M: Ah, not very often. You know I'm very busy.

W: Good morning, Mr. Wang, I have some trouble in learning English. Could you give me some advice?
M: Sure.
W: I’ve spent a lot of time on English, but my English is still very poor.
M: Oh. How do you usually study English?
W: I read texts, remember words and grammar rules.
M: Don’t you do any exercises?
W: Seldom. I have no time for it.
M: OK. You’d better learn English through exercises. Also, you can try to read some English novels or watch English movies.

W: Hey, Mike. What are you doing this summer?
M: I'm not sure. What about you?
W: I'm going to Chicago for a six-week job at a theater company.
M: That's great, Wendy! I don't know you are interested in acting.
W: I'm not. I want to be a stage director. Have you decided what you're going to study in college?
M: Not really, but I am thinking about studying creative writing in Boston or New York.
W: Is that what you want to be, a storyteller?
M: No, but I figure it would be a pretty easy subject to major in.
W: That's not a good way to plan your future.
M: You think so? I figure that, at worst, I'll only waste four years of my life.
W: I sincerely hope that you are joking. What about music? You've got such a gift.
M: Thank you, but I feel like music is something I can always pick up again later.
W: It's your life, but I hope you don't waste your talent.
M: Well, you've always been a gifted student, and you're good at everything you do. It's easy for you.
W: If you saw how much time and effort I put in to be a good student, you would know that it's no gift.

W: OK. Anything else?
M: No, that's all. Thank you. Hey, dear, my company is organizing a football team and I'd like to join it very much. What do you think of it?
W: To be honest, you'd better not.
M: Why? After all, I was a good football player in university.
W: Hmm! That was ten years ago. And it has been at least six years since you played it last time.
M: You mean I should give it up?
W: Well, you've put on weight and you are in poor health now, so at least you should have a physical examination before you begin.
M: Well, OK.
W: And you should change your diet, reduce fatty foods and eat more fruit and vegetables. Also do more exercise from now on.
M: Yeah, you're right.
Text 10
One year Miss Sophia decided to have a holiday in Italy. She did not speak much Italian, but wherever she was, she was fortunate enough to find people who knew enough English to be able to understand what she wanted, until one day she decided to have lunch in a little restaurant in a village in the south of Italy.
She had seen some nice mushrooms in the market of another village near there and thought they would taste very good. So when the waiter came to take her order for lunch, she asked whether she could have some mushrooms for her meal. But she had great difficulty in explaining to him, because she did not know the Italian word for "mushroom".
At last she took out a pencil and drew a picture of a mushroom. The waiter's face brightened at once, and he hurried to the kitchen. A minute later, he returned, carrying an umbrella.
