Text 1
M: How was the exam?
W:Not too bad. I think I passed English and math. How about you?
M:I think I failed the history test. It was too difficult for me.
W:Yeah. The history test was awful.
Text 2
W:Hi, Paul! Good to see you walking around the neighborhood. Are you on the way to the grocery store?
M:Actually, I'm looking for Tina. Did you see her go by here?
W:Yes, I saw her at the cleaner's about half an hour ago. She said she was on her way to the gym.
Text 3
M: I don't remember it being this small. I had the impression that the room was a lot bigger.
W:So did I. But it'll be OK once we get the furniture out.
Text 4
M: Ouch, it really hurts terribly here, because I fell over heavily just now.
W:I think you need an X-ray. Shall I help you go to the hospital?
M:No, thanks.
Text 5
W:This is really your friend's band? They sound so professional!
M:They're just starting out, but they got a really good guy to help them with the album.
W:They should thank him. This album sounds great.
Text 6
M:I can't make my appointment and need to make another one.
W: That's OK. We can make a new schedule for it if you tell me what day works for you.
M: Friday, Saturday, or Sunday would be good for me.
W: I can give you Friday; would you prefer ten or eleven?
M: Ten o'clock is perfect.
W: Well, in that case, I'll just write you in.
M: Thanks. That will work out well.
W: It's my pleasure to have been able to make it work.
Text 7
M: Oh dear, I suppose it's time to start thinking about the summer holidays again. The papers are full of travel articles.
W:They always are at this time of year. Do you have somewhere in mind?
M:I just think it would be nice to go somewhere different, for example, Tibet.
W:Where? Tibet? But it's quite far away. It will cost a lot.
M:But I'd like to go somewhere out-of-the-way. Somewhere where there aren't many tourists. I haven't been to Tibet, but some people I know told me it's a wonderful place for a holiday.
W:You might have trouble with the food and water.
M:Oh, that won't be a problem. I can get some information from the travel agency and see what they are offering. Are you coming with me?
W:I'd be quite happy to stay at home and work in the garden. I want to build a path.
Text 8
W:Do you keep in touch with your aunt in America?
M:Sure, I usually call her once a month.
W:That sounds kind of expensive.
M:Yeah, a little, I guess.
W:Do you ever have the desire to chat online?
M:Sure. But my aunt is a little older and not really into using the computer.
W:But surely she would want to save a little money. You said she has kids. They must have a computer in the house. You could get one of her kids to teach her how to use the Internet.
M:Yeah, I guess I never really thought about it. I kind of like hearing the sound of her voice. It feels a little closer and more personal.
W:Yeah, I understand. I like hearing my parents' voices too, but I don't feel that I need to hear them every time we talk.
M:Hmm. Maybe I will get her kids to help. It's a good idea.
Text 9
M: Hello, Julia. Have you heard about the chess match?
W:Not yet, anything special?
M:Well, I suppose you would never be able to guess who came out first.
W:Was it Carl, or David? These two are very competitive.
M:I'm afraid you got the wrong ones. The champion was John. It was a real surprise to everybody. He beat 12 other players, lost only 3, and played no draws.
W:John is lucky. How about Carl and David?
M:Well, Carl only played seventh, and David was better. He played fifth.
W:Anyway, I'm still wondering how John could be so successful.
M:I don't know, either. But I heard that both Carl and David were suffering from the flu at that time.
Text 10
Our eating habits are very important for keeping healthy and having a strong body. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice cream than meat and rice. Sweets are not bad for the stomach if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they will take away our appetite. It is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow the bread, it was a sign that he was telling lies.
