Text 1

W: I'll see you at the theater.

M: Better still if we meet in the Red Lion Bar to have a nice little talk.

Text 2

M: Your daughter has won first prize in the contest? How old is she, Mary?

W: Just 13.

M: Really? Two years older than my son.

Text 3

W: I'm having a party next week. All my good friends in our class are coming. Do you think you can come?

M: I hope I can! But I'll have to ask my mom.

Text 4

M: What did you get for your birthday this year, Catherine?

W: My grandpa gave me a watch, and my sister got me a bicycle. But the coolest gift was from my daddy: a new car!

M: Wow, you're so lucky!

Text 5

W: Where's your computer?

M: I moved it. I was sitting opposite the window and the sun shone in my eyes. So I've moved it into the bedroom.

W: Oh, that will be noisy when you work overtime at night.

Text 6

W: Thanks for inviting me to go birdwatching, Greg.

M: Shh! Don't talk so loud.

W: Why? I haven't seen any birds yet. They can't be scared by our voice.

M: No, only when it is quiet can we listen for their songs. Then we can find them easily.

W: I see. Do you go birdwatching every weekend?

M: No, I go once a month.

W: It's a good way of spending time outdoors.

Text 7

M: Hello, is that Anna? This is Colin.

W: Hi, Colin, how are you?

M: I'm OK but I'm looking for a summer holiday job. I'm wondering if you can help.

W: Are you? My dad needs another assistant in his shop.

M: Working with you? Tell me something about the job.

W: Well, it's full-time, five days a week, during my whole summer holiday. I get four pounds fifty an hour, but at first you'll get four pounds. Some people get five pounds.

M: Perhaps I'll go to see your dad. Where is the shop exactly?

W: It's on Pine Street.

M: Thanks, Anna. Goodbye. Wish me luck!

Text 8

W: Guess what! My mother's decided to go back to school.

M: Why?

W: Well, she always loved art but learned business administration at college, because her parents thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job.

M: So she wants to study art now?

W: Yeah, oil painting. It's been her dream for a long time.

M: It's nice to return to learn what she loves. But, Kate, I still think old age should be about peace and relaxation. Having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.

W: You know, she retired last year. And I'm leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something interesting to do.

M: Well, maybe, if it's what she wants.

Text 9

M: Susan, good evening! Why are you so dressed up?

W: I am on my way out to a New Year's banquet. How do I look? Is my make-up OK?

M: You look great. Your make-up is perfect.

W: Do you think I should wear a different dress? The design of this one is a little plain.

M: No, the one you have on looks pretty, especially with your hair like that.

W: Thanks for saying that. Do you have any ideas which necklace I should wear?

M: With that dress I'd say the white necklace is better than the blue one, even better than the yellow one.

W: Thanks for helping out. What are you doing tonight?

M: Not much, just a house party with some friends.

W: Sounds fun. Anyone I know?

M: Yeah, most of the people are from our office.

W: It's a pity I will miss a good time.

M: Oh, well, there will always be one sometime.

Text 10

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. I'm Jenny Jackson. The weather here in Juárez has become unbearable. With no rain for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of them have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes — if they walk on foot, at least — between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heatwave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited Prof. Torres to our studio this evening.
