W: Are you ready? I've got a hat for the sun, and some spare balls. There's a tennis match later so the court's only available until 3. Therefore we should get a lift from Dad.

M: It would be nice to ride our bikes if we had time, but it's good, and thus we won't have to carry things.

M: It's me again. I've just realized I have to see the doctor at 11:00 tomorrow morning. Could we possibly meet at 12:00 instead of 10:00?

W: No problem. I could meet you for a working lunch if that suits you.

M: We were so lucky that we got these last-minute tickets.

W: Yeah. But a flight home would be much faster and more comfortable than a train ride.

M: But it was too expensive. At least this is faster than a coach.

M: Everybody said this geography course would be easy.

W: But it hasn't quite worked out that way, has it?

W: Shall we meet by the ticket office at the concert hall?

M: There'll be so many people there. I might miss you. Why don't we wait for each other at the café near the entrance?

W: Good idea. We can get coffee there before the concert starts.

M: Another app to download. But do you really think it'll catch on?

W: Well, everyone has a cellphone nowadays so the basic technology's there already. And it'll be more convenient than using cash or a credit card. In fact, some stores won't even accept cash payments.

M: But will it be all that convenient? I mean getting out my cellphone won't be any easier than taking out my credit card.

W: True. But you need to take into consideration just how many services are dealt with online. By connecting your credit cards to your cellphone, you'll be able to use it wherever you are — at home, in the office or at the mall.

M: Hi Zoe! Have you heard about the arts festival?

W: No, but I'm not too interested in painting and drawing.

M: Well, there are some good concerts on!

W: Really? Are there any rock concerts that I would like? Or, are they classical music concerts only?

M: Most of them are classical. However, your favorite rock star Bob Wood will be there.

W: That sounds nice. Where's the event?

M: It was going to be in the old cinema, near the stadium. But he's so popular that they've changed their plans. Now it's going to be in the big exhibition center. It's on Wednesday.

W: Oh no. I can't come! It's my brother's birthday. He asked me to play the music at his party!

M: That's a pity!

W: Peter, I'm planning a day trip to Paris.

M: That's wonderful. Eurostar trains take about two hours and 20 minutes if you go from the center of London to the center of Paris. Plus the train journey is pleasant.

W: Good idea. The bus from London to Paris takes more than seven hours. Driving takes under six hours if you don't hit traffic problems. Not worth it.

M: I encourage you to choose two or three activities and to plan your day around them. You're not interested in art, so you don't have to go to any museums. I don't recommend you to climb the Eiffel Tower either. Instead, I recommend getting a good view from the nearby Arc de Triomphe.

W: Any other advice?

M: The weather changes quickly in Paris and rain can come out of nowhere, even on a sunny day. So do not forget an umbrella!

M: Hey, Jane! What's so interesting?

W: Oh hi, Tom.I'm reading this article on the societies of the Ice Age.

M: The Ice Age? There weren't any societies then — there were just small groups of people living in caves, right?

W: That's what people used to think. But according to the article, the Ice Age people were surprisingly advanced.

M: Oh, really? In what ways?

W: Well, the Ice Age people were the inventors of language, art, and music as we know it. And they didn't live in caves; they built their own shelters.

M: What did they use to build them?

W: In some of the warmer places they built houses of wood. In other places they used animal bones and skins or lived in natural stone shelters.

M: How did they stay warm?

W: Well, it says here that in the early Ice Age they often built their houses facing south to take advantage of the sun.

M: Hey, that's pretty smart.

W: Then people in the late Ice Age even warmed their homes by putting heated stones on the floor.

M: I guess I spoke too soon. Well, I will give a presentation on the Ice Age next week. Can you help me with that? I'm going to impress my classmates with my amazing knowledge of Ice Age civilization.

M: We are very proud of our nature garden here at Regent School. Mr. Jenkins started this garden as part of the national project called "Protect Our Nature". Teachers can use the garden for lots of different subjects, such as science and math. However, they mostly use it to teach biology. Students learn about how the flowers grow and change during the year. But there are more things students can do in the garden. For example, Mrs. Collins, our art teacher, takes her class to the nature garden once a week. Her students spend an hour there, drawing pictures of their favorite plants. There are some trees students can draw. We started with just three trees, but now there are eleven. We hope to grow more and have twenty by next year. Parents are welcome to visit our garden. Students and teachers are always busy from Monday to Wednesday and sometimes on Fridays. So, the best day to come is on a Thursday. It's better to come then so that we can show you around.
