M: Lily, there you are! I just walked up to a complete stranger and gave her a hug, because I thought it was you. It was so awkward.
W: I've done that before, too. It's the worst feeling in the world, isn't it?

M: Do you think I should study abroad in Spain or in Italy next spring and summer?
W: Are you trying to learn either language?
M: Well, I'd like to improve my Spanish. But there's a physics program in Italy that I'm interested in.
W: Spanish and Italian are similar. If you know some Spanish already, it should be easier for you to pick up Italian.
M: Yeah, I think I'm going to choose Italy. Maybe I'll even stay for a year. I will miss England, but it's a good opportunity. I'll be studying under a famous scientist, too.
W: I wouldn't miss the chance, either. I'm trying to get into a medical program at Oxford right now.

W: It's no problem.
M: I'm glad we met at the conference. Maybe we can meet up again when I get back from the rainforest in Brazil.
W: Sure. I'd like to hear how it went. It's good that you'll provide medical care for people who don't have any.
M:I think it'll be a great experience. I'm so grateful that your friend Marsha told me about Doctors Without Borders. If she hadn't gone on a similar trip, I wouldn't have had this opportunity.
W: It's something she cares a lot about.
M: Thank her for me, please.
W: I'll be sure to do that. Have a good trip!
M: Thank you.

M: You're listening to Star Chat and my guest today is Jane Smith, the celebrity chef. Jane has been a household name for many years, writing books and delighting TV audiences with her delicious recipes. Jane, welcome to the show.
W: Thank you. It's lovely to be here.
M: So,Jane, can you tell the listeners how you first became interested in cooking?
W: Well, when I was a little girl — as far back as I can remember — I used to watch my mother cooking family meals. My sister and I were fascinated by all the ingredients and how these things could be put together and cooked to make something delicious.
M: And did your mother let you help?
W: Yes, she was very supportive. I suppose when I was little, I must have been very annoying, getting in her way. But she never complained and always encouraged me to have a go. She was a great teacher.
M: I suppose your father was grateful to have two keen chefs in the house. Or was it a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth?
W: No, he always seemed happy with our efforts. But my father influenced my career in a very different way.

M: Why do you wear a mask over your mouth all the time?
W:Don't you smell the smoke in the air today?
M: Yes, I do. Isn't that probably from someone's fireplace?
W: Jared, the smell is all over this town. Can't you see it in the air?
M: I thought it was just fog.
W: Wrong again!
M: What?Is there a forest fire burning nearby?
W:No… it's pretty far away. But it's large, and the smoke from it is covering the whole town. You should stay inside as much as you can. Today, the air pollution reaches the "dangerous" level.
M: Oh, but I was just going to start my run. Do you have an extra mask?
W: Yes, I do. But you shouldn't run today, in my opinion. Running makes you breathe harder and faster, so you'll be damaging your lungs more.
M: All right… I'll wait until the air is less dangerous, then. Back to my original question, though…why are you always wearing a mask, Vicki?
W: Not all the time. But during certain seasons — particularly summer and autumn — pollution gets trapped in this huge valley. So I'm more aware of it.

Now for a heartwarming story about a town legend. Today, over 200 people gathered at Pioneer Park to celebrate Daisy Arnold's 100th birthday.Born here in Maplewood on November 15th, 1918, Daisy is the daughter of the town's first firefighter, John Arnold, and a beloved schoolteacher, Elizabeth. Daisy volunteered as a nurse with the Red Cross during the Second World War in Rome. Afterwards, she followed in her mother's footsteps and taught in a kindergarten until she married and had her first child in 1946. Over the next 15 years, she had 5 more children of her own and adopted 4 others. She devoted her life to kids, directing school plays and teaching field hockey. In 1967, when a fire started in the elementary school, Daisy led all the children to safety and helped put the fire out. She was named a firefighter as an honor that year. She trained to join the force in 1975, at a time when it was very rare for women to be firefighters. We now know Daisy as a local famous person because of her popular radio show. During the show she shares stories of her life. She'll celebrate her 100th birthday with a trip to Las Vegas. Happy Birthday, Daisy!
