M:Where are we now? I can't tell what road this is.
W:We're heading for the U.S.,but we're still in Canada. And we're quite a long distance from Mexico.
Text 2
W:What a fine day! Shall we go hiking this early spring morning?
M:Mom won't let us.We have to take care of little Jenny after we finish our homework.
Text 3
W:That's an excellent meal.$40 per person is really cheap, isn't it?
M:You're forgetting the two beers we had, which are$20.
Text 4
W:I need to return these books today. Do you want to come with me?
M:No.The downtown library doesn't even open on Sundays. I'd rather go tomorrow so I can borrow some new books for myself.
Text 5
W:Do you walk to your workplace often?
M:No,I go to work by bus and sometimes I take the train for some meetings in other cities.
Text 6
W:Hi, Mark, you look pale today. What's wrong with you?
M:Well,I've just finished a small operation.
W:Oh, I am sorry to hear that. Do you feel better now?
M:Much better. I've taken the medicine which the doctor asked.
W:You had better mind your own health next time.
M:I think I am lucky. I went to the North Wall Hospital.
W:Oh, that is a good one. How do you know that hospital?
M:The ads of course.
W:Got it. I have seen their ads many times.
M:I think the ads really help a lot.

M:The summer holiday is coming. The holidays here are very long.
W:How do you want to spend your holiday?
M:I haven't decided yet. What about you?
W:I'll work at the supermarket, where I worked for two months last summer.
M:I'm a foreign student, so I don't think I can get a job as easily as you can.
W:Well, I know a restaurant manager. He might want to hire you as a waiter. But they usually don't pay very well.
M:How much pay for each hour?
W:About$4 an hour for eight hours a day.
M:It's low, but that's all right.

W:Hello, Dan. I am sorry to hear that you had an accident last week. How did it happen?
M:Well, I was riding on my bicycle along the street when a taxi driver suddenly made a sharp turn in front of me. I could not stop my bicycle in time and I was knocked down.
W:Were you seriously hurt?
M:No, I only got a broken arm and a broken leg.The doctor said that I would have to stay in hospital for at least a week.
W:Do your arm and leg hurt now?
M:Yes, my leg hurts badly, but I can bear the pain. The only thing that I'm worried about is my classes. You know, our teacher said next week we would have our midterm exam.
W:Well, don't worry about the exam. I can help you.
M:Thank you, but I don't really want to stay here that long. Anyway, thank you for coming to see me.

W:What kind of house shall we rent?
M:It should be close to our office building. You know we aren't used to getting up early and the closer it is, the later we can get up.
W:Of course. That is the most important thing to consider.
M:How about the size?
W:I am not too worried about the size as long as there is enough sunlight in the bedroom.Do you mind if it is in a noisy area?
M:I don't mind. I am not a light sleeper, but a quiet area is better, for we can do our research at home.
W:OK, let's pay more attention to the newspapers.
M:If we are lucky, we will find a flat in the next few days. By the way, how much do you think the rent will be?
W:I have asked the house agent about the price. He said it would be about two hundred pounds a month.
M:Oh, I think the price is reasonable and acceptable.
W:I think so. How I wish we could find a perfect flat quickly, because our present house is too expensive.

Set up in 1636,Harvard University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States.Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth were opened soon after Harvard.
In the early years, these schools were very much alike. Only young men attended college. All the students studied the same subjects and everyone learned Latin and Greek.Science was little known and one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students graduated, most of them became ministers or teachers. In 1782, Harvard started a medical school for young men who wanted to be doctors. Later, lawyers could receive their training at Harvard Law School. In 1825, Harvard began teaching modern languages, such as French and German.
Later, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested them. Special colleges for women were started.New state universities began to teach such subjects as farming, engineering and business.Today, there are many different kinds of colleges and universities. Most of them are divided into smaller schools that deal with special fields of learning.
