Text 1

M: How about my fish?

W: It couldn't be better.Cooking is really your field.

Text 2

M: Mark's playing computer games.

W: Should he do that when the final exam is drawing near?

Text 3

W: The fruit is super sweet. And the weather is perfect here in Thailand.

M: I know. Doesn't it seem like everything is better when you are on vacation?

Text 4

M: What do we need at the shop?

W: Well, we've got enough bread, but we need more eggs.

M: What about cheese?

W: No, we've got plenty.

Text 5

W: Bill! Supper is ready. Will you get the children?

M: Where are they?

W: They are playing basketball in front of the library.

Text 6

M: Hello, everyone. Today we invite Professor Sawyer to talk about pandas. Many people like them very much. Professor Sawyer, could you tell us more about them?

W: Of course. There are 1,864 pandas in the wild today. They can be found in the wet forests of western China.

M: What about their eating habits?

W: Pandas like eating bamboo. They usually spend nearly half their day eating bamboo. They like sleeping. They are fat and slow. In the wild, pandas seldom live together. They can live for about 20 years.

M: What is the biggest challenge facing pandas in the wild?

W: Human activities. We turn bamboo forests into cities and farmland. They are in a dangerous situation.

W: Hi! What a surprise to see you here!

M: Oh really, why?

W: I never thought you would cook.

M: Yes.I do cook.I always come here to buy some fruit and vegetables.

W: Really?

M: I attended cooking classes in Beijing. I learned some tips on how to cook Chinese food.I was lucky to have good teachers to teach me how to make nice food.

W: I didn't know that you were a good cook.I like cooking very much but I am not that good.

M: Come on! We can learn from each other.

W: OK.I'll join you.

Text 8

M: Hi, Linda. You look anxious. What's going on?

W: I'm worried about my parents in New York. There was a terrible flood there last night.

M: Take it easy. I'm sure your parents are fine.

W: How can you be so sure? I saw many frightening scenes on TV — broken windows, flooded streets and floating furniture!

M: I know, but nothing serious is reported to have happened so far.

W: But I couldn't reach them this morning because of a sudden power failure in that area!

M: Calm down. Last year, Houston had a terrible storm, and my hometown, Los Angeles, was caught in a big earthquake. The government handled everything successfully, and nobody got hurt.

W:Really? Oh, I feel much better now! Thank you so much.

Text 9

M: Lisa, look at you. You must have lost some weight.

W: You're right, David. I've lost 10 pounds since we saw each other last time. Now I weigh just 100 pounds.

M: Have you been on a diet?

W: No. I had planned to go on a diet. But I read a report on the Internet and it changed my mind. It said that going on a diet isn't a good way to control our weight, and that we should eat healthily and work out in order to lose weight.

M: So you went to a gym, right?

W: Yes. My friend May is a member of a gym. When I told her I wanted to go to a gym, she suggested I go to hers. Now we often work out together.

M: It's good to have someone to work out with.

W: Yes. Now we often encourage each other. David, it seems you've put on some weight. Why not join a gym?

M: I want to, but I'm too busy with my work these days.

Text 10

M: It was on the morning of August 15.Some firemen broke into an apartment to rescue two children who had been left in the apartment alone. One was two-year-old Mary and the other was her five-year-old brother John. They were both locked inside an 18th-floor apartment. Neighbors were woken at five o'clock in the morning by the children's cries. They quickly reported it to the police. The police arrived only to find the door of the apartment locked, so the police got in touch with the firemen. The firemen had to cut their way through the gate to reach the children. Mary and John were then taken care of by their neighbors. The police questioned the neighbors about the children's mother. She was described as an excellent mother and very friendly. It was found out later that she had left at midnight to visit a sick friend. Because it was so late, she hadn't wanted to disturb the neighbors by asking them to look after the children.
