Text 1
W: I’m thinking of going back to school to get another degree. It’s hard to find a job with a degree in literature.
M: Yeah, I can’t agree with you more.

Text 2
W: I could go to the gallery while you go shopping, I suppose. As for the trip to the Palace Museum, I’m not sure if I am interested in that.
M: I know what you mean, but I think it’s the kind of place everyone should visit.

Text 3
W: Sorry, did I wake you up?
M: It doesn’t matter. It was time to get up anyway.
W: I just wanted to let you know the exciting news that our team won first place.

Text 4
W: What’s your problem?
M: Well, recently I’ve been suffering from back pain.
W: OK, don’t worry. Let me examine you.

Text 5
W: Oh, my God! There’s a long queue at the counter.
M: Yeah, some have big parcels to send, and others have forms to fill in.
W: Well, I’m afraid we’ll have to wait a long time.

Text 6
W: Wait a minute. I have an idea. Now that we’re going to the same place, why don’t we share a taxi?
M: But it’s cheaper to take a bus. The taxi will cost about 130 dollars but the bus will only cost 70 dollars.
W: That’s true, but if we share a taxi then it will cost about 65 dollars each.Actually, it will cost less than 70 dollars each.
M: That’s a good idea. Let’s do that!

Text 7
M: Morning, Sue.Did you enjoy your holiday in Florida?
W: Yes. We really had a great time. And some friends went with me.
M: Where did you stay at night? In a hotel?
W: No. We camped in the mountains. We cooked all our meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds wonderful. Was the weather good?
W: The sun shone nearly every day and it didn’t rain at all.

Text 8
M: How many children are there in this school?
W: More than nine hundred, nearly a thousand.
M: What foreign languages do they learn?
W: Most of them study English, and others learn Russian, Japanese, French or German.
M: I see. How long have you been teaching English?
W: Ever since I came back to China. Let me see. That was almost twenty years ago.
M: So you once lived abroad. That’s interesting. Where were you?
W: Well, I was born in China, but I grew up in New Zealand.
M: No wonder your spoken English is very good.
W: Thank you.But I don’t speak it so fluently now.

Text 9
M: Sonia, can you give me some advice on healthy eating?
W: Sure, Mike. The best thing you can probably do is add some vegetables to your main meal.
M: You mean people like me who tend to eat chocolate and cakes should change to fruit and vegetables instead, right?
W: That’s right. It’s just common sense.
M: So how can you keep such a slim figure — just keep away from fries and hamburgers?
W: Yes, and red meat. White meat such as chicken and duck is healthier.
M: And what about fish? My mom always makes us eat fish, but I never think it has a good taste.
W: Yeah.At least once or twice a week you should eat fish. It’s full of goodness and very easy to digest.
M: OK, then, will the healthy things make us live longer?
W: Yeah. In fact, some research shows that eating more fruit and vegetables can reduce your risk of cancer by as much as 20%.
M: That’s amazing! Please explain why.

Text 10

Complaining about faulty goods or bad service is never easy. Most people dislike making a complaint. But in fact, it is the shopkeeper’s responsibility to take the complaint seriously and to replace or repair faulty articles or put poor service right. The producer may have a part to play but that comes later.
Complaint should be made to a responsible person. Go back to the shop where you bought the goods, taking with you the receipt.Ask to see the owner in a large store. In a small store you may complain directly to the assistant. In a chain store ask to see the manager. If you telephone, ask the name of the person who handles your complaint at first, otherwise you may never find out who will deal with the complaint later.
Even the bravest person sometimes finds it difficult to complain in person. So you can write a letter of complaint and keep a copy of it. If you are not satisfied with the answer you get, or you do not get a reply, write to whoever is in charge again.
