Text 1
W: John, what do you think of Beijing Opera?
M: Well, honestly speaking, I went to watch it out of curiosity. I’d say it’s really an excellent art form. I don’t understand why Tina said it’s terrible.
Text 2
W: I can’t seem to keep up with everything I have to do. You’re always so organized and efficient. How do you do it?
M: I’m not always organized and efficient, but I’ve gotten better since I read a book about time management.
Text 3
W: I feel horrible. Daisy was angry with me because I lost her notes. Do you think I should apologize again?
M: If I were you, I’d let her calm down a few days before approaching her.
W: Maybe you’re right.
Text 4
W: The announcement says our flight has been delayed because of some mechanical problems.
M: Too bad. Do you know when the problems will be solved?
W: No. Let’s go to find out when it will be ready to take off.
Text 5
M: Helen, do you have a meeting in Edinburgh?
W: Yeah, I’m going to see some important customers there. Why?
M: I’m going to visit Glasgow on Wednesday and it’s quite near Edinburgh.
W: Ah ... I’m going to drive there tomorrow, so you can go with me.
Text 6
W: Darling, how much is that new camera?
M: The original price was $200, but I got a 20% discount.
W: What a bargain! But look at this, the gas bill. It arrived this morning. And we haven’t paid the phone bill yet. What’s wrong with our old camera?
M: It’s old.
W: Old? How long have we had it? Just one year?
M: No, we’ve had it for three years.
W: You’d better take the new camera back to the shop and get your money back. I don’t think we can afford it.
Text 7
M: I’d like to make an appointment with the doctor, please.
W: OK. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4 pm?
M: Can you arrange it for me in the morning?
W: Um...How about tomorrow at 8 am or Thursday at 8:15 am?
M: Well, tomorrow would be fine.
W: What’s the purpose of your visit?
M: Well, to tell you the truth, I fell from a ladder two days ago while painting my house, and my foot landed in a can and it was badly hurt.
Text 8
W: Would you like to come over to dinner and have a game of mahjong afterwards?
M: With pleasure.
W: You were not so eager about mahjong before.
M: That’s because I didn’t know the fun of playing it then. Why is mahjong such a popular game, do you know?
W: I’ve got no idea. I only know that foreigners are beginning to take an interest in it besides their old card games.
M: That’s right. Some of them are already experts.
W: Indeed they are. But the trouble about mahjong is once you’re interested in it, you can’t get rid of it.
M: Yes. Once I went crazy about other hobbies such as stamp collecting and reading, but I find them very boring now.
W: I’m sure your former hobbies are more beneficial.
M: I can’t deny that, and I can’t help it, either.
Text 9
M: Good morning. This is Wal-Mart supermarket.
W: Good morning. This is Mrs. Black. I bought an air conditioner a week ago, but it hasn’t arrived yet. When can you get it delivered?
M: I’m sorry, Mrs. Black. I’ll check it immediately. Can I have your name and your phone number?
W: Yes. It’s Ellen Black. My phone number is 66385249. Do you need my address?
M: No, thank you, Mrs. Black. Let me check it for you. Oh, Mrs. Black, there was something wrong at our end, and I’m terribly sorry about it. It will be delivered to your house within 24 hours. Will that be OK?
W: All right. I hope you’ll be more careful next time.
M: Yes, we will. We won’t let it happen again.
Text 10
It was a bit of bad luck when the man’s car broke down — he was stuck in a no-parking area. So he went to a store to borrow a pen and paper to leave a note for the traffic police. The pen, however, was just like his car. It didn’t work. When he decided to go to another store to buy a pen, he found another little problem. He only had a $50 bill and the salesman couldn’t change it. So he went off to find a bank to change the bill to buy the pen to write on the paper to put it on his car to tell the traffic police that his car had broken down. As he left the bank he saw a phone box. He decided to call a garage to send a truck to pull the car away, but the number was busy. When he got back to the car he found a parking ticket on the car. The story had, however, a happy ending. The driver wrote to the police station to explain what had happened. The police officer who read the letter decided not to punish him with the $20 parking fine.
