M: They just need to think outside the box.The sports store near the school has now opened a gym on the second floor.  

W: That’s smart, so people buy sportswear and equipment and then use it.

W: Have you ever had dreams that you can remember?

M: Yes. It’s funny that you should mention that. At most nights I dream about football. That was what I dreamed about this Monday and Tuesday —but on Wednesday it was something completely different.  

W: What was that?  

M:  I dreamed I was an astronaut, landing on Mars.  

W: That must have been fun.

M: It was, but it was also scary. I had to depend on all the technology created by scientists and computer people. I had to trust them, because my life depended on it.

W: And did you?

M: Yes, that was why I was there on Mars — but it was something I had never thought of before. I had to be sure they had done their jobs properly.

W: We have a science lesson this morning. You can tell our teacher about your dream.  

M: Maybe.Now I can’t stop thinking what an important job scientists do.  

W: That’s what I want to do for a living.   I suppose you want to be an astronaut, do you?

M: I did before I had that dream. But now  I’m not so sure.

W: We all know that seeing someone perform an act of kindness can warm your heart. It is a feeling most people have.Now scientists have proved that kindness really is infectious.  

Here is what was done. Scientists first found 104 college students.They were then asked to watch videos.   These videos showed either heroic acts of kindness or humorous situations. Their brain activity and heart rates were measured during the experiment.

The researchers got the results. When the students were viewing the heroic acts, activity in the nervous system reached to the highest level. When they were watching the amusing videos, there were no changes in their brain."This is a really uncommon pattern," said Dr. Sarina Saturn, a psychologist at Oregon State University.   This may be because viewing a good action requires us to witness suffering, which brings a stress response and makes the sympathetic nervous system become active. Then, once we see the suffering reduced through an act of kindness, our heart feels calmed and the parasympathetic (副交感神经的) nervous system becomes active.
