W: We finally managed to get tickets for the festival.
M: They're quite good seats so we should be able to see the musicians really well.
W: And they were a bit less expensive than we had expected.
M:Hello!
W: Can I help you with anything?
M: Er...Yes. I'm here to see the flat. I saw your ad about a room for rent.
W: Oh, you've come to the wrong door. The flat for rent is one floor up.
M: Would you like to read my new novel once I've finished editing it?
W: Sure, but I'll be very honest. I don't hold back.
M: That's exactly what I need. After that I will send it to the reviewers.
W:Hello, Helen Smith speaking. Can I help you?
M: Hello, this is David. Could I speak to Mike, please?
W: I'm afraid he's not available at the moment. Would you leave a message?
M: Yes. I'm calling to cancel the meeting we scheduled for this afternoon.
W: OK. Let me take this down. Could I have your name again?
M: Certainly. It's David Stone.
M: Hi, Jenny. Are you going to school now?
W: Yep. I have an English class at 9:00 in the morning.
M: We will have our midterm exams next month. I plan to look for some important books in the library. Do you want to join me?
W: Sure. I need to return some books.
M: Great. We can go to the swimming pool in the gym after that.
W: That sounds like a good idea. We can chill out a little in such a hot summer.
第二组
听下面10段对话或独白。每段对话或独白后有1个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话或独白后,每小题将给出10秒钟的作答时间。每段对话或独白读两遍。
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, my daughter bought this camera here for my wife's birthday. But it doesn't work. So I'd like to change it for another one.
W: I see. Let me have a look. Well, we'll be happy to change it for you, but I'm afraid we don't have another pink one.
M: Oh, what would I do then?
W: Would you like to choose a different colour? We do have this camera in black and orange.
M: My wife doesn't like either of those colours.
W: If you want, we can order another camera, just like this one. There wouldn't be any extra charge for it.
M: That sounds fine.
W: Here is a piece of news for bird lovers. Scientists have painted a long road in red, yellow and white. They hope to discourage the seabirds from wandering onto the highway. "The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season. Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic," biology student Hannah tells the broadcaster. The youngsters' feathers are brown in color. The dark-colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed. The number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads. Biologist Kristin says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multi-colored road this summer. And if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country.
M: Having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't really help our motivation much.
W: Don't be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair from Harvard University has done a study of how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.
M: Hmm... Interesting.
W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes' exercise in a week had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too, lowering their death risk by 14%.
M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I probably do? Does that help?
W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.
W: Today we all know that in Chinese lunar calendar, a year consists of 24 solar terms , but during the Shang Dynasty, people only used four; the Zhou Dynasty, eight. It was not until the time of the Western Han Dynasty that the 24 solar terms were finally decided upon.
The 24 solar terms were created by farmers in ancient China to guide farmed activities. They are based on the sun's position and reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production, and other aspects of human life, including clothing, food, housing and transportation.
There are many customs about these terms. For example, on the day of "Dongzhi", people in northern China eat steamed dumplings to keep warm. On the day of "Lixia", or the Beginning of Summer, people drink tea to fight the hot weather.
W: Hello, everyone. My name's Andy Johnson. I'm from Worldwide Students Project, a service organization which is aimed to improve international understanding. Now we've got volunteers from 30 different countries working around the world. If you're interested in joining us, I'd like to tell you something about some of the projects.
The first project I'd like to tell you is in Spain. It's a village improvement project. You'd be working with local people, so you need to be fluent in Spanish. The next one is a children's holiday center in Egypt. The work includes painting rooms, gardening and things like that. The final project is for the medical students here. There is a placement in a center for disabled children in India. You'd be providing medical care there.
M: We're glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams or that they don't think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or they were so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. Generally, when there were some frightening events and to dream about them was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about them. As long as you're dreaming about it and even if the dream is frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems.
M: Julie, our school's planning committee has been asking about you. Where have you been?
W: I won't be attending any more meetings. I told Mrs.Hall I don't have the time to volunteer anymore.
M: That's too bad. Did you get a job or something?
W: Well, my dad wanted me to go out and find a job. But I told him I didn't think I would be able to balance school and work at the same time.
M: And what did he say?
W: He said if I started taking on more responsibility at home, he would let me use the family car.
M: That's not bad!
W: I know. I just thought it's time to start forming some good living habits now. In a couple of years, I'll be in college living on my own. I'll have no one to rely on but myself.
M: Good for you.
M: The English Camp Company organises English Summer Camps for 7-to 14-year-olds. Our fun-loving teachers are well qualified with backgrounds of English teaching.
This summer, we will take a trip to Canada. We will participate in some voluntary work. The most exciting one is that we will have an adventure trip into the green jungle. We will also go for a trip to Italy. You will be impressed by its architecture. We will live and learn together in University of Milan. Our trip to Canada lasts for ten days and costs $1,000 and the one to Italy lasts for a week and costs $800.
We offer a fun and relaxing atmosphere for children to learn English. No one will ever learn a language without making mistakes. At our camps, we don't ask the children to speak English perfectly. We only ask them to do their best. Join our camps for the summer of your life !
W: Hello, Michael.
M: Hi, Sarah.
W: Are you attending the conference tomorrow morning at the Shelton Hotel?
M: Yes, are you?
W: Yeah, but when I arrived home 5 minutes ago, I found that my car wouldn't start. And John is in Brighton on business.
M: Do you know what's wrong with the car?
W: I'm not exactly sure. I think there's a problem with the engine. Er, I wonder if you could give me a ride to the hotel tomorrow morning.
M: Sure, when shall I be at your place?
W: Well, what about 8 o'clock? From my place to Shelton we have to drive through the quarters, so we'd better leave early to avoid the traffic.
M: OK, no problem. It takes 20 minutes to reach your place, so I'll set off at 7:40. By the way, do you also need me to drive you home tomorrow afternoon?
W: No. John would be back then and he'll get me home. Thank you, Michael.
M: That's OK. See you tomorrow.
M: Hi, Nancy! You look worried. What's wrong?
W: Well, Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage?
M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago? I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.
W: That's how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.
M: I didn't know you made it to the finals.
W: I'm worried I'll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don't know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you're not going to forget how to spell your name. I'll help you get through this.I'll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I'll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.
