M: Oh, hello. I'm interested in the holidays you offer along the coast near here.
W: Yes. We operate several tours up the coast. Where in particular do you want to go?
M: Well, I like the one mentioning whales. Is it“whale watching”?
W: Oh, yes. That's our Whale Watch Experience. It's very popular and it's based in a lovely little town with nice beaches.
M: All right, will trained personnel accompany us?
W: Of course, all the staff there are specifically trained for any possible emergency.
M: Good. So do we travel by coach?

W: Let's have a look. So, what's this group“Guitar masters”?
M: This Spanish band is really good. I almost enjoyed every song of the band. They play fantastic instruments and I've never heard anything like it before.
W: Sounds great. Shall we go then?
M: Yes! The only problem is that there aren't any cheap seats...it's all one price.
W: Well, in that case we could sit right at the front. We can have a really good view.
M: Maybe, though I think if you sit at the back, you can actually hear the whole thing better.

M: How about the 17th of June? Or the 22nd of June?
W: I prefer the latter one.

M: Interesting. Who is the uploader?
W: It's“Lily on the way”, who enjoys sharing videos on different customs during travel.
M: I know her. She has millions of followers.
W: Yeah. Her latest video talks about the British personality, you know, the famous British “reserve”.
M: Hahaha! I see. It just means we aren't very friendly or very open. So do you think it's true?
W: It's hard to say. But Lily says Britons are too shy to make friends with others.
M: Look at Americans. We speak the same language, but they're much more open. When Americans travel, they speak with strangers often on the train. British people seldom do that. Not in London, anyway.
W: People may be different in other parts of your country.
M: Not completely. You know what they say—an Englishman's home is his castle. It's really difficult to get inside.
W: Yeah. Lily also mentions it, being private. You go home to your house and your garden and you close the door. It's your place.
M: That's why the British don't like flats. They prefer to live in houses.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在你有 15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
M: Kites may date back as far as 3,000 years. About 25 centuries ago, kites were well-known in China. These first kites were probably made of wood. They may even have been covered with silk. Early kites were built for certain uses. In ancient China, they were used to carry ropes to cross rivers. It's said that one general flew musical kites over the enemy's camp. The enemy fled out of great fear. In the 13th century, as Marco Polo wrote in his book, a trader named Adam Smith tied some armed soldiers to a huge kite and launched the kite with wind. By the 15th century, many people flew kites in Europe. Marco Polo may have brought the kite back from his visit to China. In late 1500s, kite-flying was first mentioned in England in a popular book by John Bate.

M: That's where you're making a mistake. You can't just guess people's likes or sizes. On top of that, I think you should get your mom something that shows how much you love her. At the same time, you should show her that you took the time and effort to look for something that she would really like.
W: Yeah, you're right.

M: You don't have to starve yourself to lose weight.
W: Why?
M: You should try not to eat foods high in calories.Stay away from oily food.
W: So you're saying that I should eat,but I should just watch what I eat, right?

W: Take care of your plants! They may “scream” if you treat them badly. Although this is an exaggeration, plants can make sounds when they are stressed, according to an article published in a magazine Cell.“Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these insects and animals use sounds for communication, so it would be very inconvenient for plants not to use sounds at all,” Lilach Hadany told Science Focus. With this in mind, the research team started by recording plants' sounds. They divided the plants into three groups. One group wasn't watered for five days. Another group had the stems cut off and the last group remained untouched. The microphones caught sounds at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz from the first two groups. The sound grew louder and louder during the five days of water stress. They then began to decline as the plants dried out. The researchers haven't yet discovered how the sounds are made. After the experiment, the team gathered the data and made software that could tell how plants “feel”. It could be useful for farmers in monitoring the conditions of their crops.

W: Many of us donate old clothes to charity shops, but do you know that most aren't sold? According to The Guardian, only about 20% are sold. The rest are packed and sent abroad, often to places like Ghana, either for resale or to be thrown away. In Ghana's capital, Accra, there is a huge secondhand clothing market called Kantamanto. It's one of the biggest markets in the world. Every week, this market receives around 20 million pieces of used clothing. Unfortunately, about 40% of these clothes end up as waste. Workers either burn this waste or bury it underground, but since Accra is close to the sea and doesn't have enough space for landfills, a lot of waste ends up on the beaches and in the water. This is a big problem for the environment. Clothing waste harms sea life. Sea birds might mistake parts of old clothes for food, and fish often get caught in old clothes, preventing them from growing properly. This also hurts the local economy. Fishermen find it harder to catch fish because their nets often bring up clothes instead.

W: Really? Have you looked in the drawer? There are usually lots of pens in there.
M: Which drawer?
W: The drawer in the desk next to the computer.
M: I thought they were kept in the cupboard at reception.
W: No, we moved them about six weeks ago. I'll check it, and bring some to you.

M: The tourism business is losing money, so we need to cut costs. (9)What do you think we should do?
W: The best way to save money is to make some staff reductions.
M: I don't like that idea. It will make the remaining staff unhappy. They may become more unproductive.
W: I disagree. They may work harder. They will be worried about losing their jobs too.
M: I think we could stop supplying free snacks and coffee and stop the free gym membership.
W: I don't think that will save us much money.

W: Hi, everybody. This week we have the British film director John Grendal. Welcome to the show, John.
M: Thanks.
W: Now, you've been in the US for the last five years. Is that right?
M: Yeah. I came here when I was 28.
W: What made you choose to live in the States?
M: Well, work really, I had a quite successful career in London, making TV commercials and short films, but I really wanted to get into feature films. Luckily some American directors saw my work and invited me over.
W: You've made three feature films here now. How does filmmaking here compare to Britain?
M: It's not that different, really. But there's a lot more money involved. And I love the sunny weather here because it means we can do a lot of filming outside. That's something new for me because it was always cloudy in England so we didn't use to do much outdoors.

W: I think overall, yes. Mind you, there is still room for improvement. Let's see, the overall exam result was encouraging — sixty percent.
M: Yes, and history. I remember a bad report for this last year.
W: Well, he lacks concentration in the class and of course this makes it difficult to remember things like dates and names.
M: I'll have a word with him. And music?
W: Is he still having guitar lessons?
M: Yes.
W: His music teacher has commented that he doesn't take them seriously.
M: And I've noticed that he hasn't been very interested in practicing at home.
W: And also he tends to talk a lot in class — and he only got forty percent. But, there has been considerable improvement in geography — seventy-four percent.
M: Yes, I remember him working at home a lot for a project about China.
W: Yes. And it was excellent. I saw it myself and was very impressed. And now French. It seems that he is really keen on speaking a foreign language! Eighty percent is a very good mark!

M: Hello, my name is Franco and I'm a third-year university student. Today, I'm going to give you some guidance on choosing a university. When I first started looking at universities, like you, I was in my last year of high school. I thought my parents would focus on course fees or the accommodation that the university can offer you. But it was the location of the university that bothered them most. Then I revised my list after hearing their advice. All universities hold open days. You get to meet various people, tutors and students of course, and you can ask any question you like. I found social program officers the most useful to know what it would be like to be a student here. Once you know which university to go, you must read the course introduction. More importantly, you have to study the unit guide to get the details. Think carefully about money. You need to add up the course fees and the cost of course materials. Then check out the cost of living of the city. OK. We still have time for questions.

W: Children in the Indonesian city of Bogor are cleaning up a local lake on their own. They remove the trash from the water and place it in their boats. Later, on land, all the trash is examined and dealt with. It began with a boy. 10 years ago, Giri Marhara decided to start cleaning up the lake. He was just 16 years old at the time and had a habit of cleaning up his environment. Young people like Marhara have been at the forefront of environmental and climate change movements in recent years. Movements like school events for climate action, protests at United Nations climate talks, and local cleanups have often been youth-led. The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry said the country produced more than 35 million tons of waste last year. It was estimated that 35 percent of waste in the country was not managed. Some types of plastic can be recycled. But environmentalists also say the world needs to make less waste in the first place, as much of it ends up in landfills or in the world's oceans. Marhara believes that lasting change will require ending the behavior that causes trash to be out there in the environment. “I think that the only way is to develop a cleanup culture,” he said.

M: That's only a part of it. I absolutely admire this director. Every play he works on turns out great. I've seen quite a few other plays that he directed. They are really wonderful. By the way, after the play, there is a big party for the actors and their friends. My friend has invited us. Do you want to go?

W: Right in front of the Minneapolis Central Library, a row of green bikes sits parked in a special stand. Each bike is designed with the logo “Nice Ride” — the name of the city's bike-share program.
Nice Ride bikes are a lot like the library books that people come here to borrow. To rent a bike, you simply use your membership card at a Nice Ride bike station. Members can rent one of 1,200 bikes from 138 stations throughout Minnesota's largest city. People use the Nice Ride bikes to go to work, to go out on business, or just to enjoy the city's many bike paths.
The rise of bike-share programs like Nice Ride is encouraging more people than ever to choose biking over driving. Increasing gas prices and concerns about the environment have also gotten people to travel by bike.Bike-share systems are found around the world in cities like London, Paris, Barcelona, and Melbourne. The largest program with 70,000 bikes is in Wuhan, China. To make roads friendlier to non-motorists, the US Department of Transportation has invested more than a billion dollars in cycling in recent years. The money went toward building thousands of miles of on-street bike lanes called green ways.

M: Definitely! First, get a comfortable bike and start at your own pace. Begin with short rides and gradually increase the distance. Next, always wear a helmet for safety. Plus, don't hesitate to explore different routes.
W: Good advice. Do you have a regular cycling route?
M: Yes. Most of the time, I go cycling in the nearby park, and sometimes I ride along the coast or in the mountains.
W: Nice.What's the longest distance you've cycled?50 kilometers?
M: My best record is 3 times that distance.
W: Amazing! I admire your willpower. By the way, I've heard about group rides. Have you ever attended one?
M: Yeah. Group rides are fantastic. I like them. I enjoy meeting fellow cyclists and sharing my experiences with them. And there's a great sense of community. It's all for fun, not for competition.
W: Cycling seems like a great way to stay fit and enjoy the outdoors.
M: It truly is. Give it a shot!

W:For many book writers, artificial intelligence (AI) is a threat to their work and the very idea of creativity. More than 10, 000 writers supported an open letter about the issue from the Authors Guild this summer. The letter urged AI companies not to use copyrighted works without permission or payment. At the same time, AI is a story that can be told, and no longer exists only in science fiction.Helen Phillips is the writer of the book HUM. It tells of a wife and mother who loses her job because of AI. Phillips said there is a hope in AI of gaining all knowledge, but there is a “fear of being replaced by non-human intelligence”. Ryan Doherty is a director at Celadon Books. It recently agreed to publish Fred Lunzker's book Sike, featuring an AI doctor. “We've been seeing more and more about AI in book proposals,” Doherty said. Other AI-related books include Do You Remember Being Born?. It tells of a poet who agrees to work for an AI poetry company. There is also In Our Likeness. It tells about a government worker and a fact-checking program with the power to change facts. Some writers are not just writing about AI. They are also openly working with it. Earlier this year, Stephen Marche used AI to write the short book Death of an Author. Simon Rich worked with the AI program “code-davinci-002” to create I Am Code.
