M: Hello Camille, what's that you're reading?
W: It is called The Woman in White written by Wilkie Collins.
M: Oh, is it inspired by an actual criminal case like his The Moonstone?
W: Well sort of, but in this novel, the person who investigates is not a policeman like Sergeant Cuff. He is an old teacher. M: Sounds exciting. Can I borrow it after you finish it?
W: Sure, it may take me a while though because it is in a French version, and I have to read slowly.

M: Yes, but humans aren't built to live in space and being there can bring serious health risks. W: Well, what are the alternatives?
M: Instead of sending people we can send robots equipped with cameras and other tools to do observations for us. What do you think?
W: I believe robots and computers can never replace human experience. Exploration is about taking risks. Without risks, we cannot learn anything new.

M: I don't like my Chinese friends calling me Laowai. It makes me feel that I am not one of them.
W: Actually, Chinese people want to treat you as one of them for peers and colleagues. “Lao” conveys a certain degree of warmth. Laowang, Laoli and Laowu all express this point by placing “Lao” in front of a surname.
M: Well, Chinese people are friendly, but occasionally some people tend to be overly enthusiastic. I was reading a newspaper in the subway one time and a person suddenly poked his head over my shoulder and helped himself to my paper.
W: Aha, this is Chinese hospitality. I had a similar experience, too. I always feel spoiled to be the guest in a Chinese household. The host would keep putting food on my plate despite the fact that I may not like certain food.

M: Yes, I'd like to do that. Do you know what's on at the Paramount Theatre?
W: Let me have a look. Theatres, um oh, there's a new production of Romeo and Juliet.
M: I'm not sure that I feel like sitting through four hours of Shakespeare. What else is there?
W: There's a new play called The Head of the Snake that's on at The Riverside Theatre.
M: What's that about?
W: I can't remember, but it's had good reviews.
M: Nice, I hope it will be as good as Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park.
W: Well, I see. It's only on for two more weeks. I'll call up the website theatre now to confirm availability and buy tickets from the theatre box office only a few subway stops away.

My name is Erene Gerrard, and I'm here to tell you about a teacher who breathed belief into students who may not have believed in themselves, including me. Legendary journalist Dan Rather once said his dream began with a teacher who believed in him, who pushed him and led him to the next high altitude. These words rang very true for me. When I joined the newspaper staff as a freshman, our journalism advisor was Richard Genee. As a teacher, Mr. Genee had an extraordinary gift for reaching his students. He was always related to his students in such a way that it felt as though we were speaking with a trusted friend rather than someone who determined our grades. When I attempted to give up my editor position because of the merciless criticism from other staff members, Mr. Genee refused. His words echoed inside my head once again, “You don't get to give up”. Today, I'm blessed to be a published author with several best-selling books to my credit. How wonderful it is to be able to express my overwhelming gratitude to Mr. Genee—whose advice put me on the path that I walk all these years later.
