Text 1
W:Don’t blame yourself too much. It is too early to start the afternoon class at 1 pm.
M:No, the class has been rescheduled to 2 pm. And I was still 30 minutes late yesterday.
Text 2
M: Hi, I have a table reserved for six, under the name Tom.
W: Er, sorry, but we don't have any reservations under that name.
Text 3
W: Why did the old couple sell their house here?
M: Because they wanted to live somewhere warm. They were tired of the snow all year round.
Text 4
W: Tom's father allows him to play football but the time is within an hour.
M: That's the best news I have heard today. We will have a new player in our team.
Text 5
M:Would you mind my smoking a cigarette here, madam?
W:Sorry, it's too dangerous to do that.
Text 6
W: Do you know if it's possible to get to Los Angeles from San Francisco by train?
M: Yeah, it is.
W: Can you recommend a suitable route?
M: Well, the quickest route is through the centre of California. If you take the train along the coast, it is much more beautiful. By the way, why don't you fly?
W: No way! I hate flying.

M: Come in, please.
W: You wanted to see me, Mr. Strunk?
M: Yes, Lorraine, I did. I'd like to talk to you for a moment. I'm very pleased with your work.
W: Thank you, Mr. Strunk. I like to do my best.
M: I've certainly noticed. You're a very good employee. All your assignments are finished in a timely manner, and you're a team player.
W: Well, Mr. Strunk, I enjoy my work very much.
M: To show that I appreciate all your efforts, I'm going to give you a raise. I hope you don't object.
W: Of course not! Thank you for your vote of confidence.
Text 8
W: What were you doing when the car crash happened?
M: I was cycling home from school with my friend.
W: Were you going fast?
M: I don’t think so. I usually cycle like this and nothing had ever happened.
W: What color were the traffic lights?
M: They had turned green for us.
W: So what do you remember about the accident?
M: The businessman was walking across when his phone rang. He stopped to answer it, I guess. It was still ringing when we were already sitting on the ground.
W: Did you see the car crash?
M: Yes. The driver didn’t stop the car until it was too late. The businessman was knocked over. I fell off my bike and my legs were hurt here, but I was worried about the businessman. He was unconscious when the ambulance came.
Text 9
W: Good morning, what's the problem?
M: I feel terrible. I feel tired all the time...and I have a headache.
W: How long have you felt like this?
M: Oh...for a few weeks.
W: Do you do much exercise?
M: Er...I walk to school. That's about it.
W: What about sleeping? Do you sleep well?
M: No, not really. I wake up a lot at night.
W: Why do you often wake up?
M: Well, I worry about my schoolwork. I'm getting behind and I can't seem to catch up.
W: What time do you usually go to bed?
M: About midnight on weekdays and later on the weekend.
W: I see. And do you drink anything before you go to bed?
M: Yes. I have a cup of coffee. And I'm always hungry in the evening. I usually have something to eat before I go to bed.

My name is Christine and I teach in a secondary school. I enjoy being a teacher. I enjoy the unexpected things that I can’t plan for. When I was at college, I thought the only thing that the teachers kept on about was planning lessons, and I used to make these lesson plans up and they always seemed like the great works of modern fiction to me, because real lessons aren’t like that. The plans don’t always work out the way you plan them. What makes it really interesting is that you just go in, thinking you’re going to do thing A and it turns into thing B, depending on the state of the students. And I enjoy my job also because students are terribly entertaining. And they come out with all these amazing things. You will find that what you’re teaching them in English is much less important than what you’re teaching them about "the big world", relationships, values and things like that. I think the only downside is that it’s terribly hard work and it’s awfully tiring physically — and emotionally at times. But children are just such nice people. You can turn them into anything you want if you treat them well and you can develop appropriate relationships with them. Then there’s very little that they can’t learn and can’t do, so a good teacher can take children into a whole world which is magic and exciting.
