.

  

 

W: Did you hear about what happened on the news? Apparently the apartment I used to live in went up in flames.

M: I know, it's on almost every television channel right now. Luckily, no one was hurt. I'm just glad you moved out.

 

 

M: Are you going to the museum in London next week, Sarah?

W: I had hoped to, but I can't find anywhere to stay.

M: Have you tried the Sunset Guest House? They might still have a room and it's right next to the museum.

 

 

M: So, how do they look, doctor? I have been brushing my teeth twice a day, just like you told me.

W: Good, that's what I like to hear. Just make sure you stay away from sweets, and use that mouthwash I recommended.

 

 

W: How were those basketball tickets I gave you? Did we win?

M: Yeah, it's just too bad that my favorite player was injured. I would have liked to see him in action.

W: Stop complaining. I didn't even get to see the game on TV.

W: What kind of apartment should I get when I am in college? I could live on campus, off campus, with roommates, or just one.

M: In my first year, I lived on campus with three others. It helped me make friends and get familiar with the school.

W: If I choose a dormitory, I have to decide by next week. I wish it was next month. What did you do after your first year?

M: I lived off campus after that. Depending on how you like living on campus, you can change accommodations in your second year. You might actually find it cheaper to live off campus,  but then you have to think about transportation. Anyway, get familiar with the school first. And have at least one roommate but no more than four. More than that will make school life too complex.

W:Are Auntie Carol and Uncle Terry going to be on the plane with us?

M: Of course. And we booked you a seat right beside their daughter Lucy.

W: Wow! I can't wait to tell her about my new friends at school. How long is the flight?

M: Six hours. So bring a book with you. I don't want you watching movies the whole time.

It's still painful to think of an experience I had when I was about eight years old. In those days, before the appearance of CDs, MP3 players and other media, all recorded music was played on plastic records.  At the end of the school term, our teacher invited us to bring our favorite records to be played on the school record player. My favorite was a children's song performed by two little pigs from a TV show, so that was the one I took to school. However, everyone else in my class was a bit more grown up and they took with them all the latest pop music hits. I was so embarrassed when it came to my childish record to be played. All the other children laughed while it was playing. It was the longest three minutes I had ever spent. However, this early experience taught me an important lesson. I was so angry with myself. Never again would I be old-fashioned and behind the times. I came to be an expert on music and went on to gain a great deal of pleasure from it. These days, if anyone is selecting a team for a music quiz, they will often ask me to take part because of my wide knowledge of music. So, rather than being a sad experience that scarred me for life, the initial shame of this incident has taught me a lot and pushed me to become what I am today.
