Module 6 Eating together
1.W: What would you like to have, sir?
M: Noodles, please.
2.M: Jenny, please tell me the proper way to greet people in the UK.
W: OK. The British say "Hello" or "Nice to meet you" and shake hands when they meet new people.
3.M: I like vegetables very much. I have them every day.
W: Eating vegetables is good for our health. But I like fruit better.
4.W: Hello, Leo. Mr Li's birthday party is coming. Would you like to go with me?
M: Why not? The party is in three days. Let's prepare the gift together.
5.M: Are you cooking lots of different things? You look very busy!
W: Yes, I am! There's some pizza and some cookies, and now I'm making an apple pie and a cake.
M: Daisy, do you like seafood?
W: Yes, of course.
M: Is there anything special you like?
W: Well, I really don't know. I can never remember the names.
M: Okay. Is there any food you don't eat?
W: Well, I don't eat chicken. And I don't like eggs, either. But I like all kinds of fish and vegetables.
M: Then let's look at the menu and see what they've got for us.
M: Hi, Alice. How is it going?
W: Good. I finished all my courses yesterday so I can relax today.
M: Great. Would you like to come to my house? My family is coming over. We are having a party in the back garden. It'll be fun.
W: Thanks, Mike. But it's with your family so you probably don't want other people there.
M: No, really. Don't worry because I'm inviting a few people from our class as well. I'd really like you to come.
W: OK, thanks. That would be great. Is it a special party?
M: Well, my oldest sister has a new baby girl, so it's a bit of a celebration for that.
W: Oh! So I should bring something.
M: It isn't like that. There is no need...
W:Hi, Bill, this is Maria. I went to your home after school but you were not in. Here is the final information about the graduation party. I've booked the restaurant for 6:30 in the evening. You need to get there at around 6:15 so that we'll have time to prepare before the guests arrive at 7 o'clock.
Are you still OK to get the music ready? I think pop music will be better than country music or jazz for the party.
As for food, I know we've talked about serving hot food, but I think people will be happier to have some ice cream after dinner. Betty is bringing cakes and I'm happy to buy some drinks.
If you have any questions, please call me or Mr Black, the restaurant manager, at 6433627. Bye.
M: Different countries have different table manners. In Italy, don't put cheese on the top of your pizza. Never ask for cheese if it's not offered. Don't ask for milk after you have eaten meat. If you eat meat and then drink milk during a meal, your stomach will be uncomfortable. You can ask for a cup of coffee instead.
In America, it's important to arrive on time. Don't circle your plate with your arms because that means you don't like the food. It's not polite to say, "I'm full." Just put the fork and knife across the plate. You'd better not reach across the table for anything. If the thing you want is not at hand, ask the nearest person for help.
