Text 1

M: What shall we have for this dinner? I feel tired and hungry now.
W: Don’t worry about that. We can order takeout.

Text 2
W: How do you know so much about dieting?
M: You might not believe this, but I used to weigh more than twice what I do now!

Text 3
W: I’m afraid we’ll have to cancel the trip, Greg.
M: Yeah, this is much more important. You’ll have to go to the funeral. He was your uncle.

Text 4
W: Where do you wish me to take you, sir?
M: Please take me to Harvard University. By the way, is it far from here?

Text 5
W: We will go to climb up the hill tomorrow. Let’s go to the supermarket to buy some food now.
M: Good idea. We can have a picnic on the top of the hill.

Text 6
W: May I take your order now?
M: Yes, bring me a bottle of wine and steak, please.
W: Do you want some salad dressing?
M: Yes. What kind do you have?
W: We have Italian, French, Thousand Island and blue cheese dressing.
M: I think French will be fine.

Text 7
M: So, how long have you had your driver’s license?
W: I think I got it when I was 17 years old actually.
M: How do you get a driver’s license in your country?
W: Well, first, you get a driver’s permit. And then you start driving with your parents. And you’d also go to driving lessons. And then you have to pass a driving test and a written test as well.
M: Did you get a perfect score on your driving test?
W: I was close to perfect.

Text 8
M: I should say I like mountain climbing, but I’m not so professional. How about you?
W: I’m the same as you, an amateur mountain climber. I went climbing in the Rocky Mountains with my friends last summer vacation. We spent two days in the mountains.
M: How did you spend the night there?
W: We put up a tent in the night, waiting for the sunrise. It was really beautiful.
M: I had a similar experience, but that was on the top of Mount Tai in my country.
W: Mount Tai? It’s very famous in China, isn’t it?
M: Yes. It is one of the Five Great Mountains.
W: I want to climb Mount Tai this summer vacation. Would you be my guide?
M: I’d love to.

Text 9
M: Can I ask you for a favor?
W: Sure.
M: As a foreigner, I don’t know how to rent an apartment here in Paris.
W: Why don’t you tell me what you need? Then I can figure out which apartment is the most suitable for you.
M: I am a student and I want to live close to my school. I like to play soccer and I can use the school’s sports field.
W: Well, I think that an apartment near your school with two rooms and a kitchen would suit your needs. The apartment is on the 7th floor.
M: That sounds great!
W: It is right near the market and has comfortable facilities.
M: Thank you so much. That’s very kind of you.
W: My pleasure.

What is school for? It’s an easy question but people in the USA have different answers. A study from a teaching group called PDK International asked Americans to name the biggest purpose of school. PDK International said nearly 45 percent of people said the main goal was to prepare students for exams. Around a quarter of people said it was for kids to get a job. Just over 26 percent of Americans said the biggest reason for school was to teach children about citizenship. The CEO of PDK International said the study questioned whether schools were doing the right thing. He agreed with an author who said the purpose of school is "to ask questions of the universe". Students had different ideas about school. Elena Brankov, 15, said it was to teach creativity, the sharing of ideas and how to use technology. Seth Godin said school "is to get students trained in the basic skills necessary for employment and create leaders who help us to compete on the world stage".
