M: I've packed our bag.

W: Great. Let me check the list. The umbrella, the camera, the book... Where is the towel?

M: Oh, I forgot that.

W: Good morning. I want to buy an adult ticket. How much is it?

M: The original price is 50 dollars, but now we're offering a 20% discount.

M: A new building is going up on Spring Street. It will replace the old department store. I guess it might be a hospital.

W: I read in the paper that it's an office building.

W: Would you like to try some of this cake? It's delicious.

M: Thank you, but the doctor said I should cut down on desserts. I've stopped eating desserts though I'm fond of them.

W: I lost my identity card and I will make a trip to Beijing next Monday. What should I do?

M: Sorry to hear that. But you are supposed to go to the police station instead of the travel firm.

W: Thank you.

W: Hi, Jack. We're going camping this weekend. What do you prepare for the camping?

M: I've bought some sleeping bags and a tent. Besides, Bob is going with us, and he has prepared a map for us.

W: Good. I think we also need a flashlight.

M: OK, I'll buy one tomorrow.

W: Since we are camping for the first time, I'm afraid that we might forget something. Susie often goes camping. We can consult her.

M: Good idea.

M: Hello, this is Daniel speaking. Is that Lucy?

W: Yes. How is everything going, Daniel?

M: Not very well. I've got a cold and coughed a lot. The doctor told me it's best to stay at home. That is why I'm calling you.

W: But we've made an appointment to play tennis this afternoon. I have booked a tennis court.

M: I know, but I'm afraid that I really can't make it.

It is warm now, but the forecast calls for a sharp drop in temperature this afternoon.

W: Really?

M: Yes. I don't want my condition to worsen, because there is an important exam tomorrow. I'm terribly sorry, Lucy.

W: Well, never mind. I hope you will recover soon.

M: We're going on a boat trip this afternoon. I can't wait!

W: Neither can I. Do you think we'll see whales today? Cindy told me she didn't see any whale on her boat trip in autumn, so I think it really depends on luck.

M: Well, I think we should have better luck, because this is the best time of the year to see whales.

W: Why is winter the best time of the year to see whales?

M: At this time of year, the whales are heading south from Alaskan waters to warmer water to winter there. Then they'll return to Alaska before summer.

W: So we can see lots of whales traveling at this particular point. By the way, do you know when the boat returns?

M: The boat leaves at one o'clock and returns at about three o'clock.

W: OK. See you this afternoon.

M: Your work arrangements are flexible. Do your children disturb you while you are working from home?

W: No, but I find I feel lonely at times. I tried to work in the library but found I wasn't really fond of working there.

M: Me either. The library is a bit too quiet, which leads to my lack of inspiration, although it usually provides free Wi-Fi and sells meals.

W: I've found the same thing. So, lately, I've been going out to cafes. I love the noise, the people, and the busyness of a cafe.

M: Cafes seem to have become a comfortable place for so many people in this digital age. But I'm not sure how cafe owners feel about it — having so many people who go there to work rather than drink and eat.

W: Yes, some people seem to spend a lot of time there but  order very little. The most annoying thing for cafe owners must be this: only two people occupy a table for six with their computers and paperwork.

M: I agree with you. Also, some people plug their computers into a power adapter, which easily makes others fall over the wires.

W: It's a double-edged sword for a cafe owner. While remote workers help to keep the cafe full in quiet times, they also take up valuable tables at busy periods.

M: King George Ⅵ said, "The history of York is the history of England." York was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. The Romans also lived in it and ruled it for the next three centuries, turning it into a city of global importance.  The Viking occupation of York took place in 866 AD. The Vikings farmed the land and were great traders, artists, engineers and shipbuilders. Over the years when York was under the Vikings' rule, the city developed in a successful way.  The Middle Ages is an important period in York's history, as many of the city's landmarks were built within this period.

There're buildings of the Middle Ages, impressive Georgian townhouses and a Victorian railway station. As you explore York you will discover that every aspect of York's modern life is closely linked with its past. You can't miss the Shambles, as it's one of the most recognized historic streets in England.

York is between London and Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. You can take a train from London to York or take a bus from London to go through Cambridge to York. Come and find out more about York's history!
