W: Have you seen the movie The Departed? The plot was so complicated that I really got lost.

M: Yeah, I felt the same. But after I saw it a second time, I could piece the events together.

W: John hasn't taken part in the discussion today. Where is he?

M: Oh, he just called me. He is stuck on the way because of the concert at the Central Stadium.

M: Oh, this painting is amazing! It's so lifelike. Just look at the sky and the sea, and you'll find it's a work of a talent.

W: Yeah. I can't agree more. It's outstanding in this gallery.

M: I'm playing volleyball after school. Do you want to join me?

W: Sorry, I can't. I have to do tennis practice today and tomorrow. How about this weekend?

M: Oh, I'd like to, but my younger brother has a baseball competition then.

M: I bought this suit yesterday but it's too small. I'd like to give it back.

W: No problem, sir. You also bought a shirt yesterday. What about the shirt?

M: I'll keep it.

W: Hi, Todd! This is Gayle Harper. Do you still remember me?

M: Hi, Gayle. Of course, I do. You were our class monitor in high school.

W: Right! We're organizing an event for our class. It's a chance for all of us to get together again. We can recall  old times and talk about what's happening in our lives now. Would you be interested in attending?

M: Count me in! When will it be held?

W: In March. If you give me your email address, I'll send you more information.

M: OK. Thanks!

W: Do you still have the flat with three bedrooms, Mr. White?

M: Yes, madam. But we only have one now, and it's on the top floor. Shall we go and see it?

W: Well, I don't like climbing too many stairs in case of power cuts.

M: How many people are there in your family?

W: Four. My husband and our two daughters.

M: Then you can buy one with two bedrooms. There are several such flats available. You and your husband live in one bedroom and your daughters share the other.

W: That sounds like a good idea. Show me one on a lower floor, please. If it's suitable, I'll phone my husband to pay for it.

W: Do you have to work at the weekend?

M: Oh, yes, that's our busiest time. Many people come here for dinner at the weekend. I have Wednesdays off.

W: What do you do at work? Are you the waiter?

M: No, I cook for customers and I have to keep everything in the kitchen totally clean. But I don't have to do the washing-up.

W: What is the hardest part of the job?

M: It is very difficult to satisfy everybody's taste.

W: I agree. How did you prepare for the profession?

M: Well, I did a two-year course at college. In the first year we had to learn the basics, and then we had to take exams and practice cooking in the restaurant.

W: What's the secret of being good at your job?

M: Keeping an eye on every detail. Of course, you also have to love it.

M: So, what did you think of the first Spanish class?

W: Pretty good. I hope I'll be able to speak Spanish authentically by the end of the term.

M: I bet you'll have no problems. After all, you can speak both Chinese and English without an accent. When I tried to learn German in high school and talk with others in German, people could barely understand my words. I had even lived there for three months when I was 17, but I always sounded like an American.

W: Well, I moved to America when I was 7, so I had many years to practice. To be honest, it has been a much bigger challenge to remember my mother tongue. I used to watch Chinese movies to keep myself familiar with it.

M: Can you still read Chinese?

W: My mom tried to get me to read Chinese books, but it was a lost cause. If I ever have more free time, it's the thing I want to learn again.

M: I found that recording my talk really helped me when I learned German. I would highly recommend it to all language learners.

W: That's an interesting way to learn a language. By the way, do you have friends in Germany?

M: No. I learned German because I always wanted to see the castles and the Black Forest there. Anyway, this time I really need it for my current career.

W: I'm Rachel from the University of Chicago. When I was a little girl, I noticed that though many adults around me were wealthy and educated, they were not happy, which sometimes led them to behave in strange ways. As a result, I wanted to find out what happiness is and how to achieve it, so I decided to study psychology. 

When I was at university, I tried to discover what makes people happy. I started by studying people who are full of creation such as musicians, artists and actors, because they are people who devote their lives to doing what they want to do, rather than things that bring them money. Later I expanded the study by inventing a system called the "experience examining method" and made ordinary people the subjects. The result is in agreement with my previous study on creative people — ordinary people are happiest when giving all their attention to something as well.

From these studies I found that the most obvious cause of happiness is concentration. I have spent my life in studying happiness and now, as I look back, I wonder if I have achieved it. Overall, I think I have, and my belief that I have found the key to happiness has increased my own happiness greatly.
