M: You used to run in the park. Why do you go hiking in the mountains regularly now?

W: Climbing keeps my legs in shape and the long walk makes my heart healthy. You should try that.

W: How time flies! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your staying with us. You're the perfect boarder.

M: And you're the perfect hostess, Mrs. Green. Thanks for everything you did. You really made me feel right at home.

M: When do you start to serve lunch?

W: At 11:00, sir.

M: Oh, there are still 20 minutes left.

W: Are those clothes on your sofa clean?

M: Actually most of them are dirty. I haven't done the washing for a while. I usually wait until the weekend and do it at my parents' house.

W: My sister and I usually have the washing done at the cleaner's down the street. Why don't you go there?

M: Have you thought of moving, Sarah? The community you live in is too far away from your office.

W: I've thought about it since I can afford it. But the environment and people here are so nice that I don't want to move now.

W: Do you still remember what my first word was?

M: I remember your brother's first word.

W: I see. I'm the younger of two children. Clearly I am not the child who attracts much attention because the first one is the most interesting one. Then what did my brother say?

M: His first word was "hi". I don't remember your first word, but once you started speaking, you never stopped. It is probably "mama".

W: Well, you are still a good parent even though you don't remember that. My first word was "papa".

M: Hi, Helen. Got any plans after class?

W: We will have our midterm exams next month. I plan to look for some important books and prepare for the exams at the library. Do you want to join me?

M: Sure. I need to return books. They are due today. Besides, I can read magazines.

W: Great. We can meet in front of the library then. After studying, we can go to the swimming pool in the gymnasium.

M: That sounds like a good idea. It's a wonderful way to get relaxation in such a hot summer. Are you good at swimming?

W: Well, I haven't swum for almost two years. I think I need some practice.

M: Oh, it's almost 9. I need to hurry. I am running late. See you after class.

W: See you then.

M: Jenny, you said that you grew up in a small town and had a very rural life, but then you moved overseas to Italy, right?

W: Yes. I moved to Bologna. It's in Italy.

M: Wow! That's such a huge shift! Why did you move to Italy?

W: Oh, I moved to Italy because I planned to study abroad during my junior year at university. And I was to take a program at the University of Bologna.

M: So, what is the most challenging thing for you living there?

W: The most challenging thing for me may be my accommodations there, because I had to find appropriate housing. In my country, I had always lived in the dorm at my university.

M: Well, what's the difference between life in Italy and life in your country?

W: Life in Italy feels so much slower, but people are still very productive and enthusiastic. They know how important it is to enjoy their time with family and friends. But in my country, people are working to a tight schedule.

M: I can relate to that. I was in Spain for about two months and I felt the same. By the way, I am thinking of going to Italy so can you give me some tips?

W: Of course.

M: So, you've talked a lot about things we should do, but what about stopping doing unhealthy things or breaking bad habits? That's the hardest thing, right? What's your advice for people living an unhealthy lifestyle?

W: Well, I am not suggesting that people fight with themselves, and that they avoid or break anything. Instead of taking away the bad, you should add something good. You can find exciting, fun, new habits that will naturally replace bad ones.

M: Okay, let's say you watch too much TV, or you're addicted to your smartphone. You should try to maybe play outside or do something like that.

W: Well, you can try a lot of new things and see what works for you. One of the things that I discovered for myself is that willpower does have a limit, so we need to use it very carefully for short distances. It's not for marathons.

M: What do you mean?

W: When you're forming a new habit that you feel it is the right habit for you, you need to use willpower to repeat it enough times. Usually you need to stick with it for 21 days.

M: Really? Why 21 days?

W: I saw that it works in my own practice.

M: Got it. Thanks for your time.

As the saying goes, "You must love yourself first before you can love someone else." Similarly, I personally believe that you must feel relaxed and happy in your own company before you can truly be yourself in the company of others and enjoy that. There is a massive difference between being lonely and being alone. Loneliness is a horrible feeling. However, you don't have to actually be alone to feel that way. Many times, I've felt lonely when surrounded by a big group of people. In contrast, being alone can actually be a blessing, particularly when you actively choose it. In my experience, being bored and alone is dangerous and can easily lead to the feeling of loneliness. The trick which can help you step away from the state is to be active. Go outside, stretch your legs, buy yourself something tasty to eat or something pretty to wear. Spending time alone allows you to take care of problems more effectively. And then, when it's time to meet up with your friends, you will be fully there, because you won't have too many other things floating around in your mind. Having been alone for a bit, you will also appreciate your friends' company more and you may feel spending your time with friends is more worthwhile.
